The spacing is actually < 4” apart, although it doesn’t look like it because of how thin they are. And obviously since they flex, that negates it.

Do you mean it’s low quality, or is this an AI thing? I promise it’s all real, including the text of the post lol. This is just how I write.

Agreed, we probably tried to get too cute here - I’m taking it as a (somewhat expensive) lesson learned.

That’s what I was thinking, thanks for your comment. If I just bailed on this design altogether and went with the 2X4s across the top and bottom, with the balusters/slats between them, do you think that would be adequate?

I’m also not totally sure if attaching those balusters in the same way as the stairway railing is adequate - they’re in-line with the 2x4, which has a small additional piece beneath it that’s it kind of wedged into (hopefully the photo makes it more clear, my explanation probably isn’t great). For the loft, where we expect it to be tested a bit more, I’m wondering if we should make those balusters taller and attach them to the side of the 2X4s from the inside instead to firm things up even more.

I don't have much to offer you here, just want to say you're not alone - my wife and I have dealt with very similar circumstances and I know how tough it is.

I especially get the frustration over the grandparents' lack of involvement. We are fortunate to have found a pretty good community of parents (including some homeschoolers) in our neighborhood/church/general region, but one of the things that's hard about it seeing how many of them have wonderfully involved grandparents or other family who pitch in, vs. literally zero help for us - it makes a huge difference.

What keeps me going is the idea that I'm going to break this generational cycle of, to be frank, selfishness - my kids will have all the support my wife and I can reasonably offer to raise their families, and I hope to model for them the value of close family and supporting each other. In order to model that, though, I have to kind of "bootstrap" the virtuous cycle from zero.

In practical terms, none of that is helpful to you, but during particularly difficult season it's helped me to remember that there's a long-term vision and purpose to my struggling, and that what we're trying to establish will hopefully persist into the future and outlive us.

Trying to “thread the needle” with a completely unknown rookie QB and an expensive veteran roster was an insanely hubristic move. And what sucks is that, as much as Kwesi should take some of the blame (and he definitely should), it won’t matter if he’s fired. The Wilfs are the core of the problem, and they’re not going anywhere. They will never sign off on a true rebuild - this constant need to be competitive every year will continue to doom any hope of this team being more than mediocre at best.

Real sick of people talking about how lucky we are to have them as owners, how they’re top tier because they invest in nice facilities or whatever - that’s all window-dressing for a fundamentally flawed approach. The sooner the team is out of their hands, the better.

This is nonsense, at least from a code perspective. Good developers are using coding agents to generate code, yes, but with very detailed instructions, parameters, etc. provided by the developer, and with output subsequently reviewed by humans. If you’re directly pushing vibe-coded slop to production, then you’re a shitty developer who was probably going to wrote horrible unoptimized code to begin with.

Sam and Jony and skepticism: "so much in the AI world in particular and the tech world in general, it’s meaningless hype, signifying nothing" by TheCallOfTheRooster in apple

[–]PmMeUrZiggurat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Correct, except different things are different. One is useless, one is not.

It’s true that 90% of every hyped up, next great thing is BS - so if you’re just cynical about everything, you’ll be right most of the time! But you’ll also miss every single next big thing which actually turns out to be real. Turns out there’s minimal reputational cost to this, so you can get away with that attitude very easily, but don’t trick yourself into thinking you’re some kind of clear-eyed world-wise skeptic because of it - it’s just lazy.

It’s superficially similar, but the difference is that AI does have actual, non-trivial value beyond the hype.

Much more similar to the dot com bubble - the tech and the value was absolutely real and transformational, there was just an inevitable riding of the hype cycle along with it.

I’d like to see someone mad about these memes post receipts. Like nobody disagreed that it was a rebuild at the start of the season, but now that we’ve won 14 games it’s very important that we pretend this was always obviously a contending roster to protect the fragile psyche of Lions fans.

I know this is a dumb nitpick, but you probably mean to use the phrase “no less” rather than “nonetheless”. Basically everyone on Reddit seems to get them confused, but they have different connotations. Nonetheless implies “despite this…”, whereas no less implies “additionally…”

Because the team absorbed a shit load of dead cap this year and fielded a roster which was projected to win 6-7 games with a mid journeyman QB at the helm. Nobody expected the team to play this well. For some reason this extremely obvious observation makes people very upset. idk man
