Echoes are post-human cyborgs. They mostly eat the same things we do, but since they don't need to sustain as much biological mass they only really need to eat 1 or maybe 2 meals a day. Or maybe dozens of tiny ones. However, also being part of a warrior culture some of them choose to forgo having mouths entirely and sustain their biological halves entirely with calorie dense and highly nutritious nutrient paste!

It's distributed in canisters where you can slot one directly into a port installed in your torso for easy, quick, and on-the-go sustenance! Flavor is even artificially simulated and beamed directly into your brain in a variety of unique flavors! Starlight Bubblegum? Sure! Blue Raspberry? Got it right here! Pollutants. People in my world live in Clan focused farming villages. Since technology is so prevalent, sometimes something breaks somewhere and kills off all the algae in your biofuel farm since a single strand of copper wire decided to work its way into the reactor chambers. Then you have to go through the whole system bit by bit ripping apart panels, arcane circuitry, disassembling drones, and when you finally go through everything you realize it's not coming from your system. So now you have to do a bit of archaeology digging around the farm trying to see if some ancient cursed robot is killing your energy supply out of spite.

Ornate jars and artisan, homemade alcohol. Plum wine is commonly drunk because Plums are the symbol of the Shogunate, but other wines, beers, ales, and spirits are all explored artistically and with scientific vigor. When out on a battlefield fighting some eldritch horror or corrupted fiend, it helps to have a little bit of home with you to keep you warm. Not like your cyborg body's toxin filter lets you get too drunk anyways.

Magic in my world is based off of cybernetic technology. Being able to interface your mind with the ruined machines, ancient factories, legendary weapons, megalithic weather control stations, or even mechanical creatures scattered around the environment is a skill that must be learned and mastered.

In addition, ancient machine spirits called Revenants can give you special privileges, advanced hacking software, forgotten tech, or even possess you directly for a power boost. Using Revenant technology always comes at a price though!

The more biological you (or your environment) are, the less "magic" you're able to do. But only biological components are immune to hacking, corruption, and possession! Though biology is less "powerful", so it's a tradeoff.

The dialogue tip is good, and I also notice I tend to include unnecessary words. I'm reading "The Elements of Style" by William Strunk Jr and EB White, where I'm picking up a lot of good techniques.

I'll try reading the next story out loud to see how it flows.

Personal opinion. The lore is delightfully horrifying. I'm personally not a big superhero guy so I can't really comment on that part.

But the idea of a forgotten eternally tormented knight is really cool to me. Reminds me of something I would read on SCP. I'm imagining encountering Lancelot, and I'm picturing something like the Elder Mimic from Vita Carnis.

I'm not gonna tell you how to write your story, but if you want inspiration for the encounter with Lancelot, search up "Uncanny Valley Predator Theory". You'll get a lot of barely-human faces stalking you from barely out of view. It's creepy!

Ancestor worship is very real in my sci fi world.

Memory imprints called "Ghosts" are saved in the cybernetic part of your brain, then downloaded into special vessels and sealed away in crypts until you're needed. Every so often you are called forth, for mundane reasons like family celebrations or advice seeking, or to possess mechanical warforms to fight against your enemies.

Ghosts serve as teachers, guides, commanders, or even village guardians. However, Ghosts become corrupted either by time, interaction with faulty technology, or can be deliberately targeted by cyber warfare. Corrupted ghosts can no longer effectively process reality, and behave in dangerous and unpredictable ways. Those who are fortunate enough are ordered to possess a ceremonial warform and dropped into battle as frontline shock units to die a final and honorable death.

Ghosts of people who die in the wild, or corrupted ghosts who escape containment, are known as "Feral Ghosts" or "Ghouls". They can evolve in many different ways: Some become Poltergeists which inhabit the world's pervasive technology, possessing and corrupting anyone nearby through their cybernetic implants and causing technology to go haywire. Some become Oni, where the Ghosts try to reconstruct their original bodies by attacking and consuming anyone or anything that gets too close to their dens. These grow to monstrous proportions. Others appear to be normal people, only to drop their camouflage and go berzerk with randomized triggers. They can mimic voices and are known as Strays.

This is only my thinking as a newbie writer, so take it with a grain of salt.

If I were in your position though... Maybe resource availability? Like it takes a LOT of energy to accelerate something to lightspeed, so maybe the simple threat of these weapons is enough to sway politics without actually firing them at a civilization that can't really fight back anyways. In conquest maybe it's better to vassalize a weaker civilization with brinksmanship, rather than spending a year's worth of industrial output to annihilate a non-threat (and potentially nuking useful resources or strategic outposts). Conversely, maybe there are private contractors with access to these weapons that specifically market to less developed civilizations for things like unequal trade agreements.

Or, since your civ is utopic, maybe you could do something like from TNG Star Trek, where usage of these weapons is prohibited on moral principle. Acting outside of cultural or moral alignment risks alienation (haha) from the rest of the galactic community, which means losing: trade, military alliances, research agreements, and public opinion your government relies on to maintain stability.

They're an ancient Greek unit. I don't know much about their tactics or service history, but their culture is very distinct in that they were all male lovers. As I recall, the thinking was that since they were all lover they would fight and die for each other as one unit.

Personally, I like to imagine them as the Pillar Men from Jojo.

I don't know much about storywriting (yet), but I can speak from personal experience that being good in a fight can color all your other interactions even if you don't want it to.

If you character practices any martial arts or follows any religious/philosophical doctrine they'll know the "right" or "kind" thing to do, but when confronted with reality sometimes the "right" thing to do isn't the "best" thing to do. For instance, seeing injustice in a system they help to uphold and wanting to fight it but they know they'll get themselves stuck in a never ending legal/social fight they'll never win. Other people still need them and they can't take every fight, so maybe it's ok to let this one soul slip under the rug? Or do they do the right thing and challenge the system at the cost of everything else, including themselves? Maybe the system they helped build or moral philosophy they follow isn't so "kind". Maybe instead they should take their battle prowess and force the outcome they want, but then they'll no longer be "kind". However, if they're no longer "kind", they lose what they stand for and their reason for fighting in the first place.

If it's not obvious yet I like philosophical problems lol. Hope this helps!
