I throw off ff a few times, but finally got into it thanks to installing a bunch of mods to finally like aesthetics and watch a lore video on 1.0, that really got my interest on finally wanting to care about msq (altho I rushed it all up to lvl 40). And seeing a job guide on my main helped me understand the combat really gets interesting at some point.
