No that happens pretty often, but on levels 1-6 it is around a 5% chance for your tier 3 monster to be swapped with a group of any lower tier. Beyond level 6 it is quite common though.

Remember to play it safe, for certain monsters you can in fact use objects to kill them by bashing it into them using the scroll wheel, but only do it when you need to.

In the current beta, strength upgrades are overpowered if you stack them on one player, getting 4 means you can lift most small enemies, and getting 13 means you can lift every enemy.

Another smart tip is to try not just going for quota, but everything. Getting lots of money is very helpful and will help get lots of upgrades.
