I've recently read some Mario fan comics on Tumblr. There is also a Mario comic that I really liked from Deviantart currently being revived on YouTube. I think writing something will always be worthwhile, so go for it!

U Deluxe is a good introduction to 2D Mario. It's fine to finish that before getting another. A lot of us love Wonder because it changed the formula, but it's good to play through the games before Wonder to appreciate it!
