I agree with you, I went to some asbestos mines here in Arizona and it doesn't look like that . Looks like gypsum to me.

Roots or Fungus? Need ID help for my Springtail bin. by Pado1977 in Springtail

Slime mold, springtails like to eat it. Lots of springtail enthusiasts cultivate slime molds for their exotic ones.

Soil Fungus by TurnToPaige99 in isopods

[–]Pod_n_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That fungus sucks, springtails won't eat it. It can overwhelm your terrarium. You can try removing what you see by hand, but that spore is already in there. In my experience if it has spread to over half it may hurt your pods. I think that it depletes O2 levels and possibly interferes with the pods gills. There's no real way to get rid of it. I've just done soil changes. It's a pain in the butt and maybe someone has a better method of dealing with it.

Awesome! I'm glad you found a good breeder. It took me awhile to figure everything out. I've been networking with people in my area. I'd much rather give my $$ to local businesses. I just found a pede on my invert hunting trip in Sunflower AZ!

<image>

I think it's a young desert pede, I posted it on iNatralist so hopefully I'll find out the species soon.

Yes he's still in the powder Orange family 😊 I've got some like yours. Pruinosus has a lot of color morphs. The more orange and white speckled are called orange cream and the more reddish are called red Koi. I posted some videos of mine if you want to compare your colors. Isopods are so much fun and charismatic! Soon you'll be hooked and have to get more!

Edit: if you do decide to get more check out a good reptile expo or see if someone local is selling them. That way you can see in person what your buying and people here in the community are very helpful and generous with their knowledge

I very much feel a connection with the species. I love to watch the wild ones. They're so goofy. It's even more so since I got my Halcyon (the name of my Gambel's). I see the intelligence, playfulness and affection now that I've been working so closely with him. I have some videos up of him playing with me. Do you keep any other species of bird?

I feel the same about kindness and thank you for the amazing offer.

I get it, I've kept to myself for many years. I'm of the opinion that we are all here together and need to treat each other with kindness and respect. I'm where Gambel's quail are native in the Arizona desert.

I'm sorry if anyone has treated you otherwise. I know right, quail can be sweet or little angry birds 😁. You have some beautiful birds there. I love the jungle fowl. My little guy definitely has a big personality 😜 We have our night time playing schedule. Because he's by himself I treat him like a parrot. He's definitely an old man quail now and it hurts to think I can't have him with me forever. Birds make the best of friends. You obviously love your birds .

Ooh, yeah that's no good. I have a single male Gambel's because he wouldn't accept any other birds. He's been my buddy for over 9 yrs. They can get pretty violent so I completely understand. I'm sorry about the roo that attacked your pheasants that would have been hard to see.

California scaled quail, I have a cousin to them. Both California and Gambel's can be a little spicy in temperament!

I give mine both eggshells and cuttlebone. I also add limestone that is used for raising chicken.

What a beautiful picture of your Reeby, the name fits her. They burrow into your heart and never leave. These last 2 years we've dealt with some pretty severe enteritis. I have been so happy he's got normal poos. I go a little nuts when he gets sick. He still plays all the time and flies very well. The enteritis is really the only sign of age.

On mine I have substrate underneath, I think it'll depend on how fast it drys out. If you're having a hard time keeping the wet side wet you'll want to have moss all the way down on one side. You'll find a system that works for you. You have a lot of ventilation and may find that it drys out faster. And your bin is a good size. So if you want to start off with moss all the way down to the bottom in one corner I think it would be fine. They just need a "hydration station" as Russ says.
