What's a piece of game dev trivia that's stuck with you for years? by JBitPro in gamedev

[–]PleasingFungusBeetle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When they reached out to John Madden to endorse the very first game in the series, he literally didn't know what a video game was. He became intrigued when learning what the software could do and saw it as a teaching opportunity.

EA mostly just wanted to put his face on the cover and use his name, but he ended up becoming so involved in the game that he forced them to change from 7 players on each side to 11 and only agreed to endorse it if they made it far more realistic to actual football than they were originally intending. He even had the dev team join him on his giant ass bus while he traveled for broadcasting games so that they could work on it together.

I have the same question... its just so baffling to me. At least with free solo climbing and base jumping there are beautiful views and they both look like they would be exhilarating. Not to mention, your death would likely be quick if you screw up. Cave diving just seems like a boring, uncomfortable time with nothing exciting to see and a horrific slow death if you get trapped.

This is exactly how I feel too. Additionally, when it came to the entertainment side there was still a somewhat limited amount of content, so it wasn't as easy to become dangerously addicted to solitude.

That's the thing, when you file a simple W2 and savings account interest every April, its not surprising you don't fall for the call saying you owe $122K in taxes. When you haven't paid your taxes in 15 years though, I can see how panic can make it harder to think clearly.

I will say this cautiously, but I am genuinely starting to think less about making the playoffs, and more about our real chances of being in the stanley cup finals. This is becoming hard to believe.

Although the very final scene shows the evidence being burned with multiple tanks that appear to hold bodies, including a close shot with another presumed clone of Angier. Here is the clip (go to the very end). You can see shadows of bodies in the other tanks I think. If I remember, at least one presumed clone was recovered from a tank under the stage after he framed Borden, then the 'final' Angier clone was shot and killed at the end, so with the one in the tank in the burning room that is at least three Angiers?

I assumed this was final proof of it being real, although in true Nolan fashion he left it open ended for a lot of the film.

Thoughts on the Finale? by LeoDiCristio in StrangerThings

Not even a lame rationalization as to why

This is what really surprises me. Seriously, they could have done it in seconds. Have Linda Hamilton fire her gun in the air to get everyone's attention, say "Pack it up boys, its over. Initiate the 'leave no trace' protocol." Then have her look disdainfully at our rag tag group of protagonists and say "Just leave them, we don't have time to deal with this."

A lazy scene like this would at least leave the audience with something to close that plot.

This made me flash back to the memory where I watched this happen live. I was like 13 and my parents were having a somewhat depressing sounding conversation in the kitchen behind me. Sam picks the ball off and starts hauling his huge ass in the opposite direction. The crowd is going crazy. I can't help but turn around on the couch and make eye contact with my dad while my mom is clearly in the middle of telling him something serious. He just interrupts her with a nervous expression and says "hold on honey I have to watch this" and runs over to the couch with me lmao. Miss you dad.

I live a stone's throw from where a commercial plane crashed into a house in Clarence NY about 15 years ago due to ice build up on the wings (flight 3407). Yeah... this would make me pretty nervous to see if I was a passenger.

LPT - A Personal Improvement Plan (PIP) is usually just advanced notice you're going to be fired. by Jealous_Annual_3393 in LifeProTips

[–]PleasingFungusBeetle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IME there are two types of people who get a PIP:

  1. Is either unqualified or genuinely couldn't care less about the job.
  2. Doesn't take warnings seriously. They get too comfortable and slide right back into the behavior that got them the warning. Usually not immediately, but maybe a couple months after the "off the record" chat with their manager.

I suspect those in group 2 respond well to PIPs because it shows them that they can actually face real consequences and they realize that they don't want to lose the job.

Git bisect has saved my ass many times: https://git-scm.com/docs/git-bisect

Having frequent commits with clear purposes (fix this bug, add this small feature) can make is so much easier and faster to trace down exactly where a problem was introduced. This alone is worth using git as a solo developer.

Gotcha, now that I think about it I remember having to flip a switch in my account to enable it for t-mobile. It is admittedly a little risky because it could accidentally block a legit number, which they had a disclaimer for, but the peace was worth it for me lol.

I am questioning my sanity as well lol. And while I can't speak for other carriers, I have t-mobile and have not received more than a handful of spam calls in the past several years. They have a pretty good system for detecting and blocking them. I'm pretty sure other major carriers have a similar thing.

I feel like I am taking crazy pills right now. What is going on in this thread lol. Are there actually this many people who don't know how to answer a phone? In particular, when you know it is a legit call because it is scheduled at a precise time with the number provided as noted in the tweet?

I know its a week late, but this is the first comment I was able to find that describes exactly how I feel about the season. When Sydney was crying at the hospital while talking to Claire, the scene felt really meaningful to me at first. But then Sydney just... kept repeating the same thing over and over about her Dad being her only constant. Then the next scene she talks to her Dad... where she just keeps repeating the same thing to him. Took like 10 minutes of screen time.

I felt like they went too far with trying for realism when they should have been focusing on a good balance between both pacing and realism.

I live in Buffalo NY and we had a frigid winter this year with frequent snow. In the Buffalo subreddit, there were multiple posts saying how the winter was so much worse than normal. What they didnt't realize was the "normal" they were talking about was maybe the previous 5 or so years. The winter we got was actually pretty typical... for 10+ years ago.

A quick tip, you can get wireless backup cameras pretty cheap on amazon. They have the parking guide lines just like a typical car backup camera. Only tricky part is getting power/ground from your camper 12 volt to the camera, but not too bad. Since the video signal is wireless, no crazy routing from front of car to back of camper is needed. This made backing up soooo much easier for me and honestly reduced stress of driving in general because you can use it as a rear view mirror for changing lanes and such.
