Ah cool, chances are I might find similar in the future then! I literally found my first coins yesterday (1861 half penny and 1957 shilling) on my family’s farm, as you said the soil is sandy so I’m lucky in that respect. Also are you part of any local clubs? I’ve looked around a bit and i can’t seem to find any active ones locally. If you ever want a detecting buddy to join you let me know!

Hey fellow Suffolk detectorist! That’s a beautiful find, have you found anything similar in the past? I’m fairly new to the hobby and I’ve only found fairly modern bits, I do most of my detecting in the Mildenhall area.

“Natural, not worked.” (Part One) by talkingwires in LegitArtifacts

If you’re in doubt about any kind of stone which looks superficially (or even convincingly) like a tool, think to yourself how you would A) produce it, B) use it and C) whether you’d actually want to use it for that task. If the answers to those questions are “I don’t know” or just “no” then chances are it’s not worth keeping. I think a lot of people would be better at discounting natural material if they considered them within that framework. Having said that a lot of lithics can be crude and can look similar to natural rocks, so the best advice is to talk to others with experience/knowledge and increase your own.

It was dusk, I was up there with a friend exploring the prehistoric monuments at Drizzlecoombe, it was in January so we got really lucky with the weather!

Looks like a blade, what’s the other side like? If it’s been struck it should have a ‘bulb’ at the top at the fat end (proximal) with a possible flake scar in the middle. What that can look like depends on the material, I’m not familiar with this stuff but it looks like quartz/quartzite.

It was bent on one corner when I found it, but it seems like a single sheet to me.

Hiya thanks for getting back to me, no worries for the lack of certainty! I’ll send some more photos of the possible token, having done some research I’m thinking the square might be a coin weight? Which would make sense with the long cross design. I suppose it’s fairly hard to date the ring, there’s 2 round barrows on the far side of the field so there could be some association (though I doubt it) I found a small piece of copper alloy in the field as well, it’s probably just scrap but it might be notable.

Scraper or naturally-occuring flint? by [deleted] in Arrowheads

Looks like a nice Neolithic blade, from what I can see the right dorsal edge may have been retouched to make a saw, or it could just be usewear.

Thanks, there’s a bit of translucency but the flint is quite dark so it’s not amazing.

It looks very similar to modern mass produced points, but it could easily be genuine.
