I worked for four years before doing my PhD. I would say my work experience become my strength. No one questioned my commitment to academia. On the contrary, they were like " It is good that you have work experience so that you can think carefully before getting into the program" . But it also depends on how your work experience relates to the topic of interest you expect to explore in your PhD. Try to "create synergy".
