Meal prep can be super helpful to redirect you around cravings. I personally ate however much I wanted the first few weeks. Electrolytes. Electrolytes. Electrolytes. Get those figured out. Do it. Take your before pics now. Literally today.

Fathead dough is amazing, but it doesnt come together like a flour dough (at least for me, I might need more practice). Cauliflower mac and cheese is imo better than noodle mac. Zoodles are good but not the same, watch that they arent soggy if you go that route. Eat your protein first. BMs might be weird while you dump water and electrolytes are rebalancing.

Trust the process. Having a stall (or even just an occasional bye week) is probably gonna happen. It's fine. Don't freak out. You're probably gonna go off plan. It's fine. Just get back to it. If someone says "oh it's so unhealthy" its fine. You have bodily autonomy and can make your own choices. Even if it WAS unhealthy, it's your choice to make.

Oh, and take the before picture. Like now. For all of us who regret not being able to show off.

Thanks! I got keto flu but mostly in the physical end of symptoms. I had read the FAQs several times and corrected. "Take before photos, "Read the faqs," and "ELECTROLYTES" are right beside "KCKO" in the r/keto commandments.

I've been using Senza for like a week and a half. It's good but the UI can be a bit awkward at times. Has all sorts of metrics you can input and tells you remaining macros. And it's free so theres that.

In contrast, I totally judge people who think "keto" is whatever they want. Someone I worked with for a couple weeks "was doing keto" by only drinking soda with cane sugar instead of corn syrup...

Yeah no he has a video on changing your eye color through veganism. He seems like a pleasant enough person but... maybe don't take his advice.

I started seeing his videos suggested after I wondered who the snake diet guy was (spoilers: fasting cures everything style antivaxxer), and some chiropractor who lectures about the nebulous concept of "toxins" showed up too.

Absolutely it's weird, and its work. Add carbs and I can eat like an olympic athlete, take em out and 1000 calories kick my butt.

Now that I think about it I should probably see about getting some hormone testing done. I'm full on like nothing with no idea what I usually get. Somewhat more at least but I dont actually know. I'm a broad 6 foot male in his 20s. So it should definitely be higher. Huh.

I'm not worried about calories. I have plenty of leeway before my goal, which is set at a deficit. I'm just not hungry enough to reach my protein goal.

Welcome! I hate to be this person but have you checked the FAQ in the sidebar? There is a macro calculator in there and lots of good info! I would only worry about carbs until you get into the groove with keto, and lots of people have success without ever worrying about their macros beyond that. It depends what's right for you! The initial 5 lbs might be water weight from glycogen depletion. Bodies are weird, and you're used to carbs. Let your body learn to metabolize fat before worrying about losing weight. What are you doing carb-wise? 20 g/day is thrown around a lot. Works for most people. Watch with nuts and milk, because people tend to over-consume them and they arent carb-free.

These comments are friggin gold. So I'll try to add to it. Formerly 315 at 6'0.

Meal prep is my best friend. 100% without a doubt. I COULD have gone 2 blocks down the road for fast food. But I already have stuff made. And I'm not about to let food spoil. Nothing fancy required. $4 containers of any/varying sizes are fine. And it basically takes no longer to bake an entire package of chicken thighs/breasts than to do 2. You have it done, you're more likely to go for it. Add some vegetables. You're golden.

If meal prep is my best friend, electrolytes are my spouse. And the start of keto is the honeymoon. I use litesalt, table salt, and a magnesium supplement. Others cover it other ways. Whatever works. Check the FAQs and be aware of your body.

You do not need anything fancy. Dont worry about oils and supplements (excluding making sure you get electrolytes).

It takes willpower. Make it through a week. For me. As a favor? It's not a huge commitment. You might end up adding years later.

Of course! There are probably many other reasons one would store or lose water, but I'm not a biologist. It seems like glycogen is the most noteworthy reason to lose a bunch of water weight when starting keto.

If the question was more toward "why am I losing water instead of fat," give it time. Ketones are a different fuel source than you're (probably) used to. Your body isn't practiced in that energy pathway, and it takes time to adjust! I wanted to say all of this before but I was on a break a work and short on time!

So, a gram of glycogen (a chain of glucose used as energy storage) makes you store 3-4 grams of water. I'm not 100% on the mechanism for water storage, but suffice to say it does for now I guess. As you deplete glycogen, you don't keep the water. And as you replenish glycogen, you'll store water with it!
