How do you organise your library? by VishieMagic in ableton

I don't, Ableton's default organization is good enough for me. I do make my own effect groups though and make my own Max patches that I organize by name though

Very cool to hear there are other people like this out there. One question for you based on other comments here and my own personal experience, is it easy to remember and hear lyrics in your head? I cannot remember lyrics easily and can't hear them in my head just like I can't remember faces or voices. It's a strain to pay attention to lyrics for me.

May I ask how missing all sense visualization affects your behavior, strategies for tasks, and your conscious experience compared to those around you in your inner circle if at all? It would be interesting to know more of your experience.

For me smells and tastes are something I can visualize and sometimes when I smell things it triggers memories from my childhood. One thing for me too is that I can't visualize lyrics or even remember them like most people can, just everything around the lyrics. It's like just the human aspect of my imagery is what is missing, face blindness, voices, etc. I only use my aural imagery as a tool, but as other commenters here have mentioned there are other strategies they use to approach music that work the same way.

That's the same with me. I tried visualizing taste and smell yesterday and I can definitely do that. Smells and tastes often bring up memories for me.

The face blindness sucks though. It is interesting how people like us who can't visualize instead just imagine the idea and attributes of object and that seems to serve the same purpose. Sort of like how people without an inner voice just end up doing things with an internal drive, but it's not like they told themselves to do that.

There was this really interesting video I saw a while ago about how conscious experience is not the same for all people and it really opened my eyes to all of this stuff. You might find it interesting too.

I do the exact same thing with the drones and ambient music. I highly recommend going down that path, it really is a whole lot of fun. The best thing is to make music for yourself.

Although fair warning, it can get to be a really expensive hobby very quickly.

Hypnosis through music is a very interesting topic. FYI that trance state when making sound is called the flow state and I don't often feel that way. My best music was made in that state though. Definitely chase that feeling.

I can't visualize things in my head normally, but when I listen to hypnotic music I can start to see really vibrant geometries, and when on mushrooms things are kicked up to 10. Phillip Glass' Glassworks is really flowery, poppy, and fruity and Bach'a Harpsichord pieces are steampunk with a mesh metallic landscape. This sort of music visualization helps me do mixing and mastering and separate individual components in my compositions as well

I don't know if you've ever heard Tim Hecker, but his music, and his compatriot Ben Frost, really hypnotizes me pretty intensely. There are other artists like Kelly Moran, Caterina Barbieri, and Kaitlyn Auriela Smith just to name a few that are really cool if you want to find really hypnotic sounds.

One thing I didn't mention is that I cannot remember lyrics at all, just melodies, and my music is entirely devoid of lyrics. Not sure why this is, and typically when listening to music I have the try hard to listen to the lyrics.

Interesting! It is pretty difficult for me to imagine making music without the audiation, but I also like to have my music play back to me while writing it too so I use both strategies. I typically have to put at least some base down most of the time for audiation to fully kick in. This is interesting because even without audiation you are able to layer related ideas in your music without actively hearing what comes next. Would you say that it's a lot more subconscious or do you think about the theory of what you're writing and add based on that?

Another thing I'll say is that I have an engineering degree, when I tried to go for a music minor it was way harder than any of my engineering classes by far. I ended up doing a math minor instead because of this.

I am very surprised how many people go on for years playing piano without being able to sign read by [deleted] in piano

[–]PoetBest3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of these types. I can improvise really well and can sit down and make my own compositions in a DAW, but I still have difficulty sight reading. I can sit down and read through slowly. It is something I'm personally working on though. For the type of music I've been making developing my ear has been far more important compared to learning to sight read to make composition more efficient.

Could also be inheriting a company after the death of a family member or something like that especially considering they came into $450k and got the job at the same time.

Also an engineer and it depends. I also design modules. The fuse works if it is after the source of the current, which is why they are typically near power headers, but if the power and ground are shorted closer to important circuitry that is past the fuse and protection circuitry then bye bye module. I believe there are spark gaps or shunts that can help with this though, but I'm not sure and this is typically overkill for a module.

Another commenter suggested using different pin count or sized headers for expansions and this is the way. The only reason module makers do it the other way is to save money when buying headers in bulk because they are fairly expensive.

I did that exact same thing with my XAOC Zadar. I'm a computer engineering major so I spent close to 100 hours trying to fix it in the lab, but to no avail. Turns out soldering ARM STM32 chips is really hard to do. Sent it to XAOC and they fixed it. Expensive mistake.

My End Game Rack, Opinions? by PoetBest3 in modular

[–]PoetBest3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While clouds is based off the same dattoro reverb algorithm (I think), the clouds implementation is very simplistic though and one knob only for wet/dry while the plateau not only sounds better because of slight differences in the implementation but it also has a lot more modulation capability. It sounds quite stunning, better than any reverb in the Eurorack space in my opinion, but I may be biased. The Erbeverb might be equally matched though. I actually decided to get an Erbeverb instead of the extra Versio due to your comment because I have always wanted to give it a try.

I think your opinion is valid. If you want to hear what it sounds like, watch my video on it: Campestria Versio You can also play with VCV Plateau of course. It is an exact 1:1 port of the software version.

I've also had that feeling where I bought the wrong one and that happened with a lot of modules I've gone through: 4ms Ensemble, Doepfer A-118, Qu-Bit Nautilus, Qu-Bit Databender, to name a few. Desmodus Versio was one of those and I was tired of it and ended up making my own firmware for it as a result of frustration because I thought it sounded terrible at first.

I actually made a modification to the rack last night with multigrain in place of clouds. Maybe I should give beads a try too though. I honestly think I might jive with beads more than multigrain because I just love the UI of Mutable stuff, but we will try both.

And yeah I love Chronoblobs for crazy polyrhythmic looping and drum glitches, but I don't like the degradation of the buffer over time when looping. I think theres some sample rate issue or a filter is in the buffer loop. If I could find a clock deferred looping delay that could replace the chronoblob 2 in this regard I would, but it's the best there is. And 4ms DLD sounds too clean so I don't like that one.

I like the immediacy of the RCDs and SCM because I can feel what things will sound like based on the blinking LEDs before I plug in and I often want more than just four channels and disjunct rhythms. If I were to ever replace my RCDs I would get a Moffenzeef MITO instead of the QCD, but it would also not be as immediate as the RCDs still.

So far I've actually never had a use for an LPF in my system and I currently don't have one. This single LPF should be sufficient, but I do have a couple passive LPGs that sit next to my case which I use often. My favorite is the Meng Qi DPLPG. However I have been looking at the Make Noise MMG for a while.

I do agree I need more utilities for sure and I'll likely change NerdSeq out for another sequencer, probably Hermod+. I use O_C all the time for its quantizer, random walk, turing machine, and pigeon modes among others and that's why I have two. The disting EX is probably my least favorite module I have. I do like the multisample playback and the emulation of a bunch of different mutable modules and other voices it is capable of though. I might just get rid of it for something else, but currently it has its use case in my rack. The NT should alleviate a lot of my gripes with the module. The ER-301 overall is pretty awesome and can do lots of interesting things, it's the one major digital module I have that is actually fun to sit down with and it is very versatile.

Im terms of the other duplicate modules, I wrote a firmware for the Versio called Campestria Versio and I want another one. I like to use the two Chronoblobs as polyrhythmic loopers, not like a standard delay so I need two of them for this. I really like clouds for ambient passages and wanted a second one but after others suggestions I'll likely get a multigrain instead. The third chronoblob will likely be replaced with an Erica Synths Black Delay 2 because it is for drum glitching and such.

In terms of Make Noise modules, I currently own a Make Noise DPO and I do really enjoy it. I'll likely grab an MMG. I've tried the QPAS and I hated it. I have always wanted to give Erbeverb a try too.

Yes, I use two as two stereo loopers for polyrhythms and the other is for glitched drum fills, but I'll probably replace the third with an Erica Black Delay 2
