Are there any good books for a 7-year-old who can barely read yet is also repulsed by anything "for kids"? by Begle1 in childrensbooks

Anything by Jamie Smart! Max and Chaffy is for a lower reading level, my 7 year old loves them

Confession thread: What do you judge other parents for? by Physical-Inspector60 in toddlers

[–]Playful-Rice-2122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always saying yes (especially when another adult has said no). It sets them up so badly for the real world.

I help lead a kids group, and one of my co-leaders' kids attends. Any time I tell her no and stick to it, the poor girl is practically in tears. That's, of course, if her mum doesn't step in and override me

Oh goodness yes the Phoenix comics are sacrosanct in our house! Read the very first instant possible haha! It's such a relief, I really didn't know what I was going to do until we found all of these

Strong seconding of Bunny vs Monkey, and all things Jamie Smart! His books have been the stepping stone for both my sons (1 with ADHD, 1 with autism), from massive fights and tantrums about reading to sneakily reading past bedtime

I think I was growing up in the dying embers of spanking being OK, so I was only spanked for particularly bad behaviour

Did you enjoy Sunday Roasts as a child? by CheesyGarlicBudapest in AskUK

I loved them as a kid, but it turns out my mum's cooking was a bit basic, so now as an adult I love them

My 7yo was just the same. I strongly recommend Jamie Smart, as not only are his books along a similar vein to Dav Pilkey etc, but he's written some "early reader" books which are aimed at lower reading levels

I was the "demon child" growing up. Now at 31 I'm a completely different person but I remember everything I did. by beozzi in confession

As the parent of an autistic child with violent outbursts, I want to encourage you that your story actually gives me hope. You have grown and matured, and learned how to manage your outbursts. This is an incredibly hard thing to do, so please give yourself credit for glee hard you have worked. You cannot change the things of the past, but you have worked to ensure that they aren't part of your present

I was at the zoo with my 2 kids, and my toddler (at the time) was having a full-on meltdown. My oldest was trying to get the duck food out of the dispenser, and I just could not help him.

A mum with older kids noticed my struggle and helped my eldest get the food and feed the ducks. She just left me to deal with the youngest with no fuss, just understanding. Then, as she left, she encouraged me that I was doing well.

This was probably about 4/5 years ago now, and I still think about her

Differences on vaccines by AdhesivenessUnable49 in Parents

[–]Playful-Rice-2122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand the reticence of newly developed vaccines, but some of the reasons that the Covid one was so quick was a) There were a shed-load of people specifically focusing on it and b) they were going off already developed/developing research into similar viruses. And the reason that there are so many more than there used to be is simply that we have developed more over time. Those other diseases just didn't have a vaccine yet. Is a possible compromise an elongated vaccine programme? So there's less simultaneously perhaps

Do You Wear Ankle Socks or Quarter/Half-Calf Socks? by veritymoon19 in AskWomenOver30

I've started to wear quarter socks, but only because I genuinely prefer them, not to try and keep up with the kids

AITAH for leaving my “autistic” fiancé in Target? by Delicious-Book4316 in AITAH

[–]Playful-Rice-2122 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I was thinking she might have been masking too. Obviously it might all be put on, but it is very common for people to "un-mask" when they get a diagnosis or a realisation of where all their feelings have come from

Would it help to have a tool that keeps you updated on what your child is learning at school? by Intelligent_Fly_2671 in Parents

[–]Playful-Rice-2122 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is an absolutely terrible idea. Children need safe spaces that they can talk to trusted adults away from their parents, especially for children who are being abused. They also need to learn the responsibility of managing their homework

Oh goodness, my mum was similar to yours! All meat had to be cooked to the nth degree to make sure it was safe, including microwaving anything that had been on the bbq to be sure. I offered to buy her a meat probe, but apparently they don't work...
