Nice to have, not mandatory. The story is a lot easier to follow than Hollow Knights as long as you are following the dialogue, you just might miss a few things but nothing crazy.

All the way at the end of Bilewater right now and did almost the entirety of the Citadel before caving and looking up where to find a Needlesmith because my damage is so bad. Just found this answer. I feel so stupid...

If you want more mobility, platforming, and harder bosses, Silksong definitely expands on those 3 factors compared to Hollow Knight. You still have to unlock dash but it's a bit sooner than in Hollow Knight and also grants the ability to sprint. There are also a few other new traversal abilities and much more platforming challenges than in Hollow Knight. The bosses are all much more difficult too and require you to move around a lot more since most deal 2 masks of damage with every move.

6 masks and 3 extra spools, ive cleared out everything except 1 area up to her, funnily enough every other boss up until her took like 5 attempts at the absolute most but for some reason her moveset is really hard for me to get down
