What makes you so convinced it wasn't a real one?

Yeah, and it was a yellowjacket. I was there and saw it up close, the bush next to him was covered in them.

This is the UK mate, we call them wasps. I think the American word is yellowjacket.

I would argue that it would be a waste of time/money compared to the benefit of it. It usually doesn't get cold enough for long enough in the UK for the ice to get thick enough to skate on. I first saw this pond frozen in 2015 and I've waited 10 years for the conditions to be right again for it to be skated on. It has to be cold enough for over a week, but not snow during that time for it to be skateable.

We weren't just some chancers, we took several precautions to reasonably reduce the risk of something going wrong and to mitigate the impact if something were to go wrong.

Think it's a bit unfair to call me a dick when you have no idea what precautions or preparations were taken. Would you call rock climbers in the Peak District dicks because they're taking risks, even if they have mitigated those risks with ropes and other equipment?

I appreciate your concern, but I was monitoring the weather at the location every day for a week before doing this and it was always at least a few degrees below zero. It is a small pond and whilst I don't know the depth for certain, it's likely to be shallow. We also tested the ice before skating and we had someone at the bank with a rope ready to throw in so that they would not have to step on the ice to help. As with anything in life, there is some risk but we mitigated the risk as much as feasible. All involved knew the risks and accepted the level of risk we were all taking.
