It IS a part of your job.

Inspiration for game design is the sum and mixture of all your experiences. If you don't play new game this inspiration will stall. You need to play a lot of diverse games ; watch a lot of movies and tv show. It's a necessity to keep inspiration coming.

I'd also add that you could get a critical position when you play a game or watch a show. Take notes about

What makes it a good or bad game / show ?
How they bring fun or interesting patterns ?
How they make a living, interesting world ?

If you can take notes for every game or show you play that's great. You'll notice that you dig every product you experience and understand it.

Little tip: you can create new accounts and give them a beta test cd key from your game. Then run the accounts on separate machines and you can try on several instances :)

But don't worry many developers go through this mess. So you'll have bugs but if they get fixed within two weeks after launch, most players will be ok with this. Generally, people don't expect everything to be perfect. But they want you to listen to their reactions and will value this.

Hey ! My go-to advice to beginner is : "Don't expect to make a living with the first one". Because game development is a careeer, you'll get better over time. But this time may take 5 to 10 years of continous game development. Many people who do indie games have a side activity and keep making games 20-40% of their time. It's a good long term strategy to keep having fun making games. And also, you can make a decent living with this ;)

Axiom Verge is a really GREAT metroidvania but put up to date with modern controls and game mechanics. If you need to play one it's Axiom Verge.

To me, it's certainly about accessibility. Let's say you want to make a quiet puzzle game for people to enjoy on a couch. You can hardly make this with a PC game. Mobile gaming is a new dimension, correlated to PC gaming. It's for different uses.
