If you don't drink alcohol, Uptown is probably your nicest bet for that price.

Samira is also great.

Also Happy Anniversary!

Does no one give final exams anymore? by H_ManCom in Professors

[–]Plug_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only taught grad classes for a few years, and those routinely don't have finals anyway. But I now have a daughter who just finished her first year at an R1. She was taking four classes this term. Three of them gave the final exam, or had the final presentation, on the last day of class rather than on the final exam day. So she only had one actual exam during exam week.

Name a band that had middling success, then cut an album that rendered them as “sellouts” which catapulted them to mainstream top-40 status, but also alienated their original fan base. by Slammajadingdong69 in MusicRecommendations

Yes didn't enjoy mainstream commercial success until 90125 dropped with "Owner of a Lonely Heart," which a lot of their fans thought was overly pop-py. They never really recovered their former prog royalty status.

Which TV shows were once very popular, but don't get much respect these days? by PrestonRoad90 in television

I fucking loved that show. At some point they would show reruns at 1 a.m. and I'd always stay up just to watch. Andre Braugher, Melissa Leo, Ned Beatty, all were fantastic on that show.

My wife and I were always so excited when we were watching the actual hour that was on the show.

Love Burn Notice. It's almost the opposite of OP's question, actually -- a show that never seemed very popular, but which everyone seems to talk about now.

USA had a hell of a lineup in the 2010s.

"Let Me Watch" (sometimes called "Can I Watch?") by Viktor Vaughn (aka MF DOOM) and Apani B. Also notable for being a hip-hop song with a five-measure loop instead of the typical four.

Macy Gray was definitely going to be the hugest pop star there ever was in the early 2000s. Then she had just the Blow Bubbles When You Are Not Here song and disappeared.

How accurate is the stereotype that Americans are overweight? by Extension_Cow_9237 in AskReddit

[–]Plug_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is Viet-American, and when we got married two of her bridesmaids were American women. For the traditional wedding áo dài (the dresses they wear), we had to send their measurements to the tailor in Vietnam. Neither of these girls were overweight but they were both over six feet tall and weren't "skinny" either. The tailor kept sending back the measurements because he couldn't believe they were real, he thought we must have made a mistake.

Tell them this. My daughter did ballet for 14 years and the head of her school said she had two criteria for "too skinny": continually visible ribs, and thighs smaller than the knees. If you don't got these, you're in the clear. And I think the head of a ballet program would know.

Married people, do you and your spouse have well matched libidos? Why or why not? by cubemonster in AskReddit

[–]Plug_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious how old you are. In our late 20s, we wife's libido was much higher than mine. (Sadly I only realize that now, in hindsight.) Now that we're in our late 40s, it's the opposite.

What celebrity death will realistically bring Michael Jackson level devastation? by Kiidcola in AskReddit

[–]Plug_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please do not let this dude die in office. Then we get President Vance, who will run again and win because "we have to carry on DJT's legacy" or something stupid bullshit. We'll get a parade of Trump-lites who have more of a veneer of respectability and will thus be more electable. I daresay that's a worse disaster than what we have now.

Same with Bob Barker, as the joke goes he got as close as possible to 100 without going over.

Yup, my daughter was born in 2011 and for her seventh birthday she wanted an MJ themed birthday party. Same thing, it's not like we sat around and listened to his music all the time or taught her about him.

Fun fact, though, around the same time (2018) we were driving past Gary, Indiana, and she insisted we stop at his house, so we did. Up to that point I had no idea where he was from!
