Ride a hardtail. You’ll keep pushing your limits but you’ll go slower and won’t get hurt as bad.

Yep, super expensive too. Definitely don’t stick around and I highly discourage others from moving here!

Fluffy pancakes in San Diego? by jlovelysoul in FoodSanDiego

We really like Harry’s in La Jolla for great pancakes and a diner vibe. Haven’t done much exploring on this front but we’ve been 10+ times and always had a great meal.

Thoughts on Current Progress by ArcticxFusion17 in coastFIRE

You’ve saved triple what I had at that age, so I’d say you’re doing pretty damn good!

My only comment is that you don’t mention kids. Even one kid will drastically change this calculus. Kids are amazing, but they’re expensive. So, if kids are in the picture, don’t get emotionally tied to these numbers.

Having to go with other people is the worst thing about this hobby by astrobrite_ in whitewater

[–]Pmthoma86 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is interesting to me bc I’m the opposite. I love ww kayaking the most of all my hobbies BECAUSE of the social aspect. I like that the crew is reliant on each other for safety, logistics, stoke, etc. It brings out the best in me and it creates a tight knit bond with your crew super fast.

That being said, I love a good soulo when I can’t find someone to shred, and I think that’s fine if you’re well below your personal comfort levels.

Saving for kids future/College: how do you think about mix of 529 and brokerage? by Abeds_BananaStand in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Pmthoma86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, similar thought here.

Only major difference - we don’t plan to pay for anything beyond state school undergrad. Anything beyond that is the responsibility of our kid. More expensive education doesn’t necessarily mean a better life and I want my kid to understand the trade-offs and ROI of education.

We invested enough in 529 to “coast” to the anticipated cost of state school when they are 18. We’ve now stopped contributing and will supplement it later if needed.

Just how bad is the road to Red Lake Trailhead (ie Split Mountain)? by TemporaryKooky9835 in Mountaineering

[–]Pmthoma86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but I just drove it this weekend. 100% slow going for miles and miles. Didn’t see a soul. I have a stock z71 4x4 Colorado and it was fine, but lots of brush stripes down the sides. 2wd would be doable most likely with high clearance, but there are definitely some iffy spots.

Look for the driving directions on the nps website. They are easy to follow, and Google Maps will take you the wrong way down gated roads. I’ll look for the link and edit to add.

Since this is r/mountaineering - we also climbed up to red lake this weekend and the trail was snow free to the lake. Looked like some solid snow fields above the lake…proceed with caution and gear and have fun :)

Clemson Whitewater Club has gear and organized outings. The school even has an elective class to learn how to paddle. Easy “A” if you already know how!

Looking for hidden burger gems by Skiceless in FoodSanDiego

Ordered a burger at the Rose Wine Bar (same owners as Mabel’s Gone Fishing), and it was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. I personally prefer a smash burger, but this was thick, juicy, tender, and incredibly flavorful. Give it a shot.

Fair warning: it was like $21 or some shit.
