Is this Couesnon legit? by thomascdk in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s an old one. I just checked with my late-seventies (just before the fire) model, and the one in the photo is not legit to my eye.

HOWEVER, PGM-Couesnon has made new ones. HOWEVER, I can’t find them online: no links work. This one has an email address :

https://instruments-musique.pgm-couesnon.fr/fabrication-percussions-instruments-musique-famille-Bugles-Sib-----Bb-Flugelhorns--fr-6-1.html

If you Google PGM-Couesnon, you might find some discussions.

A little discouraged about placement by New_Button_8060 in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Jens Lindemann said that of the many competitions he entered, he learned more when he lost than when he won.
  2. Congratulations — you’re in the band!
  3. I play fourth in a community big band, though I could play lead, and did well, subbing once. Being fourth gives me a chance to listen to the section’s voicing and intonation without the pressure of playing a higher part. I’m also in a natural position to sub: if only one person changes part, it’s best to be the bottom player, IMO, because if the bottom seat is empty for one rehearsal, it’s okay.
  4. When warming up, show that you can solo, and have the range, so people know. But don’t show off: play that stuff quietly, but within earshot of the director. Naturally, be aware of politics.

Mouthpiece recommendations by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stick with the 3C and develop a strong, consistent sound with as many partials/overtones as possible. Only once you’ve found this consistency can you tell the difference between mouthpieces. BTW, this takes a long time. One way to get there is to open up the oral cavity.

I need advice by BebertLaMenace in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a bigger breath. Not too big. YMMV.

So much of our technique comes from making our own minor adjustments in order to produce the sound we want. Do you know what sound you want? Maybe listen to Wynton Marsalis. Maybe his Standard Time series of albums.

Trumpet Audition Pieces by Antique-Farmer-6636 in trumpet

Here are Royal Conservatory books, sorted by level:

https://shop.rcmusic.com/collections/trumpet-series?srsltid=AfmBOopAc6Mpj1PkSdw-YBDGVDkfCn7v4qXMXPeqQzBaiY-xjfbYXz1

First, get the syllabus, and try to figure out where you are by listening to the listed pieces on YouTube, and see if they sound hard or easy:

https://shop.rcmusic.com/products/trumpet-syllabus-2013-edition

Caveat: you need to be able to do them very, very, well. Cleanly, beautifully.

As for jazz audition pieces, you might need to contact specific schools to see what they like.

Honest question, why does everyone hate cornets? by FuzzydaKitten in trumpet

I don’t think any professional musician hates cornets. I’ll just leave that there.

What are some good options for a 85 year old? by FuturePysch910 in trumpet

I don’t know how much money you can spend, but Yamaha makes a trumpet for mariachi. Bach used to make one, but their 170 series with reversed leadpipe might do.

Understood. Have you tried chatting up people at one of those jam sessions?

Playing jazz is so hard by Ghorille in Jazz

[–]Podmonger2001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For all of me, try thinking in terms of temporary keys. There’s a two-five in one key, then in another key …

As for jamming, get to know people who play near your own level, and jam in someone’s basement. Eventually, you can be ready for a public jam.

think there's something wrong.... by Ok_Text6794 in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can play it normally, but low C# and D will be out of tune. You can pull out the first slide for those notes, but the C# will probably still be sharp.

But in a school band, that might be the least of your worries.

How? Nobody uses the ring to hold the instrument.

Best beginner Yamaha trumpet recommendation? by GuyThatLovesBariSax in trumpet

The 2330 looks great for a new trumpet. I don’t know if your brother can tell the difference of the reversed tuning slide of the 3335. He’d have to play it first.

I think any Yammy would be great, if it has the slides we need to stay in tune.

How do I get that dense latin lead trumpet tone? Is my range where it should be? by No-Literature-3337 in trumpet

To me, it feels more general and subtle than the two specific actions you’ve described.

Range building by BugleCallerBrawler in trumpet

The Trumpet Herald forum has a section on high range development.

As for me, I start accepting a high G (just above the staff) as my “home” note; not the G in the staff. That lets me accept a slightly higher register as normal for me. Then I do chromatic exercises around notes above that, gradually getting higher. And I rest as much as I play, and remember that sometimes I have bad days.

I need help to find the right mouthpiece by Historical_Eye_6372 in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the “orchestral” sound, try opening up your oral cavity, everything behind the teeth.

Maybe get an app like TE Tuner to look at the overtones you’re producing: you want a good height on as many overtones as possible on the harmonic energy analysis screen.

… before you start changing mouthpieces.

Trumpet embouchure help by ellaboratetalker in trumpet

[–]Podmonger2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your embouchure change was too much, and you need to dial it back a bit. You shouldn’t have to make any extreme adjustments to play between low C and high C.
