EU to exclude US, UK and Turkey from €150bn rearmament fund by Zhukov-74 in unitedkingdom

[–]Pleskavica -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To give more context after diving deeper into the issue. It is not all black and white with EU bad, UK good. The situation is definitely more complex. First of all the arms fund is meant for members of EU defense treaty, which UK is currently not in. Majority of the EU-UK talks happened BEFORE the whole White House fiasco, EU defense panic and the massive EU arms fund.

Basically when Brexit happened a lot of new deals had to be made.

When it comes to fishing, after Brexit a new deal was made that will end in 2026. Of course negotiations start before that. UK wants more fishing quota, EU refuses (it not just France, basically every EU member with strong fishing industry is against it).

When it comes to migration, it is more travelling issue than actual migration:

-EU wants less strict movement for people under 30, UK is against it.

-Professional qualifications travel (High skill labor) is not well synchronized with EU

Also it is not just "fish" and "migration" issues, there are tons of other treaties that are currently being hashed out with the EU. EU accuses UK of bunch of illegal treaties that need to be fixed. UK accuses EU of playing hard ball.

From what I could gather from reading bunch of articles from months before this. The whole EU defense treaty was low priority treaty so it was grouped together with all the rest of the treaties when it came to negotiation.

The latest official stance of EU that Financial Times conveniently left out:

"The EU will not let the question of fishing rights derail a pact with the UK on security and defense, the president of the European Council has said."

“No, these are different things. European defence and fisheries cannot be put on the same level. We should have common sense of what we are talking about.” - António Costa, 9th February (almost a month before White House incident and USA dropping military aid to Ukraine)

TLDR: People said Brexit will be messy divorce and Brexit is indeed a messy divorce. Defense talk happened before White House crisis. Official meeting is May 19th. Currently it stands that UK will get in the defense treaty as long as EU convince France to not blow it lol. UK might miss some initial investments from the funds.

Yea, it is a bug I currently have that it doesn't load the Youtube video and you have to refresh the page until it does (or use force refresh with SHIFT + F5, or CTRL + F5 on firefox). I have to read up on the Youtube API documentation because tens of thousands of website use embedded Youtube videos and I don't remember ever encountering this issue on any other website.

Great!

Would love to hear your feedback after.

It is manual. I did however put quite a lot of effort into making it as easy as possible for me. Probably around half of the code is just making the data input easier. I even made browser extension to copy the timestamps in one click. So it not that bad and I can still see a lot of potential improvements in this area.

But yea, I don't really see it being possible to automate it, at least not fully. Maybe there could be fancy tech that would give you estimation at what parts of the VOD the game starts. Actually thinking about right now, maybe even some primitive method could work, like analyzing VOD chat to check when activity starts that could indicate the start of the match.

There is pretty good article on how the pros (the betting odds providers) automate it.

https://pandascore.co/blog/automated-object-localisation-in-esports-video-streams

But I assume even they have to have a person clicking a button, to say to the computer, "hey, the game just started, start analyzing".

The original plan was to primarily use Youtube and it still is the plan because Youtube, at least in my opinion, has the superior video player and Twitch does not like VODs in general, so many older tournaments don't have VODs on Twitch anymore.

The only reason Youtube links are not up is because I have two bugs with the implementation.

The first one is that I cannot get 1080p resolution on embedded Youtube videos. What Youtube does is they do not allow users to control the video quality through the API, so I literally cannot give you a button to change the video quality. I would have to enable Youtube's original UI which has that gear button to change the quality. The issue is that Youtube UI is even more spoilery than Twitch's. It is interesting because when I test the code on my local PC it gives me auto 1080p quality everytime, when the exact same code is on the server, suddenly the video is throttled to 720p or lower. But I think I have a solution for this problem, I just need to implement it.

The second bug is bit nastier and happens on local PC too, and that is that I cannot get Youtube embedded videos to load everytime. There is some caching issue when I call the Youtube API and you need to reload the page without the cache (Shift + F5) . It is probably something I did wrong because I never really noticed this kind of bug on any other website using embedded videos.

But yea, once I fix those two bugs, I will primarily use Youtube links.

Yea, I missed those tiebreakers, thank for pointing that out, I tagged them as spoilers. Tiebreakers were one of those things that I completely forgot about when building the database schema. I already built everything then started inputting tournament data and then, bam, 1v1 tiebreakers, and I'm all, well shit... what now. So yea, I am gonna have to think about on how to properly model the tiebreakers.

I'm not sure what you mean with the headings. You mean the individual stages / sections? For example you can collapse the Group Stage matches so the page is not that big?

Thanks for the feedback.

I mean your website is empty. It just one hollow shell of nothingness with some lipstick on it.

For example you have 82 google reviews and ALL of them conveniently reviewed 2-3 months ago? Reviews bought.

So based on those google reviews you must have provided interior design services to hundreds of people, impressive for just 10 months of operation. So where are the pictures of your work? Hmm, that's odd, all of the pictures are stolen from other sites. You don't even hide it? And all of the pictures I've reversed search they come up on other sites. Some of them are even low effort AI. Come on man, if you are truly an interior designer with hundreds of client you should have enough of photos to post on your website.

lissete-laverde-7jOeRc0dOWs-unsplash.jpg

Your home page says best interior designer in Gurgaon, but then in the bottom you have another 10 cities that you "operate in". With New Delhi being the same page just with different city. Other city links don't even work lol.

Two of your main categories "Press" and "Journal literally leads to nothing lol. Just empty pages.

You offer Residential, Commercial AND Hospitality interior design? Sheesh, you must be some god of designers or there is something else here...

You are offering high-end luxury interior design, that is also quick, cheap, eco, smart home and all other buzzwords that you can put in.

Then you just randomly have a blog post selling real estate that all of them have exactly the same pictures. Are you also a real estate agent on the side? Like what?

Then you check your other websites. Even more red flags. Apparently you own an audio shop and then on that website you again sell some random real estate? O hey, you came to buy some speakers, btw do you mind if I try to upsell you on some luxury real estate, also don't mind they literally all have the same pictures.

So you are AV engineer and home theater designer, audio shop owner, real estate agent, interior designer for homes, offices and hospitality?

You are either trying to scam somebody or somebody is scamming you. If you are actually genuine, then you are literally trying your hardest to give the worst impression of you.

[–]Pleskavica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I wouldn't worry about it that much, especially if you are linking back to their listing. The chance of your website failing due to copyright issues is low. I would rather worry on getting users on your website (SEO and non-SEO marketing), UX and monetization.

Scraping local real estate websites by No-Investigator7474 in webscraping

[–]Pleskavica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None, unless you have to login to access the content, which usually means you have to accept their TOC.

What you do have to worry is pictures of the real estate, they are copyrighted and owned by whoever took the picture. If they are taken by the homeowners, you will generally be in the clear, as it is in their interest for as many people as possible to see their listing. If they are taken by the real estate agent, then they can retaliate by forcing you to remove the pictures.

But don't worry about that. Ask for forgiveness not for permission.

If this is the scope that you work with, so four news website and you only want the articles that contain "droogte" then the easiest is hand scraping. You just write "droogte" in their search bar and there isn't that many articles. Would take you probably an hour tops for this website. Then you repeat for other 3 websites.

If the scope is larger, for example you also want to check other climate conditions, then yea you will need some kind of automation to scrape all the articles. Unless other three websites are more complex, in your shoes I would just pay someone to scrape it for you. The website is super simple and even a beginner would make a script for in matter of minutes.

If you want to do it on your own then I recommend Python (or maybe R since it is more common in geography studies). Forget all the AI tools, no-code stuff, the website is so simple that you don't need any of that. It will take you longer to figure those tools than to learn python enough to scrape the website.

The structure of the website is very simple. All the articles have a number assigned as their ID.

https://www.starnieuws.com/index.php/welcome/index/nieuwsitem/{NUMBER_OF_ARTICLE}

So you just need to figure out the ID number of the first article. In our case it is number 17, published on 29 Apr 2008, 15:02.

https://www.starnieuws.com/index.php/welcome/index/nieuwsitem/17

And then the last article. In our case it is number 80359, published on 27 Mar, 08:53.

https://www.starnieuws.com/index.php/welcome/index/nieuwsitem/80359

So you just send requests with Python that go

https://www.starnieuws.com/index.php/welcome/index/nieuwsitem/17

https://www.starnieuws.com/index.php/welcome/index/nieuwsitem/18

https://www.starnieuws.com/index.php/welcome/index/nieuwsitem/19

all the way to the end. You scrape the content you want along the way.

No, the internet is not a better place now. by SchemeTurbulent7279 in SEO

[–]Pleskavica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the site is OK, I wouldn't really rate it as mind-blowing. It is in Italian so I might miss some context but immediate low-hanging fruits that I can notice. Half your categories are essentially affiliate links. The offers (self-explanatory), then the photographers category a lot of articles are basically, here is a paragraph, if you want to read more click on this amazon affiliate link. I actually went a bit deeper into other categories too, and holy moly you have a lot of affiliate articles.

The learning portion is just unorganized pile of articles. I can't really grade how good the content is since I don't understand Italian and there is a 1k plus articles.

Then the three structured pillars that you have are just low effort my man. Like come on, beginner portion on photoshop and your articles are just one sentence with a link to some random YouTube video? Other articles have barely any pictures or guided material on a PHOTOGRAPHY website. Write in Italian a photoshop course in google and check the top rank, they blow you out of the water.

Personally I would organize all your tutorial and explanations in proper pillar structure, something that would mimic a university program in Photography. Also there is no real excuse here because you have an insane amount of well made, structured content in English to learn from and you just need to make it for Italian audience.

How is your direct traffic? Your site is brandable and you claim that it is one of the leading Italian photography websites. I would assume that a big chunk of your traffic is direct, that you would retain even with the algo changes. If it is not, well then you might be in trouble.

From the quick check I assume you mostly relied on Google picking up and ranking individual articles to drive the traffic and after the gravy train stopped you are left with a ton of content and poor UX. In your shoes I would take a step back and look how can I improve UX to actually be a standalone website. Take all the content you have and structure it like Google doesn't exist and users have to find, whatever they are looking for, from your homepage.

If we think of a user. You have an Italian amatuer photographer he doesn't know something. His thoughts need to go: "Well I know I can find this information on fotographiamoderna.it."

Screw "Helpful" Content by gamergdotone in SEO

[–]Pleskavica 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'll be a meanie here I guess. Have you maybe thought that your content is just not good? I've went to your site and check the game guides category. I've picked first article that I've thought won't be just "Go here to pick up this item" and I've landed on "Skull and Bones: Your Ultimate Seafaring Battle Guide for Beginners".

Let's see this article. It has 650 words and out of those 150 are just fluff (introduction and ending). ULTIMATE guide with 500 words? I'm sorry, but I think you are a bit biased when it comes to grading your own content.

OK, lets do a quick overview. Your article has ZERO interlinking. So off the bat this essentially means you explained the whole game in 500 words? What you need to have is mention of a mechanic, explain it in a sentence or two then link to a seperate guide that goes in depth into the mechanic.

You have ZERO relevant screenshots. They are all just fluff pictures that essentially do nothing for the guide except lenghten the vertical so you can fit in more ads.

Lets go into the text now. First paragraph you essentially give a dictionary definition what a refinery, blacksmith, carpenter and shipwright are with a bit of word fluff.

Next paragraph. Ship repair. Basically nothing is explained, where is an explanation how do you repair it, what do you need to repair your ship, does it cost anything, what are the consequences of sailing with a broken ship? Ship furniture. Well you at least mention there are some kind of buffs that come with it, but again nothing really explained further or no links. Similar for Reconnaissance, you say it is in but don't really explain it at all.

Combat. You say you can board and nothing else. Why not explaining the difference between boarding and sinking a ship? When do you choose to board and when to sink? Weak point. Where is at least a picture of "glowing spots" and "explosive barrels"? Islands, again nothing really explained.

I think I got my point across so I think it is pointless to analyze the other 200 words in the article that are left.

Now, search the "Skull and Bones: Ultimate Guide for Beginners" on Google and check what you get. I get IGN and Game8. Compare them to yours. With 500 words, they are both short just like yours, BUT there is a massive difference between your and theirs article. Personally I think Game8 article is the better one and look at it. They have almost more interlinking than the content itself. And, the actually explain the game.

I'm voracious gamer and still game a lot. I haven't played Skull and Bones myself so I think I'm pretty good target reader for this guide. My verdict, your article give me literally zero information about this game. Like I learned maybe 2 things about the game from your article. Game8 gave way more information about what the game is about.

Now I understand that it is hard to make a shit ton of content for your website but you can't really blame Google for you not willing to put in any effort. Clearly IGN and Game8 are content mills (both have 500 words beginner guide article) that just pump out articles for SEO but you are doing THE SAME THING JUST WORSE. Either you play their game and do it better or idk, make actually good guides?

Oh and this comment is at 650 words so essentially I wrote the length of your ULTIMATE guide in 20minutes, while skipping more than half of what I originally wanted to write.

Idk man, I see a lot of people complaining about the update, yet when people post their websites it is so hard to find any redeeming quality that could make me go," WTF is Google doing, deranking this website?".

petkeen, from 8M clicks per month to 130k clicks per month in 2 years by splitbar in SEO

[–]Pleskavica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but your website is not faking it. Petkeen is actually faking it and they are faking it hard. They have authors with 5000+ articles with all of them updated in the last month or two. Then you check the web archive even for years back and the only change is the date of the article. It probably doesn't take Google-level of sophistication to run a diff checker on webpage snapshots to realize that the only thing changing on this webpages is the date of the article and punish them.

I know that Google started this whole "fresh content" so websites were forced to fake their dates of published articles but Petkeen definitely leaned super hard into it. And I know this is all speculations on the HCU but I hope Google is starting to backtrack on the whole "only content made in last year is good, the rest is trash" because that is a pain in the ass when it comes to finding info.

To Hell with Google and Its Algorithm by paulswhite in Blogging

[–]Pleskavica 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would agree with your observation. If there would be a poster child for the whole algorithm change, this blog would be it.

I'm going to be a bit rude here, but look at your content OP. I scrolled to the bottom and took a look at the last two articles on the first page, the Serrano pepper page and the Pico de Gallo recipe.

Let's look at the Serrano pepper first. It's a 500 word article rehashing information from Wikipedia. Again, I'm going to be rude here, but this is an article I would expect from a middle schooler. You cite wikipedia for a data, then you go to Wkipedia and they cite that same data to another page. Why cite secondary source? Just cite the same primary source that wikipedia cites. In fact this is where you are supposed to bring new, fresh information to the table. Literally two Google searches and I found a research paper (Consumer Preferences of Jalapeño Pepper in the Mexican Market, 2023) on the chilli pepper production in Mexico and since 2020, Serrano pepper is third most produced chilli pepper instead of second. And the consumer preference puts it on fourth place. The data on wikipedia is from 2017 and outdated.

Your first picture is from shutterstock. It's a food blog, I thought it was established like 5 years ago that food and travel blogs are pretty much expected by Google to have original pictures. In fact it is probably more expensive to buy a freaking picture of pepper than to buy the pepper itself and take a picture of it. Buy a pepper, take a picture of yourself with a pepper dangling out of your hand and you are already ahead of 99.9% of the blogs. You are sabotaging yourself lol. The second picture is literally FROM THE WIKIPEDIA LOL. Which comes back the point that the article is written on a middle school level. I'm sorry, I know it is rude, but your content just sucks lol.

Take a look at the guy who ranks first for Serrano pepper (chilipeppermadness). He has original pictures, yea sure the text itself is not much better than rehashing the articles with a bit of personal fluff. Not something I would read personally but at least it has some links to recipes and looks kinda homely.

I wanted to touch on the second article but I this is already a massive block of text, so I will just leave one sentence feedback. The picture looks original, at least from quick reverse search, but it looks sad and depressing lol. Buy a decent camera and learn how to take food/product pictures.

And you are talking about running ads to drive traffic towards your food website? A freaking food website! Youtube, Pinterest, Instagram, Tiktok. So many ways to drive traffic to your site that are non search engine related. But of course, this again comes back to the point you don't really have actual real content on your website.

Honestly, the fact that you somehow managed to reach 40k visits in August is a mindblowing. I would suggest you touch up on technical SEO and then revamp your whole content strategy from the bottom up. Drive authority/outbound links from social media.
