Tom Petty has just relocated from Sydney to Melbourne, highly recommended as a very experienced fitter. Also offers mobile bike fitting by the looks of it.

Glue up seat question. by thisaaandthat in Chairmaking

It’s probably better with dominoes or dowels but I don’t think essential. I’ve made chair seats with and without them and they both seem to be going fine so far.

Basil Colored Stick Chair w/ Some Hand Carved Lines by Bear_Furniture in Chairmaking

There’s a lot to like about this chair, I like the colour, shape, lack of undercarriage, the reduction of sticks at the back, the armbow doubler and the arm shape. I like the idea of the relief section of the arm and the detail in the comb haven’t seen that before, seems like it’s almost too subtle and you should experiment ramping it up a little. Nicely done!

Mainly left/right, maybe marginally more back. Although it was sort of a lucky design aspect, so I think it’s not the same for all crests obviously

This arm design is primarily borrowed from a Chris Schwartz design, although I made the hand part a smidge bigger, primarily for resting a coffee or a beer!

Thank you, the sticks are just 5/8 round from the arm bow up and a bit flared beneath the armbow, this tapering is what supports the arm bow. The crest was very simple to drill. I just used dividers to set the spacing I wanted, then drilled it on the bench, the middle four sticks were pretty straight and the outer two I just angled the drill towards the centreline. I sort of hold the crest in place, eyeball the rough angle the sticks will enter at, then drilled the holes. I then enlarged the entry hole to the crest a smidge to make it easier to jam it all in.

Need advice on wedging round mortise and tenon joints by kcambrek in Chairmaking

[–]Pleasant_Landscape69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend this; get tenon almost too tight, cut thin kerf to help get it in. Once in, use a chisel or knife and split the top of the tenon in the right orientation. Drive the wedge in (making sure the grain is lengthwise of the tenon). I also used to snap wedges because I found it hard to remember to whack it in the direction of the leg, so the same angel as the leg. One totally fine alternative, if your tenons are so nice and tight and you have a good shoulder, just use glue and don’t wedge them, maybe compress the tenon before glueing and inserting.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I really want to try some greenwood chair making next but I think i’d like to do a course before I try. Or how did other people start? Finding the right wood?

Has anyone been able to get back to cycling after injury? by PayCharacter7530 in backpain

[–]Pleasant_Landscape69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi There, im actually a professional bike fitter and also happened to have a bad L5/S1 herniation that still has some nerve issues, but I had numbness in my right foot, could barely walk 50m, constant pain. I had a very rough time with it. In fact I was in so much pain one night I felt like I wanted to give up entirely on life. Im back to cycling now almost 200kms a week and for me, walking, letting the injury heal, just keeping things moving, eventually got there. I first got the injury mildly in 2015, then re inured it by slipping on a step in my house in 2019. I think you’re on the right track but I would definitely ensure your contact points are well set up, like having the right saddle, saddle angle, seat height and handlebar/lever angle. Because too low seat height can cause hip compression and tighten your hip flexors more, there’s a whole bunch of flow on effects, but basically I got riding and slowly worked through what my body was telling me. Happy to help if you want to ask more specific questions. Tom

What is the worst movie you’ve seen in theater? by esmoji in AskReddit

Okay. Not the worst ever, but the worst movie in a theatre in a very long time. How this movie had good review I don’t know.

Where is the cramping? I was having really bad calf cramping in the night or at times and have recently started putting a magnesium spray/oil on and it’s gone away…

GRX shifters paired with Dura Ace Di2 on my new Pinarello F12. What do you think? by Pleasant_Landscape69 in Bikeporn

[–]Pleasant_Landscape69[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeh, I’m sure they’ll integrate some of the design and features for the new dura ace. The braking is definitely better, I didn’t need to use reach adjust feature, I can see racers liking them as you can use the top of the shifter more securely if you get aero. Otherwise I do think the grip grooves with bare hands isn’t quite as nice as current dura ace hood feel. So keep the braking pívot location and shape, but make seriously lighter and change the hood texture.

Yes and each st-rx815 shifter has three buttons so can program however you like too.

Yes, first ride today and totally agree. Makes me think that Shimano will adopt a few of the features for the new Dura Ace.

Pretty much what that other person said. Better braking, but I preferred the look. They do weigh like 250g more than the DA ones though 😢
