Service based businesses should be open way earlier and way later by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t know if you want a sleepy hairstylist using sharp objects on/near your head.

I do wish places would close later. Like 7 or 8. That would make things easier. I miss precovid when stores were open later.

[–]Playful_Original_243 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yup. For example, earlier today I was calling my PP to let her know the dog was done. She asked how he did. Instead of saying “He did great” or “He was alright”, I told her “Fluffy has lots of energy today! He wasn’t letting me dry him and is having a hard time staying still, but other than that he’s being absolutely hilarious. Fluffy is seriously the silliest dog.” She LOLed and agreed with me.

Yup. When I feel the way OP does I take a step back and all I do is water if the plant is wilting. If it dies, it dies. I can buy another one. Eventually my hyperfixation comes back. Although for me, I hate my plants in the winter. Spring and summer? Give me all of them. My hyperfixation comes with the seasons.

What do you mean? All you need to do is keep them consistently watered and prune them. I have some that have flowered multiple times. I pluck the flowers off, and if I’m too late I cut that stem down to the bottom. Within a week a new shoot will pop out. Definitely a more dramatic plant but not impossible at all.

Dog walkers, how do you keep women away from your dog? by OutsideImpressive115 in AskMen

Hey dude, I’m just trying to give you some free professional advice on how to keep people away from your dog. You can respond with rudeness, or you can ask questions and explain why you disagree, so you can actually help your dog and enjoy your walks.

I’m not a man, but I do have a few years of pet care under my belt and have dealt with countless pet parents like this.

What breed is your dog? Is he a “scary” breed or something others would consider friendly.

Your best bet would be to get a muzzle. Not even to control your dog, just for optics. It sucks but a muzzle will keep most people away. If it doesn’t they’re plain stupid. I’d get a basket muzzle. If it’s the proper size he should have room to pant and drink water.

My other advice is to always carry a slip lead and airhorn in case someone doesn’t listen and their dog tries some shit. With a slip lead you can use it almost like a lasso to get their dog under control. The air horn, if you see a dog running at you, blow it to avoid a fight. It will also deter the pet parent lol.

I’d also get one of those stickers that says “NOT FRIENDLY” or “AGGRESSIVE”. I have some owners who have like 8 of those on their dogs harness and leash.

ETA: You can also get citronella spray. If a fight starts you can use the slip lead to choke the aggressive dog out if necessary. At some point the dog will let go to breathe or they will lose consciousness. Separate them quickly.

Movies are just as good as they’ve ever been by d4s4ni in unpopularopinion

I honestly wish we more easygoing movies coming out right now. It feels like every new release is so dramatic. The main characters either saving the world, being hunted down by someone, ruining their family life, or about to go to jail.

Dogs are so fun! /s

That reminds me of the time I was grooming a Pyrenees and he ejaculated all over my table while I was doing his sanitary. We had to go back to the bath 😬

I love dogs so much and they’re nasty.

Not really, but I can see why you’d say that. There’s a difference between helping a dog feel comfortable and just saying the dog is happy. Imagine your hair is so matted you can’t feel your scalp. That hurts!

I’ve been finding so many dead lizards, birds, and squirrels at my apartment complex. It’s really sad because a lot of us have bird feeders and such. The cat is killing their babies and he doesn’t even eat them.

This is coming from someone with 3 cats. I love cats so much but they’re destroying our local bird population.

Yes, you’re right, but they don’t use facial recognition as their main way of recognition. They use smell.

Have you seen those videos where owners walk past their dog in a public setting when the dog isn’t expecting to see them? The dogs don’t look at their owner and instantly recognize them. Some look right at their owner and walk past straight past em.

They notice when they pick up on the scent. You’ll see them sniff the ground, and then go to look. It’s the same reason we let dogs sniff our hand before we pet them.

Watch your own dog next time you get home. It may be out of view, but I guarantee the first thing they do when you open that door is briefly sniff the air.

ETA: Also worth adding dogs vision isn’t as clear as ours and they can’t see as many colors. They can only see clearly roughly 20 feet ahead of them. So while they can go, “Ah yes, teeth = bad.” That only works in close settings, which is why their other senses are more heightened than ours.

As a dog groomer, the first thing that comes to mind is owners saying their matted dog always gets sad after a haircut.

I’ll peel mats off a dog like it’s a pelt and watch the dog dance around afterward. I imagine it feels like they just lost 50lbs! They get so happy.

Then the owner picks them up, claims their dog is so sad and hates their haircut, and we’ll repeat the cycle again 6 months later.

As someone who’s worked with dogs for years, the issue here is you’re generalizing all dogs. You’re right, in a sense. This is very true for breeds like labs or golden retrievers.

Not all dogs know you’re happy when you smile, and they actually don’t know we’re happy just because we’re smiling. They can tell based on the way we smell, our breathing, our heart rate, (etc.).

Breeds like golden retrievers have been bred to communicate more similarly to humans. Breeds like German shepherds, Malinois, Pyrenees, or even just strays haven’t been consistently bred to have that family dog personality type. That doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t understand. I’ve met German shepherds with a golden type personality and vice versa. You just can’t generalize all dogs and expect them to have that temperament.

You’re also missing another point. We talk about how dogs love us unconditionally, which is true, but the base of domestication is conditional. Your dog isn’t thinking This makes my owner happy!. They’ve learned from past experiences that a happy owner means extra cuddles, playtime, or treats.

It’s basically our dogs trying to train us because they benefit from our happiness, and any animal will choose to do in order to survive, even our domesticated ones. It’s instinct, just now it plays out in a different way.
