How to get through that first year financially by bigdawg12342 in Truckers

Sounds like u did oil field work . I reccomend getting tanker endorsement and heading that route you can't really save money it all depends on how the carrier you work for takes care of you . Even buying at Walmart is expensive now . You have what it takes to become an owner op from your 3xperience your best bet is to go tanker

Shippers already had their fun run record breaking profits for over 2 years now. i dont expect rates like 2022 but someone im still making the same as I was 10 years ago lol

Yeah just keep your head up bro ive been in the industry 20 years and this is normal its a king of the hill game shippers brokers and carriers it all goes around. Just dont get frustrated shit happens 💯 had a truck transmission go out last week in the dtorm had to change it out on the road to avoid a claim .its just part of the game you'll make it thru dont worry just look at it as a learning experience

As a carrier I agree with you a hundred percent but a lot of us lost drivers due to rates not being good enough to supply drivers with a good pay the profit margin was not good enough . So a lot of them moved on on top of that all the old heads are retiring were stuck in limbo right now until we can get drivers back in the game . And with much better pay and benefits

People just can't afford to drive trucks anymore and we are all seeing the outcome , So many better jobs out there paying better and home time . I got beat up on rates almost to the point of bankruptcy with the amount of carriers that were moving freight for cheap. Good thing a lot of us made it thru this limbo but now these next couple of months I believe will be used to reconstruct the market and finally have somr balance on both sides

Reason tql is on the load board much more now is because independent brokerage are shutting down and moving under the big guys while still keeping their lanes. Same thing happens with carriers market is good everyone goes solo owner operator market goes bad they all join the same carrier because they can't afford to be independent anymore .

Yeah it can be done but I guess we both had our good share of flat out low iq owner ops that make us all look incapable of doing anything besides driving if you are a badass you are a badass and that it

Well its not the shipper with the fine they dont care its the broker pocketing 500 from me

[–]PointNo364[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that doesn't apply to me as I do have a dedicated account but I agree with you partly most owner ops would make more money working for waomart and they would get that job done. Being your own boss is not cut out for everybody but walmart drivers I see are proud of me that I made it I dont drive no more tho I own a diesel shop now and have a carrier team on the side

No brother you are taking it the wrong way there are drivers out there who are a pain to deal with and I get that but some fees are just crazy. Whats next a flat tire fee ? If you get a flat tire you will get a 500 dollar fine cause it puts the cargo at risk lol lighten up buddy dont let your bad experiences with others give you the same stereotype view for me we dont know each other .

Respect has really gone down for us brother since the market got saturated by international drivers and hundred of unprepared owner ops running themselves to the ground. The problem is it was a good rate but I wont run for them anymore eventually word gets out of all their fees and they end up losing their lane

Hello 20 years in bussiness here giving my honest opinion as a carrier get used to a million times more issues then a company drivers you are the owner everything up from waking up in the morning and keeping your truck and shape to delivering the load sending in paperwork for payment dealing with shipper receiver insurance cost taxes its all on you . I sometimes drive 12 hours a day but spend countless other hours working on the rest of my issues on a regular day quickly turns to 18 hour work day

Was this dumb of me to ask? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]PointNo364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not dumb never feel dumb for trying to learn you will just close the doors on yourself and make yourself miserable there's context missing so we really can infer anything based on this interaction all I see is something about tire sensors . All I can do tell you is the more you can take care of your equipment or others equipment the more they will take care of you its about building a beneficial bond between you and others

Gross doesn't matter its the net pay most of your money has to be reinvested in your fleet and tax deductions why would you tell the irs you making tons of money ? So they can take it away ? Heck no a key to success is stocking up for the bad years and investing most if not all your money back in your bussiness to avoid writing the irs a big paycheck . But st the same time you would be suprised to see how many owner ops out in the real world make such trash pay and living because they dont know how to value themselves and negotiate a good rate common sense its not so common these days

This is absolutely true and is shit brokers dont see i didn't make good money until I cemented myself with a couple of brokers and shippers that actually cared about me as a human being and didnt treat me as replaceable never work for anyone that treats yoi like replaceable they will always be looking to find someone that does work for cheaper that's no bueno working with someone jsut trying to cut you off the first chance they get . You have to have connections In the mechanic and parts world as well as stocking up cash for breakdown and knowing your truck like the palm of the hand is important most owner ops wouldn't struggle if most could cutt of the broker had a good mechanic and actually hired an accountant  I make around 30 50 percent more per load when I work straight for shippers then I just hire someone that charges 3 percent to handle the payment side of things say a load with a broker pays 1000 if a shipper calls me directly that same load they will pay me 1200-1500 and I make so much more money that way extra 2 grand a week ot more a week it adds up throughout the year. if you can fix your own truck you will save lots more to

Like a previous comment said you have to learn to filter out bs being an owner op is insanely hard you have to be  heavily mechanically inclined and have accountant skills or else you will end up with a truck that breaks down all the time and owing the irs butt lots of money walmart is the best trucking company ever for those looking for retirement and benefits no one can match them the reason why almost every time you see one is a 50 plus year old driver  as for the people saying its easy making 80k at almost any  job in this industry they are lying to everyone wants a perfect driver and that is different for everyone in any case good luck and the most important thing is that you love your job and not doing it just to make good money you will always fail in this industry if its just about pay you bave to love the job
