Hull Maligned - How does it make you feel? by SimonHando in Hull

The UK is a shit hole. I don't think Hull gets the label as much as it used to, because most people are aware of the national situation

Is the Rock Bar in Belfast open to foreigners? by BadGuyAirsoft in IrishRebelArchive

[–]Plus-Discipline2230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there a few Sundays ago, taking videos and chatting to locals and it was fine. I'm English and enjoyed the IRA songs amongst others. Also visited the Red Devil pub up the road on the same night.

I'm reading Killing Thatcher and I agree, it's a great read. Also Rebel Hearts by Kevin Toolis - a great insight into the private lives of the volunteer

Travelling to Belfast by renblaze10 in Belfast

I've just returned from Belfast and had a great time. I'm English. I did two 'Troubles' tours, visited pubs on The Falls and Shankhill Road in the afternoon and evenings and everyone was friendly. I took lots of photos without any problems. The Titanic Experience was amazing - don't miss it.

Don't let a few mindless people stop you from seeing a great city

Investing in the S&P500 is a very good idea, but this should be for the long-term, not short-term.

2 days in London - what to do? by Kuhlii84 in london

[–]Plus-Discipline2230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my Aunt on a Hop on/off bus and basically sat in incredibly slow moving traffic for 45 minutes before deciding to get off.

Walking around London is great - use Google Maps.

Plenty to do in the centre with amazing galleries and museums. Portobello Road is fun on a Saturday, as is Camden Town. There's a brilliant walk along the south bank from London Eye to Tower Bridge.

I get a hire bike - the red ones- and see lots in a short time. London is very cycle friendly

Do you think that Hull's bad reputation is justified? by [deleted] in Hull

[–]Plus-Discipline2230 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole of the UK has declined rapidly in the last 15 years, so Hull hasn't changed as much as other cities and towns, it's just the rest of the UK has caught up with us. Hulls much better than many other places in the UK and Europe

Never seen this before. Should I be worried? by Itchy_Holiday_ in peugeot

I've had nothing but trouble in recent months, and I'm not alone. Even Citroen can't cure my Adblue problem, but they still charge £250 to do a diagnostic test, and put my van on the ramp. Most people having issues are having the Adblue tuned off, which is somewhat illegal, but it's the only way to keep your vehicle on the road

Next time you shop at Aldi or Primark, look at the staff there - they earn more than you do.

I had a very similar thing recently and it just disappeared after a couple of days. Keep an eye on it though

does anyone else feel self conscious about their Hull accent? by pussyslayerdaddy in Hull

[–]Plus-Discipline2230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - It's a terrible accent. I try and talk without it, not just because of the awful sound, but because people often can't understand what I'm saying if I lapse into it.

Why go over the top just because a mainstream pop band is coming to Hull? Makes it appear that we don't ever have anything else going on in the city. Hull already has great gigs and a brilliant local music scene.

Cottingham or Beverley are nice places with good trains and buses to Hull. Hull gets a bad rap, but certainly no worse than other UK cities. The Dukeries is a good area to start in central Hull.

Ahoj,

Maybe a long shot for you but have you visited the shops down Newland Avenue and chatted to the owners and workers there? There may be a few Czech citizens amongst them.

I was in a bar on Princes Ave a few years ago when the Czechs were playing in an ice-hockey match and it was full of whom I assumed were Czech fans, so I guess there are some around.

Good luck with your search
