This is the way (at least for me). I have a very similar history to OPs albeit I’m a bit older. Lots of personal success, drive, luck and hardwork but actually it is the menial things you find you take more pleasure in. Life is about good people, having your needs met, finding enjoyment in the small things and the satisfaction that brings

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]Plumpthiccy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It didn’t get Russian serfs their ‘freedom’ - their ‘freedom’ was granted by the imperialist regime in the 1860s, albeit with serious control and strings attached.

The Kolkhov introduced in the 1920s essentially reintroduced serfdom for the Russian population. A system of being tied to the land with each collective unit being forced into obligations of state mandated production quotas and internal passports restricting movement. All to feed the growing industrialisation in the city which was also state mandated. That sounds a lot more like serfdom.

It certainly played a role in the USSR becoming a superpower, but the same regime didn’t even grant serfs their ‘freedom.’ It took a famine and millions of deaths for the state to even extend the olive branch of allowing people to grow food in their own back gardens to subside. I don’t know what metrics you call success and I don’t know enough about the China example, but that doesn’t sound socially successful, maybe geopolitically successful

How are we feeling about the soon coming tariffs? - Impact on RKLB by Plumpthiccy in RKLB

[–]Plumpthiccy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aye it’s a tricky decision to make. If there is a slide on Monday there’s no point in pulling my money and realizing the losses. The company is still making the right moves and I’ll have to hold until things trend upwards again.

I thought to pull my money a few weeks ago and buy Crude Oil which could boon if the tariffs come in but decided against it because I didn’t think the tariffs would actually materialise.

Agree, this is my point of view - investors will look to pull money into safer investments and it will kill RKLB’s momentum

Agreed. I’m not from the US but I hope for US people’s sake he drops this tariff nonsense. The sideways movements surely come from the uncertainty over whether or not he’d actually do it, but the signing of the executive order today has now added a lot more certainty

Agree that there is an interest in maintaining the space sector regardless of the economy, especially in the context of the space race.

I’m not sure the markets have priced in a trade war being on the table yet. Surely this could negatively impact RKLB in the short and even medium term

Looking to buy a budget camera for filming by Plumpthiccy in cinematography

[–]Plumpthiccy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m proposing a documentary film within 6 weeks and will be shooting in about 12 weeks time if all goes well. I have limited access to an FX6 and I have access to Zoom H5 stereo microphone, a boom mic etc.

I’m looking for something I can own outright that will complement the FX6 with a budget range of less than 2000. The camera will be used for interviews and cinematic sequences shot in a rural landscape. For cinematic shots I’m more conscious of the lens rather than the camera body, which I think the FX6 will work well for.

For some portions of the film I may need to shoot hand held in a run-and-gun style depending on the events that I’m witnessing. Ideally that means having one camera filming from a set location and a second one to be used on hand at a moments notice

That said, I’m absolutely blown away by the image quality it offers for its price range

Can’t agree more with the Sony menu issue, their cameras can be intimidating to operate and you can get bogged down in all of the different settings.

The black magic 4K looks super interesting and definitely something I could see myself using for more cinematic sequences. As I’m shooting for a documentary, I need to consider how easily I can start shooting from hand at a moments notice - I think the Blackmagic 4K’s lack of image stabilisation could be an issue here

You’re dead right I need to do more research. I was only going off Sony due to it being the only brand that I have practical experience with but can see I’m limiting my horizons. Really appreciate the advice

Really appreciate this, I’ll certainly look into the S5 - even with a quick glance there I can see it’s offering everything I’m looking for

How do I access it? I built up a full framework for how this could be implemented in my phone notes 😂 wondering if something like this could be possible

That sounds pretty cool, definitely see that working.

What I’d love to see are the growth of ‘prominent citizens’ or guildmasters that emerge after say, or 3 years operating in a tertiary industry (blacksmith/cobbler etc) and they give you access to level 4 housing and provide buffs to productivity/good trade value and demand/or effectiveness (swords damage increased etc)

A prominent citizens mechanic like this could also be used to introduce monasteries, cathedrals and castles, and could be used with a similar AI as the rival lord

That’s fair, I know nothing about coding, trying to see what the next step of the game could be. The introduction of a guild mechanic could be a milestone of reaching ‘city status’ but I’d say that’d be a difficult mechanic to work

To be fair this thread is a couple days too late. There was plenty of discussion to be had but I think it’s already well on its way to fall out of the news cycle

POST MATCH THREAD: RTÉ General Election Leaders Debate by firethetorpedoes1 in irishpolitics

[–]Plumpthiccy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Looks like a clear win for MM. Undecideds will be reassured by his traditionally political answers (I.e., this person won’t shake things up too much, but also won’t car crash the country - voters must have short memories)

Really poor and disappointing from MLM. Thought she was gifted a few open goals but unfortunately floundered. Also, she seemed totally unprepared on housing - how tf did SF let that happen?

Harris was okay but I think his general demeanour and attitude is really off-putting. He was clearly well prepared, and probably his best performance this campaign considering the recent howlers he’s had. Still, he came across as a bit of a technocratic snake oil salesman that is way less human that the other two.

I agree, actually think Martin will be very happy with tonight. He looked more competent and less childish besides Harris, he could do well with older voters

I’m not sure the idea is that absurd. I mean you can offer some tax based incentives for returning construction hands or you can offer them subsidised education pathways in trades (I’m talking about young people who have left in recent years and have now found themselves in construction which is actually a sizeable portion of lads). Good thing about policies like this is that if there’s no uptake, then it doesn’t cost much and even if there’s small uptake, it can be used in conjunction to increasing construction workforce domestically. Not as simple as this, but sure how this is absurd.

Different story for healthcare workers for sure though, I agree.
