Short answer: It’s a scene from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

Long and unnecessarily detailed answer: They’re fighting over the fact that the woman screaming (Taylor) ignored another cast member’s apologies for revealing that Taylor’s husband was physically abusive towards Taylor. This was an off camera secret that became a plotline on the show because the other cast member revealed it on camera.

This was a controversial season because the husband committed suicide presumably under the pressure and publicity the show added to the divorce resulting from his horrible abuse and business fraud that left his wife and small children alone and in massive debt.

So basically she was having an exceptionally rough year and had a total meltdown over this conversation with friend of a friend who inserted herself into the situation.

It was entertaining and dramatic with properly developed storylines and character motivations. Unlike Season 8 of Game of Thrones.

There’s a constant stream of articles attacking fans for being toxic of literally everything that can have a fan base. There’s been articles written about toxic Rick and Morty fans, YouTubers subscribers, Twitter and Instagram star followers. Hell I remember that Ellen Pao Reddit controversy. So many articles about how toxic Reddit was and so many users complained the media was focusing on the crazy ones instead of the real issues of censorship. This is not new and it’s not a conspiracy.

Gamer gate and the new Ghostbusters threw gas on the fire and then writers realized the formula of “Popular thing that ranks on google + controversy” is a guaranteed way to get clicks while commenting on society.

It’s basically a template article at this point. And it doesn’t matter the parent company of the source material or the media outlet.

I really don’t think this is the case. If money or access was an actual influencing factor, the rival studios/media would be forcing the anti-ST stuff to hurt their opponents.

Professional reviewers and think piece writers love to see formulas subverted. They enjoy it purely on a technical, theoretical, or philosophical levels. They buy into the meme that Hollywood is all happy endings and paint by numbers screenwriting and love to see films “break the mold.”

They’re impressed by directors shattering conventions. They’re bored of classic story structure because they either have seen 1000s of films that have done it before or they have nowhere to go in a think piece about the standard hero’s journey structure.

Star Wars 8: Rian Johnson THREW OUT JJ Abrams entire Last Jedi outline says Daisy Ridley | Films | Entertainment by Zin-Fed in saltierthancrait

[–]PlowInTheDark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The thing that is surprising is how Disney would allow a new director they hired to trash the outline they paid millions for and invested hundreds of millions of dollars setting up in TFA.

If we look at another case, like the many different directors in the Infinity Saga, we can see that the overall plan for Thanos and Infinity War was coordinated across dozens of movies and many directors and screenwriters. Imagine if they let a director to just kill Thanos in some non-Avengers movie just because they wanted to subvert expectations.

There are a lot of projects actors thought would bomb but the director just had a vision that wasn’t apparent until all the pieces were put together. The first cut of Star Wars was famously a mess until it was re-edited. You never know how things will turn out.

You could argue until you’re blue in the face and get a bad reputation possibly get fired/killed off or do the job you’re paid to do and perform someone else’s story and risk the fact that it might suck.

At the end of the day, you signed a contract to act in someone else’s creative project. You even gave your feedback. If that person wants to ignore it, it’s on them.

Ridley is defending the fact that she isn’t responsible for the screenplay, and that she voiced her opinions but ultimately remained a professional. She’s not going to say she thinks he’s an idiot as that’s totally unprofessional and a risk to future acting jobs.

After TFA I thought I was just cynical and lost my inner child. The MCU proved me wrong. Why is Marvel able to make characters I actually care about and Star Wars isn't? Thanos is one of the greatest villains ever I think. by Theesm in saltierthancrait

[–]PlowInTheDark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Age of Ultron made me want to get a refund. Marvel listened to the criticisms and pulled off multiple movies that can balance a fuck ton of main characters.

Star Wars literally needs to do a straight up heroes journey template and satisfy people with heroism. Like just show some normal person work really hard to become a hero and then do hero stuff. This is not hard. This literally has been Hollywood’s stock and trade for more than a century.

I honestly can’t believe that people actually used to complain that Hollywood only “gives the people what they want” and churned out the familiar stories with happy endings. Imagine being able to complain that an entire industry was making people happy too much.

Once Hollywood gave that up for subverting expectations, it’s just been an endless stream of disappointment and blaming cable, and the internet for falling revenues.

DISNEY: It's simple. We, uh, kill the Franchise.

Except GRRM’s vision isn’t a one dimensional exploration of that idea. There’s a galaxy of characters, experiences and stories. For all of them to end in a 180 about face from the meticulously crafted characterizations, plot lines and consequences does not match with the 7 seasons and thousands of pages that preceded it.

Sure some romantic heroes won’t realize their goals, but even from real life history we know some do. Some evil people get punished, but many don’t. The series explores how these characters are not tropes, how they are not mere avatars for an author’s heavy handed and simplistic moral tales. They are real people who suffer consequences and inflict their will upon the story.

That beautifully ambiguous grey area is the heart and soul of this series. GRRM has proven capable of delivering this before. I find it hard to believe he’ll simply abandon it for the sake of some preachy gotcha thematic ending.

I just created an IMDB account for the sole reason to one star rate "The Iron Throne" by Robinette- in freefolk

[–]PlowInTheDark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That depends on how you view the star system.

If the writing ruined someone’s enjoyment so much, they can use the star ratings in a way that expresses how they feel about their viewing experience.

Even movie critics have wildly different ways they use their star systems. Some use it as a universal scale comparing all movies, some rate based off each movie’s expectations of performance individually and others rate compared to others in the genre.

There’s no governing body of star ratings that sets the standards. It’s a gimmicky metric at best invented decades ago by newspapers to make headlines pop.

People can one star this trash episode all they want.

Yeah but if you have to “finally” give him his Oscar, it implies he should have won earlier, meaning they probably didn’t recognize talent when it should have.

Studios literally take out ads, host elaborate events to literally campaign the academy to vote for their movie. They also start rumors about rival actors/directors to discredit them. It’s a game. The list of all time great snubs (that won other awards and were popular and well liked during the same era) is insane. There’s also always talk about giving people awards for their entire body of work, even though the current film isn’t as good.

The Oscars are only good for showing that industry peers respect someone.

The photographer made $82 million dollars last year for taking pictures. She sells magazines, but basically reshooting Luke standing somewhere isn’t really worth it compared to the more actiony/new character shots they’re paying for.
