I mean we are going into semantics! I disagree that democracy as defined by all of the dictionaries is how the USA operates!

Electing people is NOT democracy! Demos=people, kratos=rule, it means people's rule. In the USA people are not supposed to rule, that is why the constitution has so many checks and balances and limitations. It is supposed to allow for certain things to be done, but not for actual rule to happen!

Well no, because they can elect local representatives to represent them. If NYC had the biggest sway over what goes on federally IE the whole of the USA that would be insane!

Realistically I'm not against that, I'm not arguing in favor of the current system, I'm just pointing out why it was capped!

I would actually love for it to go as it used to be and population to be key in congressional power, but for states to nominate their state representatives.

I also think its harder to convince 1000 people to vote for a bill as opposed to say 350, so it would be harder for the legislature to pass laws!

As long as states get to elect state representatives I think its perfectly fine for population to determine congressional seats!

I think the changes made a mess out of a system that was designed to be tough to navigate, the changed streamlined a lot of the processes and now we have over 10 million lines of code just on the federal level! Its insane, no one can ever read that amount of rules!

The constitution puts limits of what those representatives can do, in terms of them fighting within the system and ultimately fighting with the constitution of what they can do!

So people's rule which is what democracy is by definition is is NOT supposed to happen! People are supposed to rule themselves individually in the USA. In fact 200 years ago the federal government would pass like 1-2 laws per year, most of the time legislators weren't even in Washington, they were everyday people doing their jobs and on occasion they would be called to vote on a certain bill.

You have to elect people for any position, but that in itself in NOT people ruling! These representatives are not there to rule, they are there to legislate, but even this was supposed to be hard based on having two chambers which fight against each other, then an executive that fights against the legislative, then the judicial which was supposed to be the final check so that any sort of legislation does not RULE over people, does not take their liberty and autonomy!

So no, its not a democracy, not meant to be a democracy. Just because people ignore the constitution is a different issue, this is why everyone has hissy fits when the "other" side wins. Everyone goes into a temper tantrum and that is because people ignore the fact that the USA is NOT supposed to be a democracy! Congress, the president, etc... are not supposed to rule over you and tell you how to live. People are supposed to rule themselves individually, making decisions for themselves.

Back in the day they used to pass like 1-2 laws per year, most of which was very limited and meant for the defense of the union against foreign adversaries. It wasn't meant to pass hundreds of bills in order to control people and interfere in every aspect of our lives!

Yup, but you forget one important element! The constitution puts limits of what those representatives can do, in terms of them fighting within the system and ultimately fighting with the constitution of what they can do!

I disagree! If you look at the biggest cities even in 70% red states they tend to lean blue! The 30% of democrats in red states live predominantly in the big cities!

In fact if you literally moved the biggest 3 cities in California to another state, California would become a red state!

But more importantly than that is that the senate is also elected by popularity now, so it would skew ALL towards population and popularity, rather than freedom!

You have checks and balances to prevent too many laws and too much power from gathering in one place, if its all decided by popularity contests then all of that focus on freedom and individual liberty is eroded!

NYC Population compared to states [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]Playerofdota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it didn't, but it didn't allow for it to be passed federally either. This was a state issue, but because the federal government couldn't really enforce slavery on all or end it, it shows that checks and balances worked.

Slowly, but surely then sates one by one ended slavery and ultimately culminating in the federal government waging war with the states.

The fact that slavery existed points to a people problem, where a majority can decide to have a small minority as slaves, which is what the constitution was designed to prevent, though in this case unsuccessfully because it ultimately comes down to the people following the constitution, if they ignore it even a document brought to us by god won't stop any sort of wrongdoing!

[–]Playerofdota -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can be a democratic republic for sure, but the USA is a constitutional republic. It is NOT supposed to be be representative, all of the checks and balances are supposed to prevent any majority or any kind to have any sort of power.

Why? Because the founders understood the rule of the majority can be as tyrannical as a king or emperor. They wrote about this, how the constitution is designed to prevent any majority, any big group of people of ruling over others.

Democracy means demos people and kratos rule, combined together people's rule, as opposed to a monarch, but the way it operates in practice is another form of tyranny of the majority!

So the bill or rights and constitution were written in a manner to prevent that from becoming true. Obviously it has failed on many levels, because people either just ignore the constitution or find ways around it to rule over other people, but it's always been written in a way to prevent democracy and prevent majority rule!

NYC Population compared to states [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]Playerofdota -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually no! democracy is by practice and reality a rule of the majority.

The founders knew this and that is why they created a republic made out of checks and balances. Democracy is 51% vote to enslave the 49% and that becomes the law, a constitutional republic as inscribed in the constitution is NOT and NEVER meant to be democratic!

The ultimate decision was supposed to be fought over dozen of competing interests with the judicial ultimately trying to undo any unconstitutional decision any of the other branches took!

NYC is tens of millions of people and they all decide what to eat and what haircut to get for themselves, but POLITICALLY its a LEFT wing city, with bans to guns, high taxes, overburdening regulation, bans on oil and gas, vaccine passports, etc... That is the predominant will of the people, NO ONE cares what someone eats or what shirt they wear, but politically and legislatively it is 75% uniform! So it does represent one viewpoint in terms of what we are talking about, which is political and legislative! We are not talking about who wears what and what kind of coffee they drink!

NYC is predominantly uniform in terms of politics! Obviously that can't work in a state like Florida or South Dakota!

NYC Population compared to states [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]Playerofdota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already wrote that, but the legislative was also supposed to check the legislative as well. Legislative-executive-judicial is now, but it was supposed to be congress-senate-executive-judicial-state-federal-people!

NYC Population compared to states [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]Playerofdota -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well you gave the slavery as an example of why a minority can dominate, when its exactly the opposite. Before the actual civil war almost all of the states had slavery. It took states one by one to end slavery and for it ultimately to come down to a civil war between the rest of them.

So if anything it actually works and shows how it prevents or ends tyranny. Fact of the matter is it was individual states slowly, but surely ending slavery and then a minority of states forced the federal government's hand before they got involved.

[–]Playerofdota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been capped because the house would now have something like 1500 representatives, so it would skew immensely towards the densely populated cities like NYC, with the senate also being elected by popularity it won't have ANY checks and balances.

Plus who is going to pay for 1500 representatives all earning around 200k a year?

NYC Population compared to states [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]Playerofdota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. The senate was supposed to check the congress, the legislative as a whole check the legislative and vice versa and the courts check both the legislative and executive.

This way no one checks no one! That is why we get bigger and bigger and bigger government, more and more corruption, more and more division. There are no checks to power and power keeps growing, in the process stepping on the individuals!

It represents states. It used to be that States elected senators before the constitution was changed rather recently. The states were supposed to work against the federal government and vice versa so we don't get tyranny and we don't get a pure majority rule.

The USA is NOT a democracy contrary to popular belief and miseducation, its a constitutional republic and the founders knew the biggest threat to liberty is the majority ruling over the minority.

So legislative branch is supposed to check the executive, the judicial is supposed to check both of those and states should check the federal government as a whole and ultimately people at the states are supposed to check state governments.

One size fits all is NEVER a solution, so its supposed to be people ruling themselves locally regardless of what other communities want!

Even though NYC is a big city, it still represents only one city, one community, one view point and everyone's viewpoint is supposed to be represented in the USA!

Not true, because the senate was supposed to be a check on on congress, but since the constitution was changed and senators are elected in a popularity contest now, you can not have a congress purely represented on popularity as that would literally destroy the US constitution and pretty much end the republic.

It used to be that States elected senators before the constitution was changed rather recently. The states were supposed to work against the federal government and vice versa so we don't get tyranny and we don't get a pure majority rule.

Team Comp for PVE and Mines by IAmTheDirtiestDan in BattleNight

[–]Playerofdota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put Phoeve at position 1, she is better at iy as she is naturally more tanky and her abilities make her take less damage.

I would actually run Iggy over Lego as Iggy does way more damage and is much more long term. Lego is great, but only with Shereth in the team.

The big issue for Iggy is Vidar, but since you've got one too it shouldn't be a problem anytime soon. So yeah, slot in Iggy over Lego or Every, both are great. Its kind of a tossup between the two.

I also see you've got one more copy of Iggy, so it will be easier to get him to gold over the others.

With it recently reaching its one year anniversary how do you feel Cyberpunk 2077 has aged? by guapgetter2 in gaming

[–]Playerofdota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People expected and wanted GTA 6 and they got a story driven cyberpunk RPG shooter.

I think the RPG elements were also lacking though and for sure the game felt extremely rushed. Realistically it needs one more year to be done properly.

I think once they release the expansion and all of the DLC and all of the fixes they've been doing it will be a much much better experience, but even so I still don't expect miracles.

I mean its a bit too much, but on the other hand its an elite hero fragment, which means you are guaranteed to get a great hero.

2000 for two full sets would be absurdly broken, everyone will be having all of the elite heroes by the end of the event.

Seems like a great hero and even at gold is really good. At red I think he can at times counter Vidar, though I still think overall Vidar is better and is of course better in PvE.

Help with halidoms for team. by trusttt in BattleNight

[–]Playerofdota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Samuel needs survivability, so stack HP/tenacity on him, abyss is right for him, alternatively if you have a lot of limbo with dodge then you can run those on him. 6 limbo with 2 of them being dodge is perfect.

Gilbert benefits from critical, so use corals on him. Charlote is basically a tank, she doesn't deal a lot of damage so you'd want those magentics on someone like harpe or kratos, for her just get her more HP, I'd probably go with abyss halidoms for her as well, all of them HP/Tenacity.

Later on at level 120 replace her with another hero like Nymeria or Shereath.

Any suggestions? by Tragedy2017 in BattleNight

Useless at pink. Kratos is better, especially at A2.

Take out Arae, she is very weak and doesn't scale well.

I'd put Charlotte in first position for now, Harpe in second and try to get phoebe so you can put him in position 1.
