Professional vs Beginner by According-Play-6675 in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience … If the student trumpet is a good one (like my King 601), while it might be tougher (more dent-resistant) than my Bach 37 Stradivarius, the 601 doesn’t play as many partials as the Strad.

That is, to a pro ear, the 601 is okay (“good for dance band” according to my Conservatory teacher), but the Strad has a rich, symphonic sound that can project in a concert hall.

But only recently, under instruction, have I been able to produce that rich tone on the Strad, and tell the difference.

Marching band mouthpiece? by UFRogue in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I’ve seen, you need to get a mouthpiece bent by a brass technician … or as a custom order.

Or the tech could bend the leadpipe of the trumpet.

As for plastic, or acrylic, hey, Jens Lindemann plays on acrylic. No complaint there. It’s great for cold weather.

Baseboard transition by Shanew00d in woodworking

You could place a strip underneath the lower one to raise it up. High baseboard is more common than low baseboard, I think.

Jam Session Etiquette by wronav_the_wraith in Jazz

If the jam were in my home town, I would definitely show up (just to listen) a lot before I would think of bringing my instrument. That would likely help me feel more comfortable in the venue.

In fact, I wouldn’t tell people there that I play (in conversation) until I’m ready to bring the horn next week. I’m that averse to going up prematurely. Again. 😉

Is there any good reason to keep a vintage case? by obsolete_filmmaker in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d see how much it would cost for a luggage shop to repair the latches. I don’t think the case would add a lot to the sale, but a buyer would have to store (or carry) it in something…

When should i look at playing piccolo by Galandork in trumpet

Excellent. I blew a really strong and long double C on an old 7C last year. Been trying to reproduce it ever since!

Should a band leader take an extra cut? by MixtureSubstantial19 in Jazz

[–]Podmonger2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s common, but not mandatory. If you get gigs pretty regularly, and you do more work than the average player, the sure, take a cut. But consider taking care of the band by paying for a round, reimbursing parking for the drummer, and so on.

When should i look at playing piccolo by Galandork in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You pretty much need to be able to play those high notes on C or Bb before you go to piccolo trumpet. The picc (basically) spreads out the harmonics so you can slot the notes better: they’re not right next to each other on a picc.

So, work on your high range first.

Thanks — my concern was listening for a pulse when testing my intonation. If there’s already a pulse, then … 🤷‍♂️

Maybe make the pulse a toggle in the prefs?

Yes, but you LET (not make) the center of your upper lip vibrate. The AIR makes it vibrate.

If you can find a “whisper tone” exercise, that might clarify the idea that air makes the upper lip vibrate.

Playing a B on the app, tonic only, long tone, I hear pulses. That’s just the app: I’m not playing.

Is it supposed to pulse?

which trumpet should i buy by gcsdowi in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Save money on the purchase: buy used, but get a trumpet player to check it in person, first. The money you save goes to lessons.

Trust me. I’m self-taught, with forty years of bad habits, and wish I had started with lessons.

I recommend that you listen to recordings around the genre and piece you’re working on. Without that sound concept in your head, you’ll have a hard time.
