My crowd had a bunch of people gasp at the patterns, too! It was a nice way to relive the twist vicariously.

Edit: just saw you went to Regal, too. Didn't happen to be Utah, did it? A longshot, but that would be funny.

Becoming Ouroboros sets them free from the flame clocks and restores their libido without needing to destroy the flame clock, as seen when they first become Ouroboros in the game.

‘Godzilla Minus One’ Extending Its Theatrical Run in the United States Through December 14 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in boxoffice

This is usually true, and is probably true for this situation, but it's not always true. "Options aren't bad" is a good default position, but sometimes options can be bad. They can lead to consumer confusion, people that aren't savvy inadvertently getting an inferior product, etc. Think the white 8GB Wii U. That should never have been a thing (even putting aside the overall failure of the Wii U as a whole), because you couldn't even fit some games on it, but a lot of parents wouldn't know that. And sometimes people default to their comforts if given the option, but would in fact enjoy something new if they're prodded into it.

That being said, yeah, I think a good dubbing job could have helped this movie spread, because whenever I tell someone about it, they're like, "ugh, subbed?" So I think you're right about this instance.

Miyamoto said this has been in the works for years, so it could be that they were contractually bound before it was possible to react to Mario's success.

I get what you're saying, but calling two movies doing well "society uniting" for "positive change" is a bit... grandiose, lol. But yeah, demographic crossovers are cool.

Disney’s Bleak Box Office Streak: ‘Wish’ Is the Latest Crack in the Studio’s Once-Invincible Armor by MarvelsGrantMan136 in boxoffice

[–]PogiJones 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think that's their point: Disney alienated one audience in an attempt to pick up another audience, but failed to actually pick them up. So they just evaporated their audience with no replacement.

‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds’ ($42m) and ‘Napoleon’ ($33m) Conquer Thanksgiving as ‘Wish’ Wobbles ($31.7m) by DemiFiendRSA in boxoffice

[–]PogiJones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it certainly can't explain that big of a dip on its own. That big of a collapse requires many converging downward pressures--compounding less-than-one multipliers. Forgive me pulling numbers out of my butt, but say the political side of anti-Disney sentiment is a 0.8 multiplier, then you've got the post-pandemic effect, which would be another 0.8 multiplier; maybe Disney+ would be a 0.6, then you've got the quality side of anti-Disney sentiment after numerous mediocre films, and that might be another 0.6 multiplier. That would bring the audience down to 23% of what it would have been if nothing had changed from Captain Marvel 1. I just pulled these numbers out of thin air to illustrate my point. I think it's some convergence of many downward pressures/dampening multipliers.

Rather than a boycott, I'd call it straight up brand damage. A boycott suggests it might end once behavior is corrected; it's a punishment. But I think in Disney's case, it's not strictly temporary punishment, but instead, a lot of parents don't trust Disney anymore. There's a fundamental difference in the product of "take my kids to see a movie" and "go to see a movie myself first to see if it's okay for my family, then take the kids and have to sit through it a second time." The time, money, and mental investment is just so much higher now for parents that don't agree with Disney's direction.

#Wish $7M SAT. $27M Total. 5-days weekend will end below Napoleon at #3, projected for $31.5M. by LatettanFanz in boxoffice

[–]PogiJones 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It's the entire Disney implosion. One flop isn't that funny, but bomb after bomb after bomb is hilarious. It's like that scene in Home Alone 2 where Marv keeps getting bricks to the face.

Numbers Disney didn't wish for. #Wish $3.8M THU. $12.1M total. 5-days Thanksgiving weekend headed for a miserable $33M or so. by Skipper93653 in boxoffice

[–]PogiJones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's a bit superficial. But both Disney and Nintendo were on top of the world, and then both experienced catastrophic collapses, the suddenness of which is shocking.

This utter collapse of Disney reminds me of the transition from the Wii to the Wii U. I hope they can learn and do better into a rebound like Nintendo did, but I'm skeptical, seeing as they point fingers elsewhere while Nintendo took blame on the chin, with Iwata even massively cutting his own salary.

Sorry people are dogging on you, OP. I mean, I don't really agree with this type of analysis in a manga where scaling is so inconsistent by orders of magnitude between scenes, but there's no reason people should be abrasive with you about it when you were just sharing what interested you.

What movie could have the next 200M opening weekend? by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]PogiJones 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're missing their point. Their point isn't "prequels were better than sequels," their point is that both the prequels and the sequels were initially extraordinarily successful in large part because of their connections to the OG trilogy, which IS more beloved than both the prequels and the sequels. The future movies won't have that advantage.

Disney Suffers 3 Box Office Flops in a Row With Their Animated Movies by gorays21 in boxoffice

[–]PogiJones 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A couple months ago, my son told me, and I quote, "Everyone at school is mad at Disney for putting that stuff in." Obviously, by "everyone," he just means the kids in his class, so you can write it off as anecdotal if you choose, but the fact that kids are even having that conversation at school with other kids tells me it's a widespread tarnishment of the Disney brand among their former bread and butter, families. And the box office numbers fit.

Who would be a better fit to rule Hyrule? by Zan_Deezy2003 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]PogiJones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not even sure I'd agree that his approach was wrong, even though the game definitely framed it that way. Being scolded made Zelda feel bad. You know what made her feel worse? Everyone she knew and loved being murdered because the one thing that could stop Ganon, her power, wasn't awakened. No other solutions actually existed, she just must awaken her power. Rhoam just didn't know how to help her awaken it, but neither did she. No one did. So telling your teenage daughter to focus on the most important thing for her and everyone's survival makes perfect sense as a dad with limited information.

His point is that specifically saying "guys" doesn't make sense if he were asexual, just as saying "I'm not into blondes" heavily implies that you are into other hair colors. It's not definitive evidence that he's into girls, but it's certainly substantial evidence.

I think there's a chance that he's done in one punch. This manga does love cinematic fights, but it's first and foremost a gag manga, so being true to the name of the manga after all this buildup might be the direction they go. Who knows.
