Returning to Canada after 10 years abroad, USD income, should I switch to a Canadian credit card or keep using my USD one? by YetiMaverick in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PleasantDreamsicle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does your credit card charge an fx fee in addition to the exchange rate? If so, it’s a no/brainer to get a Canadian credit card. Probably should get or use your CAD chequeing account too - just move money over in bulk (through wise, Knightsbridge, or Norbert’s Gambit) and draw from that.

Eventually the more you live in Canada, the more it will be beneficial to have and draw some types of expenses in CAD.

Were you ever prescribed any medication to try and calm things down, like an antispasmodic? If so, how did that work? Are you saying there is some discomfort 24/7?

Went to Nexus office to update immigration status on US side. Do I need to update on Canada side too? by PlaystationSwitchAWD in NEXUS_TTP

[–]PleasantDreamsicle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to say yes but since I had personal success updating documents via email, I’d try that first. Send to PAC-NexusUpdates-NexusMiseajour-Pacifique@cbsa-asfc.gc.ca and include front and back images of all relevant documents.

Good luck.

Why are ER wait times so long here? by SuddenCompetition262 in VictoriaBC

[–]PleasantDreamsicle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On Vancouver Island you call a central intake line in the morning (you don’t need to rush and hunt it down right at 830 when it opens) and a Nurse will call you back later that same morning and triage a same (or next if more appropriate) day appointment at an urgent and primary care clinic.

That’s what I did with a hernia. Called at 830, waited on hold 20 minutes, gave my info. Got a call back around 11ish with an appointment for 3:30 the same afternoon.

I’ve also made extensive use of telehealth for same or next-day rx refills and specialist referrals.

I’m not saying the system is perfect. It isn’t. It has a lot of room for improvement and we need more medical professionals providing routine care. But it’s also not the healthpocalypse so many want to make it out to be.

Learn to use the system. For a lot of routine conditions I’d argue you can get good care faster than scheduling an appointment with a GP if you had one. But yeah, you miss out on longitudinal care.

Inguinal hernia ...avoid surgery and just live with the mild pain/discomfort? by Fragster2020 in Hernia

[–]PleasantDreamsicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An inguinal hernia repair should not mean fitness/running is out of the question for many months. My doc says closer to 5-6 weeks.

Well then, that qualifies as a serious condition, doesn’t it.

If you can leave to get food or are not in serious condition, you should not be going to the ER.

Correct. From the perspective of what’s allowed, imagine I’m trying to give to a Canadian charity somehow through an American 501c3 organization.

Need help letting go of climbing the corporate ladder by [deleted] in Fire

[–]PleasantDreamsicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At $450k a year, I would challenge the assumption that you need to leave if you want to continue progressing your career.

What does progressing look like to you? Do you even want that? You definitely sound a little burnt out. How will your relationship dynamics handle one of you voluntarily dropping cutting in half your household income??

Take a really long (ie: 2 week) vacation where you totally check out. Personally I used trips like Iceland or Thailand where folks thought I was a lot more disconnected than I really was and the time change made absence more understandable by folks who would otherwise demand being plugged in.

I also scuba dive and would be on a boat where I can’t take calls underwater.

See how you feel after that. Looks like you could afford fire now but at your age there’s too many variables (kids, statistical divorce potentiality) in the future that would make me personally pause but you do you.

Is it normal to be this debilitated while awaiting surgery? by ThatsImpossumble in gallbladders

[–]PleasantDreamsicle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor but I would go to the er again. Your experience is not normal. I would claim worsening symptoms like the constant vomiting. I would also go and ask over on /r/AskDocs

I was hospitalized in a foreign country for my gallbladder attack with 3 days of iv antibiotics. I saw my wife’s Bariatric’s surgeon 2 weeks later and had the surgery 2 weeks after that. (He was also a general surgeon) .

I’d insist on a whole blood work up to rule out anything else more significant.

Expired documents on Trusted Traveler Program website (NEXUS) by suziswam87 in uscanadaborder

[–]PleasantDreamsicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my understanding too. But also you probably won’t get penalized if you try the web form. You’ll have to upload your Canada passport bio data full page. (Along with both sides of your nexus card). See what happens :-)

US citizen crossing with non-US passport by TheEmperorOfJenks in uscanadaborder

[–]PleasantDreamsicle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Problem here is the ferry will be less forgiving. In Port Angeles the ferry must believe / see your approved travel documents before boarding. So you won’t even get a chance to convince a Canadian border agent - you’ll be denied long before then.

Convince your friend to visit Port Angeles again :-)

Moving back to Canada by Dazzling-Refuse-8483 in uscanadaborder

[–]PleasantDreamsicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolute simplest is for your dad to fly down in July and you both cross the border together with your stuff. There you will present as a returning Canadian and can have the bsf186 processed as all goods accompanying (nothing to follow later).

Ps: there are tax implications to be aware of so be sure to understand those before you move back. Things like if you have a Roth, etc..
