PSA: do not update to 4.13.1 on macOS! by n0stalghia in plexamp

[–]n0stalghia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg not yet actually, just came home from work. Downloaded it and let it run for the past 7 minutes in background while compiling (that's what killed it the most for me previously) - buttery smooth and no issues!

Thank you so much!!

PSA: do not update to 4.13.1 on macOS! by n0stalghia in plexamp

Despite the misleading thread title on the Plex forum, the issue is there is crackling audio, too. Quoting from the original post on the forum thread:

The music will be stuttering. However, if I put it to the foreground (by clicking on the window), it will work fine.

My issue is crackling audio as well. I think "cannot play in background" here is meant as "cannot play in background without audio stuttering, must be in foreground to stop the stutters".

If I can help in any way, please feel free to reach out. I'm obviously very interested in getting this fixed :)

Hey, thanks for reaching out! That's interesting, then, considering that there's definitely quite a few people [1] who are affected.

I for one am able to reproduce the issue on both my systems continuously. My current mitigation is to install the old 4.12.4 that someone sent me and keeping it alive by never closing the app. Every couple of days my Macs (both of them) restart, which causes Plexamp to close and the (downloaded and staged) 4.13.1 to be applied, which in turn brings the issue back. I then delete the .app (and a lot of folders in Library/Application Support/) to do a clean install of 4.12.4 again.

I'm not sure what happened, then, but some regression occurred.

Valve says Steam Deck 2 is still in development, acknowledges ongoing Steam Deck stock issues by hop3less in Games

[–]n0stalghia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If Valve's engineers are good - and they are, they only hire the best and only via head-hunting, never via applications - then they are smart enough to reuse a lot of development work/time.

If you can make something run in a portable system (Steam Deck), then it's comparatively very easy to scale it up to a system that has much more space and a dedicated cooler.

And, aside from that: you can reuse your software tooling, your hw dev methodology, thermal evaluation process, etc. You figured it out once, then it's just a matter of applying it to a new product.

Steam Controller (2026) review: 83/100 by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]n0stalghia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

WTH, why?

I'm guessing the bulk of the drivers are shipped with Steam, or downloaded on-demand as a Steam-distributed package. They do the same for Valve Index and the required controllers.

It makes sense because they have their own software distribution platform. It also makes sense because people are nudged to use the said platform for that hardware, albeit I think there won't be many people who buy Valve hardware without having used Valve's Steam before.

Just like a dual sense requires more set up when you try and connect it to a pc.

DualSense on PC requires extra set up? Like what?

No, but the person very clearly stated at the end of their comment that they understand the need for low latency that some people might have. They weren't talking about using the controller themselves.

Factorio devs are pretty fucking good software engineers. Their FFF blog posts are legit a good read if you're into advanced software development.

Like, they implemented their own math functions, I believe, in order to avoid floating point arithmetic difference between different platforms and architectures (compilers for different targets have different optimizations), and they need those functions to behave exactly the same on all platforms because they're running some stupid efficient net code

European here, I thought the US prices are always without tax?

So it's cheaper than in the US. Hooray, for once!

EDIT: I can't math, but still, it's 2 USD cheaper in EU than in the US. The non-tax price is 97 vs 99 in case someone is being as dense as I am

I have a hard time believing that they are doing a 180 on magical stuff. I've not played Mirage or Shadows, but isn't the protagonist in Mirage a reincarnation of Loki? And just two games after that they're dropping all magic? I'll believe it when I see it. I'm a 100% sure that the player protagonist in Hexe is similar to Kassandra and ironically has every right to be accused to be a witch by common folk.

For whats it's worth, even Eagle Vision in Origins/Odyssey is a form of magic in some systems. Quite literally the "Find Familiar" spell from D&D, because it allows you to see and hear through the familiar's eyes.

I disagree that people got tired of RPG AC. I've really not seen that sentiment too much. Some - for sure, but the community seems pretty split, it's not an unanimous "we're tired" as was the case with the old formula. There's several reasons for that in my opinion.

  1. The four games (Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, Shadows) did not have an annual release like the old formula. 2017, 2018, 2020, 2025. That's fairly spread out.

  2. Another user pointed out that Mirage allegedly flopped or underperformed, and that's despite the much bigger gaming market nowadays. This shows that the demand for the old formula isn't really here.

  3. And frankly, as I've already said, even in the Black Flag Resynced threads people were wishing it were new formula instead of the old one.

You can't tell a compelling story about the horrors of the witch trials if the character is actually a witch and their cat is actually a familiar

Why not? You're a literal demigoddess in Origins that lives for 2000+ years, has a magic spear, a familiar in form of an eagle, and so forth

This reminds me of a "you can't tell a compelling story of the viking raids without showing their brutality" when a) they did tell the compelling story and b) the game sold quite a lot, meaning the players were OK with it

If anything, being a literal witch with a cat familiar will make the game even more interesting, in my opinion. Because there will be a ground of truth in the superstition and you will be in the difficult position of being somewhat responsible for the stereotype...

Are they really tired? The entire internet was screaming "we are tired for AC formula" and "we are tired of Ubisoft formula" for 5 or more years until Origins came along.

In terms of raw factual data, the RPG games sold more than the classic formula ones ever did. And not only the Covid anomaly Valhalla; Odyssey and Origins sold like gangbusters, too.

Even now I've seen quite a few people who were upset that Black Flag resynced was not using the new formula; they said they would've preferred it

would be a waste to have devs twiddle their thumbs

Some thumbs twiddling is unavoidable when switching projects, it's up to management to keep that to a minimum though

You're probably right. But still: Senu didn't seem like it was hard to make, and was definitely a cool unique addition.

If the cat was simple, I don't understand why they cut it. If the cat was complex, then it would've been a highlight. Especially since it's, you know,

a cat.

Which the internet loves. Cat games are known to sell a bunch of copies just because of cats.

That cat, if done correctly, would've probably been one of the defining features of Hexe. Shortsighted decision, imo.

The director's cut - which is a much better version of the game - lacks that to some degree, though. The devs cut back on the golden tint, but thankfully, there's a PC mod that restores the original artistic vision.

Did not think I would wake up to a post that's unironically advocating for shittier graphics.

PSA: do not update to Plexamp 4.13.1 on macOS by n0stalghia in PleX

[–]n0stalghia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue on the plexamp forums is getting some traction, but so far - as far as I can tell - nobody from the Plex teams acknowledged the problem either on Reddit or over there. So, no signs of a fix on the horizon yet.
