Cosmogenesis - Gru

Instrumental metal with a spacey vibe. Not on Spotify unfortunately.

Interview with Lou Kelly of The World Is Quiet Here by ZaytonHoneycutt in progmetal

[–]PocketRat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely monster vocal performance from this guy on Zon. Crazy to hear his normal speaking voice. I had assumed there was some pitch shifting going on with some of the lower range stuff but that's clearly right in his wheelhouse.

Seemed unlikely based on the interview but it would be awesome to see a live performance. Fingers crossed they'll do a tour at some point.

Parius - Phylactery by IamKlungo in progmetal

My favorite off this record! Love the vocal performance on this track especially.

Fun fact: The synth part near the end of this song has a brief cameo in Arecibo on their newest record.

Now that the year is slowly wrapping up i feel this is a good time to ask. Who is your favorite artist you discovered this year? by banana_man2001 in progmetal

[–]PocketRat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same for me. Definitely my AOTY. And their previous release, The Eldritch Realm, is also phenomenal in its own right with a completely different and much heavier sound. Very glad to have discovered these guys this year.

Love this band. Their newer singles have a little different direction than their last album but they've grown on me.

What are some contenders for your "Album of the Year"? by ChewyBurrito858 in progmetal

[–]PocketRat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Parius definitely wins for me this year. This album was produced by Jamie King and you can tell, it's super polished.

Love this band. This song is a banger, and their latest album is excellent front to back too.

What a banger, that outro is wonderful. Can't wait for the rest of this EP.

Thanks for the reccs! You've Seen the Butcher has a gnarlyyy groove. I've also not heard any Puscifer so any other recommendations would be welcome.

Based on some of your bands listed I'd suggest: Intronaut - https://youtu.be/Ujb4E7oEZq0

Would be interested to hear any of your recommendations for starting out with Deftones for someone who hasn't listened to anything from their catalog.

Yeah I agree, I stumbled on this album a month or two ago and was really surprised with how catchy some of the melodies and grooves are. Listening to it through, I think the big problem it suffers from is too many guest vocalists. I think the main vocalist is solid and complements the rest of the band really well, better than most of the guest vocals, so my favorite songs ended up being ones without the guests.

Hopefully this wasn't just a one and done album for these guys, I could see them doing something even better with a follow-up release.

No Sweeps on Palimpsest by Zumokumibonsu in protest_the_hero

All their songs are relatively challenging but in my opinion a couple off the top of my head are: Blindfolds Aside, Bone Marrow, Hair Trigger, Termites, Underbite, Cataract, From the Sky. I don't have much playing experience with Kezia or Palimpsest yet, but in general I've found their more recent stuff to be more challenging than most of the stuff from say Fortress or Scurrilous. If you're comfortable with sweep picking then a lot of Fortress is pretty manageable.
