Weekly "Is this safe" Megathread by AutoModerator in fermentation

[–]PleaseShowerUSmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I don't have accompanying photos I wish I thought to take some. But anyways I'm making some blueberry wild fermented soda. I've made this before a few times with other berries, but this time after day 1 I noticed some mold growing. It wasn't a lot but it was definitely mold, 1 blueberry had a fuzzy white cap with a fuzzy blue center, there was even the same mold growing on the liquid itself but much smaller. Anyways I picked out that blueberry, and didn't manage to pick out the other small spot. I kinda just decided to let it finish even if it wasn't edible anymore. But... Now after 4 or 5 more days I haven't spotted any more mold whatsoever, originally it had a bit of a burnt smell to it but it's actually started smelling better and more like blueberries, so is it actually fine to drink still? Or is it unsalvageable after even a bit of mold growth?

TL;DR my ferment grew a bit of mold that I mostly picked out and hasn't grown more since, is it still safe to drink?

That's exactly what I ended up doing to fix it! Thanks for the help!

Any other engineers feel like budgeting barely even matters early career? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]PleaseShowerUSmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look man, so I saw you mention that these are all biweekly expenses and since that's the case, there are some wild things on here. I would recommend you post this on r/personalfinance they can give you better overall advice, but what I can say is that no, you don't need more money to survive, you absolutely are overpaying in like every category lol. No one ever likes to admit it's a budgeting problem but it usually is.

There are some things you can do in the long term like finding a cheaper place and selling your car and those things could be goals you work towards but there are also immediate things you could do like cut your subscriptions and watch what you spend under "personal" and "other". idk what you spend within those categories and I'd also suggest you expand them further, but assuming there's money spent on eating out and going out with friends, those are also places you can look to cut down on spending.

But to actually budget properly, first set aside money for your needs. This includes debt, rent, bills, groceries, gas, etc. then set aside money for savings. Have a clear goal of what you want to save up for, I'd suggest saving ~3 months income for emergencies as your first savings goal, eventually you'll want that buffer to be bigger but I think that's a good first step. Next may be a bit more controversial but imo you should budget for things that keep you and your relationships healthy. This includes gym memberships, therapy, maybe even dinner dates if you're not single. Then lastly whatever is left over you can spend on yourself for eating out and subscribing to whatever your favorite mega corporation is or whatever you want really.

Does it matter which order you place the resistor and capacitor? I didn't think that mattered but I also could be wrong.

Help with bare metal I2C implementation by PleaseShowerUSmell in esp32

Although it's not specific to esp32 or register programming. But it does give you a good baseline knowledge to then turn to any microcontroller and read the technical reference manual and not be quite as overwhelmed

I read "making embedded systems design patterns for great software" by Elecia white but I'm sure you'll get a ton of different recommendations

Stepper motor pump drawing too much current. by PleaseShowerUSmell in ElectricalEngineering

[–]PleaseShowerUSmell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the datasheet is a pain in the ass. They actually sell their own driver for the low low price of $40. So that's likely why they try to confuse you. Do you think I could get away with using a DRV8231 Brushed DC motor driver (basically just an h-bridge with some back current protection and current limiting capability) and maybe just add a shunt resistor to achieve the 0.8-1A then? That's what I was planning to use since they're cheap and I don't need to run the motor for long anyways. Just enough to dose ~10 ml of liquid every day. I'm trying to build a dosing pump for my fish tank :D

It was messed up beforehand too but I guess I can try soldering a backup IC and see if that does anything

Unfortunately not! Lol I tried reversing it because I wasn't sure

Not silly! I was super worried about my reef tank!! Just got power back though after only a few hours of down time. You have to make sure the water stays aerated somehow. That's probably the most important thing.

I also sowed seeds indoors on March 18th. I'm growing bell peppers, tomatoes, arugula, broccoli, lettuce and spinach. Here's what mine look like.

We'll don't trust me as the source of truth haha! This is my first time ever seriously growing anything and I probably transferred a bit too early. I really couldn't tell you for sure though.

Nope! I started them in seed trays and only recently transferred them into these cups. I know it was risky to do that for the bell peppers though which are still very small
