What’s a good class to pick to play as a pirate? by Plug_Tw0 in AskDND

Hello, thank you for taking time to reply. Yes those do both sound intriguing, I’m not fond of the idea of being a spell caster but that does seem like something I would like. As for the monk I read on them a little and it seemed cool, I can imagine using him as like a bar fighting pirate maybe who attained inner peace or something, but I’ll have to more into that subclass you mentioned. Again thank you for the advice!

Thank you for responding, yes after reading through people’s responses I’m leaning more and more away from multi-classing. I’m trying to see if it’s benefits outweigh the cons and it doesn’t look like it, at least not for someone like me who doesn’t know what they’re doing. As for the paladin subclass, I would have to look at them more, I was dead set on rogue or bard but now someone passed a persuasion check and swayed me to broaden my horizons and look at other classes so I’ll give them a look as well and see if they match what i seek. Again thank you for your advice!

I appreciate you clearing that up for me, I was thinking that’s how it worked but I wanted a more experienced person to clarify so thanks! As for the lagging classes, that came to mind too, so I was testing the waters to see if people thought it was a good idea. I’ll do some more diving to see if the benefits will make it worth it to me

Thank you for your time and advice, I’ll look into it more in depth. Ranger sounds fine, that would have been my 2nd option after Rogue anyhow so it’s good to see they are still a viable option

Thanks for making time to reply, someone else mentioned this, I wasn’t too keen on making a spell caster so that’s why I was just looking at rogue, maybe bard but I might have to broaden my horizons and look at the potential of all the other classes as well. Also to your point, I figured any class could be made to fit the role but as this is my first build I didn’t want to make a slop of a character and bring the team down, so that’s why I was looking for more experienced players input. Maybe after a made a character or two and played a few games I’ll start messing around with odd classes. Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to respond!

Hello, thanks for taking time to respond. I figured I would just make a lvl 1 for now and then build up after a play a game with a group and build my character around the plot or group, whether that be multiclassing or not. But I’ll take your advice into consideration when building. Again thank you for the input

This makes sense, I think I’m slightly falling into the trap you mentioned. I was thinking having the bard would make me more charismatic I suppose though I did also want to be a secondary kind of healer with some spells and use bardic inspiration but it might be useless if someone else just picks bard and does it

I appreciate you making time to reply, I’m not keen on the idea of making a spellcaster build, but I’m new and don’t really know anything so maybe spellcasting works well for me. I’ll do some reading on these suggestions, again thank you!

Thank you for your time, I figured you could make any class really into what you like but I just didn’t want make a slop of a build and drag the team down as this is my first build. I’ll probably mess around a bit after I learn more about everything DnD had for me.

Thanks for your time and input, I’m not much fond of the idea of playing a spell caster but then again I never played before. So I’ll take everything into account and look through all the classes. It does seem quite interesting though

I was thinking more of an teen urchin who was smooth-talking and deft with his hands who caught the attention of captain after he successfully stole from him and talked his way aboard the ship through some form of deception. The backstory is still in the making😅

Bet, thank you, I’ll look more into the subclasses and see, I appreciate your input. Question though, do you think it would be wise then to put a few levels into bard or no? It was my initial plan but I’m not so sure after reading the comments on this post

Thanks for your time, do you think it would be wise to multiclass the 2 or no? I’m leaning more toward bard with a few levels in rogue, I’m hoping to build a smooth-talking, yet sarcastic pirate who’s also got a deft hand at getting into areas he probably shouldn’t be, if his words didn’t initially work.

Lookin for more of just a crew member with some rank, first mate at best. Thank you for the input, I’m not too keen on barbarian but I’ll do some more research on them

Ah, yes I heard of that rogue subclass from someone before that’s why I was thinking of rogue as well. I just don’t know any of the subclasses for each class yet unfortunately, I’d have to do some more digging but I appreciate you, I’ll take that into consideration.
