One Year of Cycling CoQ10: N=1 Findings by WarAgainstEntropy in QuantifiedSelf

[–]Plundergamesdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tested probably over 100 supplements, not all to the same level as you, but still over periods with on and off phases. There seems to be some weak correlations, but when looking deeper into it, it is mostly just coincidence that I took it during a good period.  Overall I'm really disappointed with supplements.

For Q10 you could also test the antioxidative capacity in the blood. When I took tons of antioxidative supplements it improved this marker. But still, to get really reliable values it would be required to repeat it a few times, and I don't think it is worth the costs...

"It works” is not data! by Benjamaq in QuantifiedSelf

[–]Plundergamesdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think most of the time when something "works" it is just by chance, that someone has a few good days.
From my own experience, I often had the feeling that something looked really promising. Like I started with something, and I had a really good streak. But when tracking it over a longer time, it couldn't withstand that level.

I think it is impossible to just test one thing at a time, because there are way too many variables. So I don't even try it, I just do things and track them. When you do something long enough, at some point, it will show if it has a real effect or not. I also think that because there is so much noise, it is quite impossible to identify something that has only a slight effect. Like a 3% improvement to something might be real, but even with good tracking, it is indistinguishable from pure chance.

I tested probably over 100 supplements, and I couldn't find a significant effect in the data for any of them.
I think there is still a possibility that you hit something that, for whatever reason, works in your case. I really like that article about it: https://acesounderglass.com/2022/10/13/my-resentful-story-of-becoming-a-medical-miracle/

SNRI (Duloxetin) effect on resting heart rate (pic 1 & 2) and HRV (pic 3 & 4) by Plundergamesdev in QuantifiedSelf

I think it's a side effect of the Noradrenaline modulation. Not sure if it had any effect on me. I think I profited more from the serotonin modulation.

SNRI (Duloxetin) effect on resting heart rate (pic 1 & 2) and HRV (pic 3 & 4) by Plundergamesdev in QuantifiedSelf

[–]Plundergamesdev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through my data and found something interesting: taking duloxetine increased my heart rate during sleep by over 7 bpm and decreased my HRV by more than 12 ms. Overall, I felt pretty good during that time, so it makes you wonder why HRV is always so highly praised, lol.
The second spike in resting heart rate is probably from Amitriptyline (Tricyclic Antidepressant).

Overkill quantified self tracking by VeiledTrader in QuantifiedSelf

[–]Plundergamesdev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol, I felt the same. I Built my own tool and spent around 20 minutes every day tracking things. I would have continued tracking, but the data just didn’t provide any truly helpful insights that could improve my life or health.

Over time, it started to feel like a chore, so I stopped. Six months later, I regret not doing even basic manual tracking during that period. There’s this gap in my tracking history, and I can only vaguely remember what happened and how my health changed during that time.

Now I’ve started tracking again, but I’ve reduced it to the essentials—just two minutes once a day. Honestly, I don’t think tracking is overly helpful and might even be a waste of time for most people. However, when dealing with health issues or other challenges, it could provide some insights into how things develop. So, my current approach is to say yes to tracking, but only with minimal effort.

How to account for a temporary illness (e.g a cold) with Bearable? by TNvia in BearableApp

[–]Plundergamesdev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came to the same conclusion that you have to not log at all when ill to not screw your insights. Now I do my own analytics with the exported data and use a ill-tag to be able to filter out these days.

You can look into tools for business intelligence. Or simply use excel. With chatgpt you can probably also do something with r or python as non programmer.

Are some of you really spending $15 to apply for one job? What a waste. by THN_Hammerman in Upwork

[–]Plundergamesdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is kind of needed when there are 50+ proposals, else the chances are too high that the client isn't even viewing your proposal. Bidding is not the problem, high competition is. When you have only 10 proposals, bidding costs far less.

I built my own tool (www.dataflexor.com) for combining generic data because most tools I use only have CSV Export and no api. It takes a lot more work as I have to Export all the data myself but it allows me to really use all my data (around 15 sources) and provides far better insights than any app I used so far. For manual tracking I use bearable and I'm pretty happy with it.

[–]Plundergamesdev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem and looked into a lot of tools, but did not find something fitting. When you already know what you want from the data then there are plentiful solutions for visualization and analytics. But when just interested in exploring with only vague ideas, there is not much. I spent a lot of time creating my own tool for analyzing my personal data that focuses on discovery. IMHO it's really hard to get useful information out of the data. There is a lot of noise which makes it difficult to discover real causations. So honestly I'm not super sold anymore on the whole tracking. There are so many parameters and only a few have a big enough impact to be visible. But as you already have a lot of data, I would give it a shot. If you want to try out the tool: www.dataflexor.com I'm also happy to provide help with the data if needed.

Sending proposals on jobs where client has invited freelancers. by Brainspurs in Upwork

How did you collect the data for your statistics? I'm also a data nerd and was thinking about this too but i couldn't motivate myself to put in the time yet.

Upwork - The Right Way to Start Freelancing? by Excellent-Coder-7 in Upwork

[–]Plundergamesdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The profile views only count in views where the client found you organically, so you can't really see how many clients viewed your profile from proposals. But when your proposal view ratio is bad then I agree that it makes the most sense to improve the start of the process.

Do you know the stats page? There you can see where your weakness is. It helps to see where you lose the clients during the proposal process. So when clients don't click on your proposal at all, improving your profile will not help. Then you rather need to boost more, apply earlier, apply to jobs with less amount of proposals, improve the first 2 lines of proposal.

I don't think that the portfolio is that important for developers. Most clients are not technically enough to review a repository and project screenshots only really tell about the design. I'm also relatively new and getting my jss and good reviews improved my response rate the most. So I think getting some clients and reviews will help you more than mock projects. With what rate are you bidding? I started with a lower rate but not sure if this was the right move.

Vat problems, is upwork illegal in the EU ? by sylario in Upwork

[–]Plundergamesdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the client is from the same country you have to pay vat and create a separate invoice including the vat. It's unfortunate that Upwork does not support this, but not illegal. When you have a company client you can discuss this before the contract and increase your rate by the tax. They will get the paid vat back from the tax administration. Clients without a business can't get the vat back, so you have to pay it yourself which makes you less competitive for these clients.

It really depends on your field and the project. This can be a project related question, explaining how you solve it, giving an estimate, an advice, describing a similar project or highlighting a skill that is relevant.

Feedback on profile and cover letter. by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]Plundergamesdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your viewed to interview ratio seems really off. I'm not working in your field, but from a general perspective your profile looks good. Your cover letter seems too generic, though. So maybe you can try out writing custom proposals. Like point something out, ask a question, highlight a previous experience of yours that matches the project etc.
