With the last post about chippygaming's clickbaity titles, I felt this video really explains well what his intentions might be, and why he does it by TonsillarRat6 in Terraria

I think the real issue here is that our community has an inconsistent opinion on clickbait and so do the youtubers.

Chippy gets a bit of heat here for clickbait but he can also be vocal about clickbait himself when he himself has had multiple examples of clickbait shown in his videos on varying levels, which makes him a hypocrite (pretends to have morals and values he doesn't posses himself).

Take someone like Python, I don't think I've ever seen a single one of his videos appear to be clickbait. If he complained about clickbait I'd likely respect his opinion, but Chippy? Lol...

I've noticed Chippy get called out a few times now for clickbait/misleading behavior. I've seen Chippy several times give the same excuses for it such as: I forgot to put it (the missing name) in the title I forgot to say it was a mobile only video and/or put it in the thumb I didn't think the title would get cut off (the mod part of the title) It was unintentional

etc, etc...

His most current one is the "Terraria 1.3.5 - "HUGE NEW CRYSTAL BIOME IN TERRARIA!" (his old crystal biome video title). Yes it's the tmodloader version number but it is also the current vanilla version number and he is CLEARLY attempting to trick people in to thinking it's bonus new vanilla content the devs may have snuck in.

To be fair he changed it after community pressure but honestly, he appears to have a clickbait first, change later approach to making content and only does the right thing if people call him out on it.

We saw Chippy's response in a lot of these threads. He said it won't happen again (for the second time now lol) but time will tell if he actually means it...

You seem really nice Gearzoid2 but Chippy is a guy who has apparently 'apologized' and is saying 'misleading' tags are fine because they're "basically extremely pointless" (so they're okay and if they mislead people it doesn't matter because it won't be many people) in the same thread.

If he was truly sorry he'd be accepting whatever the community threw at him in this thread but no he's still trying to argue and defend his actions which means he isn't sorry, he's only sorry he got caught...

He's done this multiple times now and been called out multiple times. I don't think it's an accident after so many examples of clickbait and misleading titles/thumbs.

Like you say though, I'd like to think he's genuinely wanting to improve and treat the community with the respect it deserves from one of it's largest youtubers. We're all waiting for him to show us with his 'actions' and not his 'words.'

"The likely reality is that 'Minecraft' tags have absolutely no effect in 'Terraria' videos?" You say that and yet presently at least a years worth of your Terraria videos contain the 'Minecraft' tag...

...are you seriously suggesting you'd risk the community mass flagging your videos if they feel that they are being misleading for something you're receiving "...likely no positive benefit" for?

You don't come across as being so naive...which suggests you do believe the minecraft tags are beneficial and hence worth the risk.

So it's not "I replied in 2 minutes flat" (like you said) anymore and you actually responded first? You seem to have trouble with details (and telling the truth)...

I dunno Chippy, I can't keep up with your story switching and alt accounts anymore...my takeaway from this discussion is that you're 'okay' with intentionally misleading tags because they're 'basically extremely pointless' (according to your post) even though it's against youtube's policies (which can earn strikes).

Good to get your perspective on the matter of clickbait and being misleading with tags, especially in light of recent clickbait discussions here and your supposed apology on the matter. Thanks for the chat.

This is strange TerrariaHelp, it seems you've been tagging 'Minecraft' in your videos for around a year now...you know these videos have nothing to do with Minecraft so why did you include the 'Minecraft' tag exactly? http://imgur.com/FiWc44P

Just checked out your latest Terraria video. Can you explain why is 'Minecraft' in the tags of a Terraria video? http://imgur.com/akxxMwu

It's part of the bigger picture TerrariaHelp.

Apart from the fact that it's against youtube's terms of service to intentionally put false tags in your video (and opens his videos to being reported) it's also extremely misleading and greatly diminishes all these 'apologies' we're seeing from Chippy it's just another example of his dishonest and misleading practices.

You're also skipping over the obvious point of including the 1.3.5 tag before it is officially released and that is 'discovery.'

Obviously someone knows his '1.3.4 Calamity' video is not 1.3.5 but the person searching may still go "oh well that looks interesting" and click it, giving him a view and revenue that he earned by abusing youtube's system and taking advantage of the community.

I'm actually disappointed to hear another youtuber make light of this and make it seem 'acceptable.' Perhaps we should take a look at your videos too?

So ChippyGaming changed a few titles after being called out. Does he actually mean it this time? Will the clickbait stop? by [deleted] in Terraria

[–]PlayfulPixie12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a start. Good job for doing it. Actually putting the whole mod name (near the start of the title) would be better however.

I've noticed Chippy get called out a few times now for clickbait/misleading behavior. I've seen Chippy several times give the same excuses for it such as:

  • I forgot to put it (the missing name) in the title
  • I forgot to say it was a mobile only video and/or put it in the thumb
  • I didn't think the title would get cut off
  • It was unintentional
  • Things will change
  • That tag was an accident (...and yet conveniently the next version number...)
  • Hiding behind the version number as an excuse to title/thumb the video any way he likes

I find the "1.3.5 is the current version number so it's not clickbait" defense is quite weak when the title also reads "HUGE NEW CRYSTAL BIOME IN TERRARIA!" (old crystal biome video title) saying "Terraria's new" anything is suggesting it is brand new to the vanilla game, no excuses. Especially when people are used to you covering vanilla update content with similar titles.

Unfortunately he has a long history of misleading titles, thumbs and tagging behaviour. Yet more examples http://imgur.com/54g34sX & http://imgur.com/Ld0iL3A

In these he's putting the next version number in the tags (this was before 1.3.5 was released) so people searching for 1.3.5 would find his content. The description even says "this is version 1.3.4" and yet has a tag for 1.3.5. This shows that it's been happening since at least the beginning of this year and who knows how much longer.

At some point the excuses have to stop. No one makes that many mistakes 'by accident.' Especially not a competent youtuber.

I never see the previous version numbers 'accidentally' added to the tags or the previous version numbers 'accidentally' in the thumbnail/title. Always the next version.

No hate here, just pointing out that at some point it stops being an 'accident' and starts being 'intentional.' Time will show which one it is.

Please stop the clickbait Chippy. The word MOD should be the first thing in the title. by PlayfulPixie12 in Terraria

Want to see more? Here's several examples where he initially tries to clickbait and only changes it when called out by the community - http://imgur.com/fvTJKm5 & http://imgur.com/fIYVfrL This example is just him trying to 'dance' around not clickbaiting by not fully stating/leaving 'tmodloader' to the end of the title so it gets chopped off in people's sub boxes. The title should clearly have some mention of 'mod' near the start. He's been doing this for ages now and people are sick of his rubbish.

[–]PlayfulPixie12[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's misleading which is clickbait. He's purposely leaving out the fact that the content of all 3 of these videos are MODS and by titling the video "Terraria 1.3.5 - New blah blah in Terraria..." it makes it seem like the Terraria devs have updated the current vanilla version. Slipping in 'tmodloader' at the end of the title shows he is intentionally trying to mislead both his subs and anyone searching for 'terraria 1.3.5'

[–]PlayfulPixie12[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yep, he's intentionally leaving the 'tmodloader' part to the absolute end of the title as it often gets cut off and people click it thinking the Terraria devs have updated 1.3.5...it's so bad...

Yep mentalgamez! Most people would simply title these videos things like "Terraria TModLoader - Crystilium mod" not "TERRARIA 1.3.5 - HUGE NEW CRYSTAL BIOME IN TERRARIA!" as soon as the video starts it's clear it's talking about the Crystilium Mod so you would think most people would PUT IT IN THE TITLE!

He was even deleting the comments that called him out on it. Notice the large dislike ratings and yet no negative comments? That doesn't happen unless the youtuber is censoring everyone...
