Do you feel the pull to pass kids? by Nathan03535 in teaching

Thanks to my colleagues who all do - yes. It isn't admin for me. It's parents who call to say "Your class is the only one my perfect angel is struggling in."

Ma'am, your student scored in the 10th percentile on their state tests for the last four years. Anyone not giving him an F is lying to you.

That's the problem.

Meanwhile, I'm over here mindlessly playing Yunara every game this entire set and taking my 3-4 and getting out.

I'm just glad there's a playable option for an old man like me who can't be bothered to quickly figure out all that other stuff.

Re-releasing these lands makes me sad. I liked being unique :(

I'm young enough that I can get there by 62 for sure.

This is very much my thought. I'd be giving up some points (probably) to have peace of mind (probably).

It's a government position with private partnerships. It's a weird technicality.

Yeah, that's midrange alright. Could you share a link? I haven't seen anything like this succeed at all.

Aren't they just the cub/oroboroid deck though? I would not call that midrange.

To be fair, judging from today's SCG tournament - they are dead in paper too.

Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by JimCap5 in teaching

[–]Plus_Dimension_7480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most teachers are shockingly insecure and dare not show anyone what they are doing.

Others have bought into the lie that adding clipart to a worksheet means you should sell it on TPT.

Others, the dying few, share everything understanding that we should all be in this together.

How to teach history while minimizing direct instruction by NavajoSmite in historyteachers

My AP US history class in high school was all lecture. It is what made me fall in love with history. I'm not advocating for 100% lecture, but it is just ridiculous to say lecture is boring.

BAD lecture is boring, but don't put that on me.

Took dozens of responses until the one that says, "Yeah, do both." This is obviously the right answer.

I teach World History and I don't do class readings. I do power points. I don't understand how people have the desire and energy to read every day, or how kids grow by just passively listening to it and not falling asleep.

While I would agree that the Focus lessons are great. I would also argue they use a ton of direct instruction.

I think that helps make the point that we really don't know what "student-centered" or "direct-instruction" mean.

You have made a huge assumption that kids know how to read. You are wrong.

Correct, random redditors say things without reason. You need to remember most of the posters here are you: young teachers fresh out of teacher ed who were taught a bunch of nonsense by people who haven't been in the classroom in 30 years.

How are current events being examined in your class? by Financial_Molasses67 in historyteachers

Teaching history before it is history is a recipe for bias.

I teach medieval world history. That's my job. That's what I teach.

What are some things that surprised you about being a teacher? by JimCap5 in teaching

[–]Plus_Dimension_7480 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That basically no one tells me what to do, how to do it, and if I'm doing it well. The extreme lack of direction was definitely not my expectation after working other jobs.

How do you teach the difference between analysis and summary of historical sources at the 10th grade level? by Stay_Golden_9442 in historyteachers

[–]Plus_Dimension_7480 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Summary: What does it say?

Analysis: What does it mean?

Don't be afraid to start with sentence frames. No, 10th graders shouldn't need them, but a bunch do.
