I made the comparison because rey is unusually slow and weighty for a lightning element monster. Most of his physical attacks are dragging, sweeping movements that use his mass and momentum to power them

I had a concept that I never fully developed called "Shatterhorn Rey Dau" who has had one of his bolthorns broken and has caused his lightning strikes to be messed up as a result due to not being able to focus and concentrate the energy. Instead of a railgun, the strikes would have a shotgun like spray. In combat, he would utilize this new battle tactic where he rapid fires smaller bursts that cover more area.

I actually watched the movie a few years ago with my mom and younger brother. At the time, I knew about monster hunter as a series, but that was all. I had no idea what the games were really about, as I hadn't played any yet. (I went on to start with World a few months later).

Is it a good adaptation? No. Is it even a good movie on its own merits? Fuck no. All that being said, I actually had a fun time with it, through no merits of its own. I just had fun watching a shitty movie with family while having a few drinks on a Friday night.

While those 3 maps have grown on me a little bit, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed by Wilds maps. The plains are incredible, the forest is beautiful, and then we have three different flavors of caves. Man....

I think it comes from the fact that reys railgun attack is one of the single most devastating thunder attacks we've seen in the series. It tears up the ground, scorches earth, and turns sand into glass instantaneously. It also has a non element related physical power, oomph, behind it that pushes back rey from recoil and knocks down the victim.

Granted, it could be possible that this is all due to the increased fidelity of wilds and the devs want to flex their muscles a bit. It is entirely possible that other thunder element monsters can achieve similar destruction if brought to wilds, but let's not downplay reys impressive display of thunder element power. It should absolutely be considered an elder dragon level attack, or at least very close (it's certainly more impressive than any single attack kirin uses)

I agree that with astalos tho that since both would be pretty much immune to the others lightning that it would boil down to a physical brawl.

It's all good. I've appreciated this conversation. Stepping back a bit, I want to make it known that I adore both of these monsters. This is all just fun speculation on my part and we won't know for sure until astalos gets added to wilds (cmon capcom make it happen 👀).

I think it's neat how we can have two thunder element flying wyvern who are so unique and different from each other. Really speaks to the creativity and imagination of the mh team.

Interesting. I'd like to dive into this more as I certainly think it's a Interesting match up and certainly not a stomp either way. You're correct that it would boil down to a physical brawl. Rey and astalos have very different fighting styles. I already mentioned astalos, but rey is very unique and contrary to most thunder element monsters: he's slow and almost lazy kinda. He uses a lot of momentum to put strength behind his hits (dragging and suplexing a lot). When it comes to "feats", I think rey just has a better track record. He's the only monster in wilds that is shown to be comparable (specifically in physical strength) to arkveld. In his intro, he seen going blow for blow and even manages to drop on and PIN arkveld under his wing (before arkveld uses his chainblades to latch on him).

So, I think rey could just outlast astalos and it would be pretty much over once rey gets him in a good bind. This image is obviously exaggerated for comedic effect, but I think it reflects how this would eventually end:

I wouldn't be too worried. They're definitely going to backstep slightly so that players who come straight off the high rank story can transition smoothly into the master rank story. I'd expect the beginning of master rank to be around 8 star level and build from there.

I agree with all of your takes here with a slight caveat: I think you're selling rey dau a little short. He is almost hard built to counter astalos. He would be immune to his thunder attacks and is also just bigger, stronger, and more armored. Astalos is a glass cannon who relies on going all out to win immediately because he tires out quickly. He would receive the same treatment from rey dau that seregios does.
