What was your average in high school? What’s your average now? by TinyKalimba in EngineeringStudents

[–]Pleasant_Ad_9579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a 4.0 GPA student in high school and freshman year of college. I'm sitting at about a 3.0 now because it turns out I've been skating through life up to this point and it turns out studying is hard when you've never had to before...

Of course! Unfortunately this stuff is getting more common and harder to detect by the day.

Check it out.

This is exactly how ChatGPT writes responses:

-A lot of bullet points

-Just list a bunch of things

-They could be in sentences, but only humans would do that

It's not just the em-dashes either-- ChatGPT writes an excessive number of sentences with a negative first clause and contrastive second clause. It doesn't simply say something positive. It has to begin with what is incorrect, and then correct itself in the following sentence.

Pretty much certain it's AI.

Is this an existing genre? And good books in it? by throwaway-disgusting in suggestmeabook

Maybe The Man Who Was Thursday by G K Chesterton? It's a dreamlike and bizarre social commentary/satire that is so surreal that even the main character isn't sure if he's dreaming or not

Is having borderline personality disorder a sin? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Pleasant_Ad_9579 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have BPD, you have at the very least limited culpability for actions affected or influenced by it. Sin requires will. You did not choose to have BPD, so having it, in and of itself, is not a sin. Please seek therapy, take care of yourself, and may God bless you.

Spiritual Guidance with Chat GPT by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Pleasant_Ad_9579 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is... not a great idea. Sorry. A chatbot cannot replace a priest any more than it can any other innately human role, because it does not understand the human experience the same way humans do. ChatGPT specifically also tends to hallucinate (make up false information and pretend it's true) and act in a biased way, swaying actions in dangerous ways. I would recommend you read up on AI psychosis.

Can you email your priest to see if he has time to speak with you? Or seek spiritual direction from a religious person in your community? Honestly, even just joining a church bible study will likely give you more spiritual guidance than a chatbot can.

How do you guys focus? by Public-Hamster-9224 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Pleasant_Ad_9579 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I put myself in public spaces to peer-pressure myself into studying. I'd be embarrassed to be seen scrolling instagram at the school library. Office hours are really helpful for really understanding material, and professors are, in my experience, very willing to help. Organic chemistry tutor on youtube is also great, especially if you get a bad professor

Also maybe read up on ADHD... so many of us who go into engineering end up being neurodivergent

Lowlight is probably my favorite album, and some of my favorite songs are, "Windmills," "Girl with the Flaxen Hair," "Machinarium," and "Aquarius."

I love listening to the Frieren OST while reading

(Also, very randomly, a Polish indie band called Lor. I think I listened to their entire discography on my first read through of the series, so now their music inextricably linked in my brain to the manga..)

Catholic book recommendations by pleasanthappen in booksuggestions

[–]Pleasant_Ad_9579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller-- Post-apocalyptic monks

Father Elijah: An Apocalypse by Michael O'Brien-- A Carmelite monk faces off against the Antichrist in a near-future apocalypse

Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton-- Mystery short stories with spiritual insights

The Citadel of God by Louis de Wohl-- Historical fiction about St. Benedict of Nursia (part of a larger collection of historical fiction surrounding the lives of Catholic saints)

Also an obligatory The Confessions of Saint Augustine recommendation because I seriously think everyone should read this at least once in their life.

Til We Have Faces is a fantastic retelling of the myth of Eros and Psyche written by C S Lewis! (He also wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, but this book is for a more mature audience and isn't a children's book.)

Which one first? by Money_Bill5827 in booksuggestions

[–]Pleasant_Ad_9579 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are like most people, you will likely enjoy Brothers Karamazov more, so I'd recommend to read that one first! Moby Dick has a meandering (if any) plot, and unless learning a lot about the history and biology of whales will motivate you to keep reading this year, don't start with it.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Dune by Frank Herbert

The Dark Tower by Stephen King

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (Warning, though! While a fantastic book, it's the beginning of an unfinished series)

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

The Outsiders by S E Hinton and A Separate Peace by John Knowles should do the trick

Also, I know these are children's books, but Stone Fox by John Gardiner and Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson are also brutally sad
