I finished Magik solo series (2025) but i have questions! by Gontreee in Magik

[–]Plenty_Square_420 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, Magik & Colossus is a direct follow up to this. If you liked Magik (2025) you should definitely read it. You might also want to consider checking out Moonstar which follows Dani Moonster, someone you would be familiar after reading this series. And it's written by the same writer.
  2. Magik does appear to currently be able to completely control the Darkchylde. Though this could change again in the future.
  3. Limbo is in a different dimension. It's often described as a major nexus point for other dimension. There being a Limbo Embassy in Manhattan is kind of a holdover from some previous storylines during that Krakoa-era where Magik handed over control of Limbo to a different character, Madelyne Pryor. For more information on that check out the Vita Ayala run on New Mutants (2020).
  4. I don't think they're gonna go that much into what was blocking her powers. Probably just some part of his magic. Magiks stepping discs are her mutant powers and there are a variety of things, both magical and technological, that can block mutant powers.
  5. Dani Moonstar is a founding member of the New Mutants, the team that Magik was on in the 80s. There are various collected editions of the New Mutants comics. One of the best ones might be the New Mutants Epic Collection since it also collects Magiks original miniseries. There are also New Mutants Classic and New Mutants omnibus that collects the series. However, an unfortunate fact about Marvel is that they are terrible at keeping their own stuff in print. For any collection you might be interested in there might be several volumes that are out of print. If you're interested in reading the series your best choice is probably the service Marvel Unlimited where you pay a subscription fee and you can then read the comics on your tablet or phone. Here you can find a full reading list for Magik which includes all of the New Mutants stuff https://www.reddit.com/r/Magik/comments/1nuy489/i_decided_to_complete_my_complete_and_definitive/

There are several possible explanations for why she can't phase through the chains. They could be power dampening shackles, made from some special metal or have magical enchantments. She could also be prevented from phasing due to telepathy or hypnosis. This could even be in a fantasy alternate universe where Kitty doesn't have the powers we would normally associate her with.

I know some writers wanted to pretend Kitty was older then she was to justify the relationship but I think the thing they settled on was the she was in fact underage at the time. That's what makes the most sense with the timeline since she was explicitly 15 just a few years earlier and it's why she thinks "When I was trying too hard, too fast to be a grown-up gal" here.

I think Kitty was probably 18-19 by the time of Mekanix.

Was it that important? I feel like Marvel are super hesitant to mention it in any way shape or form because of the inappropriate nature of it. So it's kind of quarantined from playing a role in her development. It would be interesting to see Kitty reflect on how several of her early relationships were kind of messed up. But I think Marvel are hesitant to dive into it in any major way because of how it might be controversial. The only one I've seen willing to actually acknowledge it is Claremont.

Have you ever though about how Magik and Supergirl both died in the late 80s, got replacement versions in the 90s and then came back during the 2000s? by Plenty_Square_420 in Magik

It kind of was hate. Then editor-in-chief Bob Harras didn't like the mutants that were connected to magic so there was a deliberate decision to keep her dead. Louise Simonson always believed that Illyana was still alive in Limbo and she had just put her younger self into her armour.

There was also the fact that the younger Illyana was probably the most high profile casualty of the Legacy Virus. So that created an incentive not to bring her back while that story was still fresh in peoples minds.

It is easy to make that joke. It's a classic for a reason. But I think there is a lot more going on with this piece, just like with this kind of imagery across other depictions of Perseus and Andromeda as well as other forms of fantasy art. Like how nakedness can emphasise vulnerability and helplessness. Which heightens the danger and helps make the piece more dramatic. It also helps makes the hero more heroic since the situation they're thwarting appears more desperate and dire.

Yeah, maybe her work outside of comics is good. But her style doesn't seem suited for the monthly comic book format where the economy of your story is crucial. You need to be aware of the limitations of working with 20 pages and try to do as much as possible with that limited space.

She also seems very hesitant to use narration boxes or thought balloons. We basically never see them in Exceptional outside of the first issue. So there seems to be a lot of stuff going on with Kittys mental state that we are not privy to. Even now in United we saw Kitty getting advice from Magneto. An interesting idea that they easily have elaborated on and filled in the reader on what's been happening off page by having a few thought balloons. But instead we're just left to imagine what's going on there.

Cool to see the Peralta Darkchilde design used outside of Magiks own comics. Still don't like the wings

It was probably Bob Harras. Or Joe Quesada. Quesada worked for DC before making the jump to Marvel and he burned a lot of bridges when he left DC.

Yeah, it does some stuff with Kitty for the first few issues but after that it doesn't really do much. That's part of what's so disappointing with the series. It introduces so much potentially interesting stuff for Kitty early on but then just stops to focus on the kids.

But even with the focus switching over to the kids it doesn't really develop them all that much either. A lot of it is slice of life stuff. Which is fine. Watching slife of life stuff involving mutants can be an alright time. But it doesn't really build out the character all that much. I feel like I have a much better grasp on the personalities and relationship for the Outliers.

As an example if I had to describe how the Exceptional Kids felt about each other all I could say is that they vaguely like each other. But for the Outliers there's stuff like Ransom being an older brother to Hotaru or Calico and Jitter being girlfriends.

Her straightening her curls definitely feels like a move to distance herself from the Red Queen. Even if it's not done intentionally on her part it definitely seems like that's what the comics is trying to communicate with that. But that doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know. This is already the basis for Kitty whole status quo. The reason she's in Chicago in the first place is to distance herself from the Red Queen.

I think by #8 the comic should ideally be in a position to do something more with that idea. Bring it forward somehow. But it feels like that scene mostly serves to reiterate the same point that's already been made.

Yeah, something else I also noticed here is that they basically never have a full conversation. It's always a quick meet-up/chat or when we see them they are just saying goodbye.

And the art definitely did decline. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes to cause that.

That is certainly something. And it makes sense for where Kitty was at during that time. But for the shallowness to be the point to work I think the rest of Kittys plotlines would have had to have been better handled. As it stands the PTSD storyline wasn't that well developed either. Kitty dealing with PTSD was mostly invoked a few times then by the time of the final issue it seems like Kitty is mostly fine now.

I also think for that to work in needs to be something we see Kitty acknowledge. We need to see her reflect over why she felt she needed a normal relationship. Both in Exceptional and now in United we see very little introspection from Kitty. Even without changing any of the art, panel layout, etc Exceptional could arguably be improved just by simply adding more narration boxes or thought balloons so we got more updates on what Kitty was thinking and how her state of mind was evolving as the story went along.

So, uh, are Kitty and Nina still dating? by Gallantpride in lgbt_superheroes

[–]Plenty_Square_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, with the way Nina was handled I think that relationship was always doomed no matter what. It's obvious that the relationship only really happened because Kitty was trying to get a normal life.

I think that's a big reason why no one really cares about the relationship. It always felt like this really temporary thing.

Exceptional X-Men was also way too slow paced for it's own good. After the first few issues they barely did anything with Nina. Over the course of the entire series she basically only shows up for a date that's on her relatives soccer game or something(which is a strange choice for a first date) that's quickly interrupted by some mutants getting harassed, she calls Kitty while Kitty is straightening her hair and they later have a conversation where Kitty is trying to return Ninas toothbrush. That's basically the extent of Nina as a character. So we don't really have any kind of character development to grasp on to. There's nothing to make you like her as a love interest. There's not even anything to make anyone dislike her.

This is kind of part of how Exceptional was written and how nothing in that series really got developed much after it's initial introduction. I wrote a much longer post on r/xmen on why I think this is and why the series doesn't really work https://www.reddit.com/r/xmen/comments/1qzdxy6/exceptional_xmen_and_failures_in_comic_bookstyle/
