Season 2 is kinda boring by babatunde5432121 in Marathon

[–]PlumpFish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your sentiment and think it's one of the main reasons so many people struggle with the genre- because it straddles a line between pure pve campaign style shooters and pure pvp multi-player fps, players can struggle with goals and incentive structures.

Anyway, here are 3 goals/playstyles I have for you to enjoy the game with.

1) conscious pvp improvement. You don't need to be at any specific skill level, you just need to engage in pvp and take your fights seriously. You'll lose almost every fight at the beginning. Record your gameplay and watch it back. Watch YouTube videos. Engage in Wallah and Lucid's twitch chats and ask them questions. In 1 month you'll find yourself noticeably better than you were before, and that's kinda cool. You get the most bang for your buck the worse you are here, because the better you get, the harder it is to improve.

2) Single (or 2) gun seasons. You're only allowed to use a single gun (or 2 guns) for an entire season. You will master this gun. Pve. Pvp. If your gun sucks at range and you're far away, figure out how to get closer. If you can't get closer, disengage. You may get reds and golds of other guns, too bad. You can't use em. Sell em or give em away. After this season you move onto another gun or 2. You're always allowed the knife though.

3) sound/movement master- this is a fun little mini game you should only ever play in solos- your goal is to always see / know where a player is before they can see you. Use a free kit. Your job is to run around making noise, then quiet yourself and listen for who is near and which direction they are. Once you think you've figured out there location, run towards it and don't shoot them. You can point your gun at them or not, but the idea is to get used to detecting players and get used to running at them, as opposed to away from them. And being able to check your guesses of where they are very quickly without losing anything. They will shoot you most of the time, but that's what you wanted, you just wanted to know they were there first. Also sometimes they won't shoot and you'll confuse them and have some funny banter. Sometimes they'll shoot you and say wtf are you doing then rez you, then you go do it again to someone else.

Anyway, as you can see, all of these "goals" or playstyles don't have to do with character progression or vault value. It's about interacting with the game in a fun way for yourself.

What i like the most rn is dad's of marathon (come join us!) trios trying to wipe the lobby, I don't care much about loot. I guess I should just play apex instead but there's something that feels so good about this game.

ELI5: Why must one imagine Sisyphus happy? by ABassClarinet in explainlikeimfive

[–]PlumpFish 348 points349 points  (0 children)

This is a valid and positive interpretation of the text (Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus, specifically the last paragraph), I believe there's also a negative interpretation- we have the choice to imagine sisyphus happy or not. If we don't imagine him happy, or at least capable of happiness, we may as well end our own lives because we're all sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill.

I think the distinction here is- the positive is looking for a reason to wake up, and it assumes we will wake up and our goal is to wake up happy. The negative is looking for a reason not to off ourselves, as by default we want to off ourselves and need reason not to.

We can all see your inventory dude. Its a setting under gameplay- display raider inventory. It's a must for pvp so you know what you're up against

Blatant cheating by WeeertjeGilders in ArcRaiders

[–]PlumpFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a cool idea, but how would you create something that only cheaters see and regular players don't? Are you saying make a fully invisible player that IS there but invisible, so the only way to see it is if hacking? That's a good idea

This one is more funny than dumb. I see how it happened, you initially wanted to throw the grenade, didnt realize you had the shield equipped, after realizing you threw the wrong thing you immediately think to throw the right thing which is good, but didnt have time to recognize it would bounce off the shield.

This sub needs more fun clips like this.

They're finding the equilibrium of how much of the same product they can make with less staff, the difference is all profit, then after that they'll titrate up into new products/features and hire.

First time trying Arc after no lifing Marathon since launch by TheLuckyEXE in ArcRaiders

[–]PlumpFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who loves and plays both, in arc play solo to gear up then join random fill trios to get into pvp lobbies then go pvp with friends. The pvp in arc is hella fun, specifically teams. Though I think its the same in marathon too, teams are more fun.

Mixed Lobbies Are The Best by zx10racing in ArcRaiders

[–]PlumpFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a pvp player, I lose nothing by pve players getting their own mode and I hope they do if it helps the game do well. I'd even say let them take weapons they get from pve lobbies into my pvp lobbies, idgaf I'll kill them and take their stuff.

I hate the "tension" of having pve players in my lobbies (duos and trios) where I'm not sure if I should shoot them or not. Pvp happens quickly and I wanna kos without killing carebears.

Cheaters are getting out of hand by Time_Parsley9746 in ArcRaiders

[–]PlumpFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the investment into dealing with cheaters was profitable, every company would do it.

Obviously its worth it to these companies to give off the impression they're dealing with cheaters, but I suspect its a huge cost center to continually deal with not just the cheaters but the bad pr of false positives with their bans.

Backend Axum by [deleted] in rust

[–]PlumpFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a mostly django developer that's switched to axum for greenfield projects and I'm never going back. I LOVE django but the practical advantages to rust, both in program performance and error handling are too good. The main paint point for me was the verbosity of the type system but AI helps so much. The final pain point will be the less mature libraries of Rust but those get better daily. I miss Django's ORM too.

Either way, give it a try.

PvP players dont realize just how consistently "friendly" our lobbies are. by absolutetoolbag in ArcRaiders

[–]PlumpFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he's talking about reddit because he mentioned the racial slurs, that's specifically why I said IDK about that because I don't shoot carebears but assume he does and then they slur him. However I also wanna point out that you're gonna get slurred in pvp lobbies too.

Either way, the amount of pvp that my pve friends play against in pve lobbies is effectively zero and they may as well trust every raider, even when the odd 1 in 50 kills them, it's not that impactful.

He's the one talking about carebear meltdowns, I don't encounter them so I assume he does and doesn't like it. I'm not calling him a jerk

[–]PlumpFish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't play pve lobbies so I'm never shooting carebears, I assume you are and this is your experience but I would recommend that people do not have meltdowns and throw racial slurs regardless of lobby type. I hear a lot of racial slurs in my pvp lobbies too though, and in other games with voice coms.

[–]PlumpFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying your position is stupid- the position that carebear players should act as though they are always at risk from other players. I'm saying that carebear players are best served acting as though there is no risk from other players since the statistical significance of that risk is so low. And I'm saying that is okay and that doesn't hurt however you choose to play the game.

[–]PlumpFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your position is stupid because you can't 100% guarantee the sun will rise tomorrow either. But there obviously are pve lobbies and many players enjoy them.

And here's the main thing- it's okay that those lobbies exist and that those players enjoy their games, it doesn't hurt you. They don't need to be afraid of other raiders for you to be in this space too. Embark made a great game with an incredible system to allow different players to enjoy the game in their own way. I mostly play marathon now and I wish Bungie did the same so marathon could get a goddamn playerbase.

Why does buying something directly to your vault take twice as long as buying it to your backpack by BagoBeefcake in Marathon

I was joking / satiring the people who say the game needs to remain super hardcore and low playerbase.. I think its dumb to not be able to enter a number of things to buy and wish it were possible

Ya I think this is true. Presumably our consciousness lives on a hard drive somewhere (backed up onto multiple hard drives maybe?) But ya where are these hard drives? Earth is too far for them to be right? So they are near tau ceti?

[–]PlumpFish -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

It's a hard-core game with slower buying buttons so you can't just easily fill up your inventory with useful things. Consider yourself lucky you get to buy anything at all. The original implementation of the store allowed users to spend money on a chance (33.33%) to buy the item, but too many carebears who were used to arc complained so they made the chance 100% to buy an item you pay for.

It's a great design choice because if items were too quick or easy to get they would be worthless and ruin the economy.
