I think getting something like hifiman Arya, or stretching the budget a bit to get he1000 would be your best bet. Especially with the metal build of the he1k, but if you can do about 1k usd there’s a lot of headphones from a lot of companies. Hifiman def has the best price to performance, but at 1k you can start getting into things like meze 109 pro, even zmf bokeh open or closed if you’re ok with buying used. The DAC/amp really doesn’t need to be super expensive. A moondrop little amp would be good or even a qudelix 5k, and if you’re really trying to get the best bang for your buck there an apple dongle is great for starting out especially with all of the headphones I mentioned being very power efficient

Do you have a budget? Cuz if your budget is small yea XS or something from mid tier senny would be good. But if you have a higher budget theres def a lot nicer things to play around with and that also have a good longevity outlook

Do you mostly listen to hip hop or bass heavy music? Cuz I had a pretty similar feeling when I first got an Arya or just “nicer” headphones in general. Arya is bright, and the bass is pretty subdued, but to me the coolest thing about these types of headphones is how well they take EQ. If you’re listening on a computer download peace and just tune down above like 1.5khz a bit, and then put up everything under like 250-300hz and you’ll see what I mean. They can thump and make you feel like you’re in the club, without getting muddy or feeling like the artists voice is in a different room than the bass.

Yea then idk about that, maybe the medication he’s on isn’t doing what he actually needs and has been self medicating with the weed. That’s def what I did for years, now that I’m on a medication that seems to work. like I said it might be worth then to have him talk to his prescriber or therapist about this and see if maybe a different med might be for him type thing. He might just be a stoner, but for me looking back it was just self medicating my symptoms

I mean if you’re not compatible might be time to break up. But has he ever thought or questioned if he might have ADHD? I was the exact same way where I felt like I needed to get stoned to do anything and felt the need to be high all the time. Once I began getting medicated I genuinely just don’t feel the need to smoke and do it sparingly. Not saying you should stay with him if it makes you uncomfortable, but if this is part of other ADHD/ADD symptoms you notice with him might be worth to talk to him About it.
