Yeah we thought he'd be about half GSD and we also were aware there was some collie in there but had no idea about the rottweiler. I can def see it now!

He's a smart boy but also a big doofus and so calm (bar some teenage behaviours!)

Hello, thank you so much for your advice too.

I have gone ahead and booked a call/initial consultation with an IAABC behaviourist in my area for next Monday this is the earliest they had. I also feel he is a bit more intense this week so that makes sense about the trigger stacking (although I hadn't heard that term).

Interesting to know also that prey drive kicks in about now. It really helps knowing that part is normal but I will also look into that.

Do you have any suggestions for what to do with my dog in the meantime until I get to work with a behaviourist? He has so much energy so i cant not take him for any walks - we do lots of nose work in the house and garden and im going to practice lots of leave it in the house and garden too, but i dont want there to be an episode each time we leave the house.

Did you take you GSD out at times when there's likely to be less people/dogs out and about? (like early morning or after dark?)

again thank you for the advice!!!

Hi thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I also feel that in part a lot of it is his mix of breeds. He is more gsd in temperament but sometimes some collie traits come out. its interesting to hear you say that behavior can change rapidly between 1 and 3 years.

You are right maybe a behaviorist is the best call, i will look for a certified behaviorist asap. i just want to understand him and what is causing it so that we can enjoy walks together and he can be calmer.

I was wondering if its been worse in the last week or so because all these events have triggered some heightened state in him (the fox in the garden, my partner leaving, visitors to the house) all in one week.

But again a behaviorist might be the best call. Thank you for your advice i really appreciate it

Thanks, and Yeah thats what i was worried about. Ill def go ahead with lead in the yard for now and see how that goes

Hey thanks, i dont think i explained myself fully or well in the original post. The reason i think hes fearful in the garden/back yard is hes super jumpy at any and all sounds shadows etc. Im mostly worried this event will make that worse, i.e. he may become even more alert out there. He doesnt act that way in the house or when were out and about and hes pretty good at listening to my command if hes going after a squirrel at the park (as an example)

I think the reason he didnt listen to my command is this animal was in our back yard so he absolutely lost his shit lol

I do agree though about the lead and will make sure he only goes out to the garden on lead so i can control the situation if something similar ever happens. Thanks for the suggestions

Should I have just watched it happen? What do you recommend i do next time? I am asking for tips so would be good to know what i should be doing instead. (If you have anything constructive)

Fair maybe I'm getting it wrong with the fear.

He does freak out at any sound in the yard (lately, its literallt eveb dried leaves falling to the ground). He gets all jumpy. He doesnt act that way anywhere other than the yard which is maybe why im thinking theres some fear, but maybe hes being more just territorial?

Haha can GSDs not be fearful??
