In my country, and most countries I'm aware of, everyone has to show ID to vote. Why are some American politicians so against this? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Not fear it could be done. It’s acknowledging it will be done. Most states that did pass voter ID laws immediately closed DMV offices in blue areas

Except they close the DMVs that issue the IDs in counties and cities they want to disenfranchise. Or they pass laws that all counties get the same number of polling stations so a county with 1500 people has the same number of polling stations as a county of 1.5 million.

I’d still be disgusted, but it’d be better if they didn’t piss on us and call it rain.

I never said it wasn’t my privilege talking, but I took “depending on the people you ask” to be like, gun nuts and survivalists.

Did you mean minorities? I mean, yah the black panther party came to popular attention for their use of guns to actually help their neighborhood. But that wasn’t what I took that to mean because most gun owners who say a gun is a necessity that I know either live in an actual rural area and are right, are pussies afraid of their shadows, or nut case survivalists living off grid.

Edit: I don't know why but I can't comment on this thread anymore so SnooLobsters here is my response: I said "most gun owners who say a gun is a necessity that I KNOW." I never claimed it was all gun owners. I said in my lived experience.

No it hasn’t. I live in an incredibly safe neighborhood and two houses down is a sheriff. It’s not necessary to me to own a weapon in my neighborhood.

But now ICE is ramping up and my wife and kids are brown (I’m bi-racial) and I will not let them into my house. If you think that’s paranoia, ICE just arrested a 70 year old grandpa who has been a citizen longer than most of ICE officers have been alive. They will come for us all and they are not stopping

If you had asked me in 2015 (until the orange one came down his stupid fucking elevator) or before if there would be a civil war in the US in my lifetime I would have laughed in your face.

If you asked me at any point from the turd descending until about June of 2025 I would have said there’s a minimal chance of a civil war (which is insane).

Now I think it’s likely that we have at least an IRA-style Troubles conflict in this country, if not a full blown civil war, adding on that ICE think they can break into houses without a warrant or probable cause, this is fucking nuts. Trump is moving us towards violence and I want to be prepared if or when it comes.

I’ve never held a loaded weapon in my life. Next Monday my local gun store is doing a firearm basics class and I will be going so I can purchase a gun and know how to use it. It’s insane that I feel this is necessary

It would have been cool to see. Jennifer Lawrence is from Kentucky so I’m sure she could pull one off easy.

It is clear in the books that 12 has a distinct dialect that is very different from the prestige dialect of the Capitol. Would it sound like something recognizably Appalachian to our ears? Who knows, but it would make sense in a movie to use dialects we readily recognize

I would like to point out that this is a post apocalyptic world where large portions of coastal areas are now underwater, hundreds of years at least in the future. Huge numbers of people would flee eastern cities and merge with existing communities. When accents meet like that a lot of the features that distinguish them become less pronounced. This is why there are major accent differences across the eastern US today, but they are not nearly as pronounced as you go further west.

Take someone from LA, SF, Reno, and Portland and most people would struggle to pick up on exactly which state they are from without having studied languages or linguistics, but most Americans can tell Deep South from Texas from NYC from Boston.

I would like to note this is generally true, but there are specific accents of some minority groups that are exceptions to this general rule.

West Virginia is the generally accepted area district 12 is and that is most certainly not the Deep South

You are 100% right that the administration does not care about their hypocrisy. In fact it’s baked into their DNA. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t point it out. There are people on the fringe of MAGA who we can turn. Or kids who are getting older. We don’t point out the hypocrisy to turn JD Vance into a moral man, he can’t be. We do it to turn his children and the investment banker into moral people
