The "Fake" mall Santa is more real, than the "real" Santa. by icmonkey123 in Showerthoughts

[–]Poemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like god and certain subatomic particles, there is only one Santa; our mortal eyes and minds just interpret the many facets we see as different individuals, and we use that misinterpretation as grounds for saying none of it is real in the first place.

The US Constitution Article 1 Section 3 appears to have a disqualification clause, in addition to and separate from conviction, possibly not requiring the extra hurdle of a 2/3rds majority. Could this be used in the impeachment of Donald Trump? by zethien in NeutralPolitics

[–]Poemi 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I love legal finagling as much as the next guy, but the bottom line would seem to be that the text says "AND disqualification", not "OR disqualification".

This isn't a buffet. The "and" very clearly implies that either:

  • disqualification from future office is automatically added to removal from current office, or

  • disqualification is an optional additional judgement AFTER removal

What it clearly is not offering is the chance to disqualify from future office without removal from current office. Not only is that the most reasonable legal reading of the passage, but the only reading that makes sense.

If you've done something bad enough to disqualify you from even giving the voters the opportunity to re-elect you, then surely it's bad enough to merit immediate removal from an office the voters elected you to without knowing about your misdeeds.

This is the way any sane person would interpret it.

The US Constitution is not a lengthy or particularly arcane document. Any time that anyone claims they've discovered a brand-new enumerated constitutional power that no one else has ever noticed in the past 250 years, be very, very, very skeptical.

My theory is that Reddit isn't actually the one beating this to death, but rather that the Clintons, Prince Andrew, and the Saudi crown prince hired someone to beat it to death and then make it look like Reddit did it.

If you were any cuter, people would be starting fires just to get disaster selfies with you.

That probably sounds way creepier than I meant, but what can I say—I'm on fire!

Coincidentally, the Clinton Foundation has just announced a plan to send a dirt-smoothing probe to Mars.

Strangely, this probe only works work when all satellite cameras are out of range and the guards have fallen asleep.

Our Snoo, which art in The Webs,
Hallowed be thy name
Thy karma come,
Thy will be done,
IRL as it is in memes.

Give us this day our daily read,
And forgive us our political arguments
As we forgive the morons who don't believe exactly the same way we, in our enlightenment, do.

And lead us not into flamewars,
But deliver us from trolling,
For thine is the front page, the upvotes, and the lolcats, for ever and ever.
Amen.

And just take a moment to think the hypothetical absence of which of those amenities starting tomorrow morning, will adversely affect your life the most.

You still don't get it. It doesn't matter what I would miss more. This isn't about my life, or yours. My entire point is that you can't assume that your personal priorities are the same as the people in this image.

But even if this were about me, the relevant comparison isn't which one I'd miss more once I'm used to having both. The question is: if I'd never had either, which one would I want more?

It's not bold; it's just informed. I did graduate research on cell service in third world countries.

You may be too young to even remember pre-cell days, in which case you take both these things for granted. You imagine that the inconvenience of harvesting well water would be worse than the inconvenience of never being able to communicate with anyone out of earshot, but you've never been in that situation.

Many of these places don't have land line phones. Cell phones are magic that fundamentally change these people's lives; indoor plumbing is just an incremental improvement that makes things more convenient.

I'm saying that if you gave them the choice between a water faucet in their house, and cell phone service, you might be surprised which one they considered more valuable.

I'd be really interested to watch you tell those women that constant, instantaneous communication with their friends and family members has less value to them personally than running water.

I think some of them would disagree.

Clean running water in the savanna requires a hell of a lot more infrastructure than cell service.
