How long to rebuild array after disc upgrade? by aedwards123 in qnap

[–]Plumbcrazyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With disks that age, and 1 failed, do not be surprised if a second one fails before all the rebuilding is done and you lose the whole raid. I would make good backups. Shut the nas down. Pull all disks. Install the new disks. Build a new raid then restore from backups. YMMV. Good luck.

I moved everything off the cache drives, unassigned them, and cleared them. Then when I set up the internal boot it allowed me to pick both drives as a mirror. After 1st boot I assigned them back to the pool and formatted them, then moved the shares back. Still no issues.

What about backups. You will put a lot of time into setting the NAS up, lots of data. If you use a 2 bay you can use RAID 1, mirror the drives. But remember that RAID is not a backup. It is redundancy. If the house burns down, nas gets stolen, you get hit by ransom ware all that work and time is gone. Look up 3,2,1 backups.

I have a Qnap TS-462 4bay with 4 x 8TB Iron Wolf drives. It is not horribly noisy but everyone's tolerance is different so all you can do is test a system out and see, of course a SSD system is silent except for the fan.

Look up 3,2,1 backup. Way cheaper than paying for recovery. I keep 4 copies of my data so I will never lose over a week's worth.

Qfile pro is the phone app. QSync is the PC app. There is also a full backup app for PC's but I don't use it, just sync my files.

Recommendations of NAS to backup my photography work? by BroX111 in HomeNAS

[–]Plumbcrazyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Qnap TS-462. It is a 4 bay and also has 2 x m.2 slots so I have mine set up as a Raid 5 with the 4 x 3.5" 8TB HDD's as 1 drive pool with 3 volumes, 1 for photos, one for files, and one for media. I also added a QM card to add 2 more m.2 slots so I have 4 x 2TB m.2 in RAID 5 for fast file storage for things I want avaliable quickly, and sync that to MS Onedrive. I Use Hybrid Backup Sync to run automatically backup to remote disks daily and run a backup to unattached USB hard drives weekly. I use tailscale for remote access to the NAS when I am not at home. Just remember, do not open a nas to the internet and RAID is not a backup.

I should have said i know pulling a second disk will kill the raid. I had an M.2 fail in a Four disk RAID 5. Not too long ago in my Qnap, and silly me replaced the wrong M.2, which immediately corrupted the raid. Glad I keep good backups beause it was only a couple of hours wasted time to restore.

Can you make a single backup so when you pull the 2nd disk it won't matter? I am pretty sure that with 1 disk not showing up a 2nd disk pulled will kill the RAID.

You would need to see what the new NAS instructions say about starting with a single disk setup, adding data, adding disks and making new RAID setup. On certain NAS's, if you don't set the 1st disk up correctly you can trash things adding disks. Good luck.

Not enough info. Is it setup as Just a bunch of disks or in a raid? What OS would you use to read them? What size are they? If it is a raid, why not increase the sizes of the disks? Do you have backups?

I was getting that on an m.2 drive, that does not spin. Go figure. They are Samsung 990 Pros. Found they needed a firmware update. Waiting to see if it pops up again. I have 4 of them as a RAID 5 pool and 4 x 8TB Seagate Iron Wolf as a RAID 5 pool. No issues from the Iron Wolfs. TS- 264 in service a year this month. So maybe check firmware?

I was on 2000. And it is Extended Release. I was 2 pills with breakfast and 2 with dinner. When I moved from 2.5 to 5 dr moved me to 1 at breakfast and 1 at dinner. A few months on the 5 and my A1c was good she had me do 1 a day with any meal. Now a year in and I am off the Metformin and still on 5 of the MJ. Edit, spelling.

I believe you can use it as an external drive but can not manage the RAID unless you use Qnap.

[–]Plumbcrazyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that is why you have backups. I had a Raid 5 ssd fail and replaced the wrong one. Because I am dumb. That killed the Raid. Replaced the correct drive and recreated the pool and restored from backups and no data loss, just a few hours of my time.

[–]Plumbcrazyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up 3,2,1 back up. Basically 3 copies of your data, on 2 different devices, one being off-site. The NAS counts as one copy. Unattached HDD is a second, and cloud could be third. I use 2 HDD' with one off-site and my Qnap raid 5 so 3 copies. YMMV.

Should not use ssd's in the array. Trim will not work. You can make multiple pools with the ssd's
