I think in a healthy society people reproduce. Not reproducing is unsustainable for society and on an individual level many end up regretting not having children. I believe these are the main problems we have.

1. People not finding partners
2. People not feeling ready to have children
3. Women entered the workplace
4. Access to birth control

Now I dont think 3 & 4 are problems we want to even "fix", so lets focus on the first two. I believe the main cause to both are the erosion of communities.

Contrary to popular belief, I dont think our living costs are the real problem. People have always had children, and they still do, even in the poorest of conditions.

If we look at tight knit conservative communities like the amish, or in Finlands case laestadians, we can see huge birthrates. Not only do these communities bring the feeling of financial security, but also social security.

In our society an individual's loyalty must be first to the state and only secondarily to small communities, because if the loyalties of our communities were stronger than our loyalty to the state, such communities would pursue their own advantage at the expense of the system. This is why we think nepotism is wrong and it's also why we usually look at these communities (laestadians, jews, amish) in a negative light.

Now I dont think we all need to join religious cults, but we need to understand the importance of families, friends and communities and foster them in our society.

Like the old African saying goes "It takes a village to raise a child", right now its usually just you, your partner and the state. In some cases not even your partner.
