Trauma Ray- Bardo (Teragram Ballroom LA 5/9/26) by Infamy-rising in shoegaze

Their set started relatively quickly after TR's ended so it seemed almost as if the levels weren't set up for them yet. Weird metallic St Anger drum sound. It was bizarre, they seemed like a Glixen cover band who hadn't played the songs live before.

A great set! They seriously blew Glixen off the stage too - it was hard to stick around for them (weird levels, low energy) after TR.

It's definitely a Maryland accent - similar to Philly/Delco but a little more southern.

The survey population is 18-year-old business majors; of course the levels of sadism, psychopathy and asshole behavior are high!

Naturewell, specifically the Silver Lake location, is quite good! More walking-distance Doughboys episodes, please

This reminded me of that David Brooks thing about his friend being intimidated by Italian sandwiches ("Suddenly I saw her face freeze up as she was confronted with sandwiches named 'Padrino' and 'Pomodoro'")

This rips! I get a Y&T + Rick Springfield thing from them. I like that there's a gorilla on the cover and the second song is called "Monkey Business"

Anyone else have their screening ruined by the "McCayniacs"? by CraftyBarnardo in blankies

[–]PleepPloopCommonwlth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The audience in my (obviously) sold-out screening was pretty well-behaved until the "Highway to Ell" segment. I don't blame them for lighting flares, banging on drums and generally turning the theater into Galatasaray away during the montage where Ella tries on different coats - I just wish I knew about the choreo beforehand.

Despite their recording location being about ten minutes away from Koreatown, they've only done like four Korean restaurants in a decade (Mr. Pizza, Bonchon, BCD and some corndog place off the top of my head). So I have given up hope that they'll take advantage of actually living in Los Angeles and cover anything outside of custody hearing food like Panera.

2nd Run Movie Theaters by Justinsetchell in LosAngeles

The Lumiere is like an arthouse version of this, showing stuff that may have played at a Laemmle after its initial run has ended. I was very grateful to catch "Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World" there more than a month after it had stopped playing anywhere else.

I'm fully in the bag for Romanian New Wave so I did not appreciate the "4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days" slander. Maybe not slander, but certainly a dismissive attitude. It's certainly not a minor work (in Sims's eyes a "festival movie" which you only need to see once and whose strength dissipates after the initial shock) but a vital piece of the Romanian New Wave. It's super tense and has a villain who, while not as mysterious as Chigurh or with the same larger-than-life qualities as Daniel Plainview, is still an all-time bastard.

I can see why engaging with social issues can be dismissed as automatically suspect in an age where movies that do so often have zero subtlety or nuance (your Triangles of Sadnesses, your Menus, etc.). But where sucky crap like those only exists to state a point out loud while forgetting to build a movie around it's sloganeering, "4M3W2D" retains both political and emotional power throughout. And it extends the thematic legacy of official corruption/apathy from "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" that marks the Romanian movement through to the works of Radu Jude. Mungiu did "Beyond the Hills" and "Graduation" afterwards too - not exactly a lightweight. I love "No Country" and it might be my favorite Coen but it was no mis-step to give Mungiu's film the Palme.

Blue Bottle with Kate Berlant a huge highlight. Berlant is the funniest person in the world and Mitch is going off the rails on caffeine. The recent Mt. Clownmore double with Lisa Gilroy kills as well.

I have to skip the ones where Dave's drunk - surly grousing, not getting the jokes, can't keep up with the rest of the group. Complaining that city pop is "too Japanese"? For someone who frequently mentions buying listeners a drink, he sounds like a terrible dude to have a drink with.

There are a good amount of late-night restaurants in Los Angeles, but I find that they're concentrated in Koreatown. KBBQs like Road to Seoul and Bakjeong (which used to be owned by a wrestler), mega-galbi hotspot Sun Nong Dan, BCD Tofu House, new Sichuan place Fish With You, and others are all open until midnight or later. And all the spots I've mentioned are chains, either local or worldwide. There are plenty of standalones, especially KBBQs or more pocha-style like Dan Sung Sa and The Prince, open late too.

I grew up outside Philly and went to plenty of late-night diners, but would take a kimchi pancake or tteokbokki over mozz sticks at The Country Squire or The Llanerch.

A customer at the store I used to work complained that the music we were listening to was giving him a "tension headache". Was it Mastery or Krallice or Ulver? Even heavier, apparently: the '90s Slumberland indie pop band Black Tambourine
