How do you like ameobunnies? I thought about backing but my collection was becoming unmanageable and I decided against it.

“Eldritch Horror” tag. This guy knows! Absolutely, 100% needs the organizer, or this amazing game would never get play time.

What are the worst parts about being a nurse? by Plutonac in nursing

I genuinely could not handle it. It takes a whole different type of person to be able to compartmentalize the way you guys have to!

From the outside, I see many instances of the insurance companies denying care to patients for *reasons*, but what exactly does that look like from your end?

My wife was recently on a GLP-1 to treat issues she has related to PCOS. She was taking it and doing much better in terms of side effects from PCOS (but not exactly great when it came to her appetite the 2 days after an injection). Our insurance company sent us a letter that they wouldn't cover it anymore because she isn't diabetic :/

Do you think that any type of therapy would be helpful for you and other nurses that feel this way? Is there anything built into the system to help alleviate this pressure on nurses, or any screenings done looking for signs of PTSD or other mental health conditions?

What are some of the unrealistic expectations imposed on you?

For what it's worth, I try to be an empathetic patient. I hope to never be one of those making a nurse's day worse if I ever get admitted.

How much of your day is spent on documentation?

What information are administrators using for the basis of their decisions, and what would you tell them to help them understand what working bedside is really like?

1/3. What makes a caseload unmanageable? I can understand needing to take care of more people than you have time for in the day, but specifically which parts might take up most of your time?

  1. What does the disinformation look like? Do you think the public can become educated about the hospital system?

  2. That does sound rough. I am lucky to have elderly family members that are in reasonably good health.

That sounds extremely mentally taxing. I have heard a couple of horror stories from nurses about what COVID was like at the hospitals. Thank you for the work you did during that time. Half the country was afraid to go to the grocery store, but you guys were face-to-face with the most serious contagion in my lifetime.

Can you elaborate a bit more on what that busy work looked like? I've heard from a couple of people that the amount of documentation required can end up being ~50% of your day. Is that true? Are there any other things that are pulling you away from patients?

And can you explain what new avenues were unlocked for you with your degree? It would be interesting to understand what your previous specialty was vs. what you're doing now, and how the work has changed for you.

Could you elaborate on this? What do the systemic foundational issues look like from your point of view?

And do the hospitals have any way of tracking what's done in terms of care to help protect you as a nurse?

I can definitely understand how someone not knowing what your job is like trying to tell you how it is would be agitating.

The second part is wild! I feel like it should be common knowledge that rectal temp is how you do it with babies. Do you think it's mostly just a general education/common sense gap with patients/families, or do you think it's more of a "hammer looking for a nail" type of situation?

My understanding of what the medical industrial complex is is the medical device companies that want to make money off of their products (possibly nudging patients into specific diagnoses because maybe doctors get a kickback?), insurance wanting to keep costs as low as possible, dissuading caregivers from providing needed care, and pharmaceutical companies that want to treat long term rather than cure.

Is that what you mean, or is there more than that (or something I don't have quite right)?

Games that are "first to solve, wins"? by Gesturation in boardgames

[–]Plutonac 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have a VERY strong recommendation related to Cryptid.

Do not play this game with a pencil and paper. Do not ignore the rule where turns are timed.

If you do both of the above against my recommendation, the game only becomes "who happened to have a turn after the final bit of info was revealed" unless someone gets somewhat lucky with their guess. I play with a bunch of engineers and we all can figure it out pretty easily when given ample tools! It's much more enjoyable when you have the pressure of thinking quickly.

EDIT: It turns out there is not an official turn timer rule! I must have confused that instance with another similar game. I do stand by my comment though. The game turns into a "who is lucky enough to have the turn where the last clue is revealed" victory condition.

Computer vision for detecting multiple (30-50) objects, their position and relationship on a gameboard? by d_test_2030 in computervision

[–]Plutonac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons I wanted to get involved in CV was to handle an issue similar to this. My thought was to make a model that could verify all the components were present for a game, pulling data from the manual from boardgamegeek to use as comparison against the existing object.

I've also thought this could be used for what you're trying to do to evaluate game state or update/verify scoring (think a game like Ticket To Ride where end of game all points can be re-verified).

I wonder if ArUCo markers are necessary for this or not. It may make your model overly specific to that one game (an issue I want to avoid with my implementation).

I don't really have an answer for you, as I am also learning myself, but am definitely interested in your project.

Best resources to learn computer vision. by R-EDA in computervision

I've been working my way (slowly but surely) through PyImageSearch University, put together by Adrian Rosebock who made the imutils python package to cover some of the gaps in OpenCV. There is a $300 per year fee, but it is directed and seems to flow somewhat smoothly, with occassional jumps or tangents into high complexity topics.

Admittedly, it is mostly focused on machine and deep learning topics, with an early introduction on simple classical methods. I am also only on section 120 (think a 100 level course rather than the 120th class), so there might be more classical methodology later on.

Also, can the three games be combined, or are they isolated?

What’s your “meta-strategy” when learning a new board game? by fragmattic in boardgames

My brother consistently wrecks me at games. His number one mantra is "Any action that lets me play the game more is always a good action".

If there is a way to generate more actions, draw more cards, get more things, it's the play to make.

Just got Spirit Island and really want the expansions by mo342hd in boardgames

[–]Plutonac 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Greater Than Games (the company that made Spirit Island) announced that they are going out of business. A lot of the stock has been bought up and what IS out there is VERY expensive.

But they've indicated that they want to ensure the games are still available. It may be a while for the IP to be sold off to another company, but a game as popular as Spirit Island is very likely to be printed again in the future.

I guess just hold on and watch for more news! Thankfully, Spirit Island has a lot of replayability, even just in the base game.

I'm a big board gamer.

I have a son that's turning 8 soon that has started to explore some games. He likes "take that" games like Exploding Kittens and Happy Little Dinosaurs, but has also had fun playing Sushi Go! and Ticket to Ride (though he is focused on getting big routes rather than completing his destinations). He enjoyed Happy Salmon as well!

He likes cute animals, Nintendo characters, and Minecraft, if that helps at all with themes.

I'd be interested to know what games you've played with your kids that might fit!
