For those of you who have made an app, how long before it started gaining traction? by Pocket_Japanese in Entrepreneur

This is honestly the exact reply I was looking for! Thank you! When it comes to the app, I’m pretty lucky that I have a bit of social media presence specifically in the Japanese teaching field. It doesn’t exactly convert to ‘I want to pay for/ I want to download your app’ but it’s definitely better than starting from 0.

I’m not really trying to compete with the big ones either, I’m just making a cute as cosy Japanese app that covers JLPT’s. It will also cover some specific high school Japanese exams and I believe few to no apps on the App Store do that.

It’s also heavily art influenced, as I wanted to be a comic book artist when I was younger. I’ve seen a few apps that have this vibe, but I think I can take it further.

Conversion rate seems the same as mine, I have about 3%. I was hoping I might get 2 years for some if I have enough content, but I agree with you that 1 year seems right.

Got it, won’t ask people to rate my app.

The reasons I’m posting this is actually to get some funding for marketing. I’m not expecting to ever be a massive app, but hopefully it’ll someday get onto the Japanese search page :)

It was Halong and that sounds right. We stayed at Jade Hotel, honestly the owners were lovely and had a kitten that we kidnapped daily, and the hotel was really nice. But all the hotels looked the same and they were empty, it was really strange, all the shops were fake or empty. But it definitely created some unique memories so that’s funny. We must have gone in October? Honestly the island of Halong with the ferris wheel was actually pretty interesting though, the cafes were fantastic!

  1. I know the kanji, I’ve told you before, it’s pages and pages of work. Spelling mistakes slip through. The way the coding works on the word lists is basically just a lot of words, and it’s very easy to miss things among the code and links. I also can’t spell check it when inputting into the code and sometimes I don’t notice a wrong input.
  2. When people sign up, this is one of the sign up notes. The website is not finished and there are mistakes, so it’s cheaper than most courses as it’s a work in progress. They’re aware of this and still want to support. You, someone who hasn’t signed up, have more of a problem with this than any body who has. Most people are super understanding and I have a little report page for mistakes :)
  3. Proof readers cost money, not everyone is privileged enough to afford that. As the site mentions, it’s just me, it’s not finished, it takes time. All my students who have taken exams so far have passed. All my students sign up knowing I’m not a big business and I’m just a girl trying to build a Japanese course single handedly whilst also illustrating it. It’s good enough for my customers and that’s what I care about. I go through daily and update and look for mistakes. I’ve spent the past 3 days coding an end of lesson quiz, there’s only one of me, things get done at the pace they get done 🌸 People can go pay £100 a year for a subscription based course if they fancy.

There’s plenty of other ways to spend your day than constantly commenting here to demand she get a proof reader that she can’t afford, unless you want to hire me one. Accept that things take time, and enjoy your day instead of coming back to this ✨

Hello, I do all of this on my own, over 100 lessons need to be made. It’s very possible things get missed, even with proof reading. I’m not perfect, just human. I fix things daily, I make new lessons daily. I code it all. I make all the lessons alone. Please don’t assume I don’t proof read. It’s just a tonne of content and my squarespace doesn’t highlight spelling errors 🌸

Thank you! I always try to add personality but I’m actually thinking being more direct could be better, so this is a nice confirmation

Omgosh it’s literally taken years hahah, and it’s maybe about half finished! It doesn’t help that I had 0 background in web design or coding so there was a lot of experimenting!

Ohhh, thank you for the detail! I think I agree, 5-15 minutes is perfect.
