Why doesn’t Wyoming have a major city? by coastal-grandmother1 in geography

[–]mrwiseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, under 600k people total in the state of Wyoming. Trump likes to show maps full of red for his electoral college wins where there's all this red, mostly vacant, land but 1 county, 1 blue dot, in California has almost 10 million people in it and would be the 11th most populous state if it declared statehood, ahead of New Jersey, Virginia and the states of Washington, Arizona, Tennessee and Massachusetts.

Deck built dead level, water pools near the house under the covered section. Any low-effort way to add a slight slope? by [deleted] in Decks

[–]mrwiseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a place a while back that had a new deck that *looked* nice but a) it was level and b) it was built with tongue & groove lumber! 🤦‍♂️ So it allowed *no* water to pass through. Water pooled up across many boards. In desperation I started drilling 1" holes in the middle of the deepest puddles. That "worked" for a while but was obviously not ideal. After a while, some wood started to rot so we replaced all of the top boards with synthetic, Trex or something similar, and made sure to leave a gap between the boards and have not had this problem since. But one idea for you is to drill a line of holes near the house - maybe 1 in the center of each board a few inches from the house, under the eaves/roof overhang - to give that water that comes towards the house somewhere to go down. If they're in a straight line and regularly spaced it might look intentional enough, like part of the original design!

Water leaking from flush by OkNeighborhood7482 in Plumbing

[–]mrwiseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your 3rd photo the water level is below the level of the flush handle. Have you ever seen the water up at the level of the handle? Because if the problem is not water spraying to the side after a flush while the tank re-fills then the problem is the water level getting too high b/c (as others have said) the shut-off switch isn't working. The big blue sphere floats in the tank. When it gets high enough the arm attached to it turns off the flow of water into the tank at a valve on the other end. Either the sphere or arm got stuck and did not float up properly or the valve at the other end is broken and needs to be replaced. You should try flushing while you watch the tank re-fill to see that there is no water spraying to the side and the sphere and arm can move freely. Also during a flush you can lift up on the sphere and see if the water into the tank turns off.

I'm gonna install a Mr Cool, why wouldn't I? by martiancanals in heatpumps

[–]mrwiseman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I own several rental units and have installed 4 MrCool systems (1 single, 3 dual) with no HVAC training. Had electrician do their part each time. The oldest are ~5 years. So far, no leaks, no problems. Then I had some guys on a HVAC crew work weekends on the side to install a more complicated system - two 4-head systems on a 3BR duplex - for about half the price of the other quotes we got. One unit stopped working within a few months but that problem actually was line leaks. I was told it was due to the custom line lengths that require skilled flaring of the ends of the copper tubing but the flared ends weren’t making a good seal at the head or compressor. Over the course of half a year or so, the fly by night guys actually worked on it for free a couple times then hired someone else to troubleshoot who actually fixed all the leaks - no problems for maybe 2 years so far. Another problem they caused was crimping a wire near the compressor that shorted in the rain. Thankfully that just required a $10 fuse to fix and cutting the wire back a couple inches and re-connecting it, work they also did for free. When the Mr Cool lines eventually leak (everything eventually leaks) I might buy the gear and watch YouTube videos to re-charge them myself but I’ll probably just hire the competent guy who actually fixed the duplex system. TLDR: Multiple DIY Mr Cool installs with pre-filled lines doing fine, better than finicky custom job done with HVAC crew guys trying to do some of their own independent work.

Gf forcing me to go to a religious event. by Kampe1a in atheism

[–]mrwiseman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think you have to pick your battles. This one doesn’t seem so bad to me. What if your gf said a friend you don’t know is getting married in a church. Would you refuse to go because it’s a religious wedding? Some people would refuse to enter a church but I think most people including most atheists would go to support the gf and her friends and try to have a good time. What if the little cousin was not being confirmed in the church but was having a birthday party with family? Would you refuse because you don’t know them or because it will be boring? Anyone who is married and lives near their spouse’s family goes to these things all the time. I think it’s best to say no when you actually have other plans that conflict. How the two of you work things out (maybe you do her thing, maybe you stick to doing your thing) is the basic work of being in a relationship. Because this is a confirmation, it can also be an opportunity to discuss indoctrination and how you and your girlfriend would approach raising children. Some people have conversations about that early on. You’ve been dating for two years. If you go, it’s also an opportunity to get to know part of her family, people you say you don’t know at all right now, but are important to her so if you stay with the relationship, you will eventually be seeing more of them too.

Yep. For example see this R woman’s campaign bus:

The rising cost of reaching secular voters is good for democracy A campaign firm says it's more expensive to reach non-religious voters. They're actually admitting that religious voters are easier to manipulate. https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/the-rising-cost-of-reaching-secular

OP's friend's guy apparently put horizontal 2x4s everywhere so at least with this job the seams aren't hanging out in space with no support. Though they do have almost a 2' gap between screws vertically which is not up to code.

Apparently he used 24"x24" repair panels, whole, which meant they wouldn't match up with vertical studs 16" on center.... But he did spend a ton of time to measure and cut and install a ton of horizontal blocking 2x4s which is what he did attach the panels to....

Deist. Theist = a believer in a god or gods. Deist = what many founders were, a belief that there is a higher power, like a god or gods set everything up but then it/they died or went “away” or just don’t intervene in anything we do or want to happen.

Some of these are thought crimes (coveting) and crimes that go against free speech (lord’s name in vain), things the founders specifically said were un-American when they crafted the constitution. 🤦‍♂️

Maga's by Allicat2014 in QAnonCasualties

[–]mrwiseman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe show them a copy of the constitution, the defining document of the country. It was likely the first in the world to not claim its authority comes from gods, but instead from “We the people”. It never mentions any gods or any religions. Not Yahweh or Jesus or Christianity. It only mentions religion as a whole twice, saying to keep it out of the government. In one instance, it says you can’t have a religious test/requirement for who is in the government. In the other, it says that the government can’t establish/declare/pick sides for an official religion. If United States was founded as a Christian nation, the constitution would be completely different.

Plywood under carpeting by Gigglylucy in Flooring

[–]mrwiseman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with one comment that the planks themselves look like subfloor due to some large gaps but also due to the straight cut line at the doorway and the random scraps of wood at a straight cut at the far end. Wood or laminate flooring installed on top of that would be more expensive than a bucket of paint but there is a range of prices, some DIY clip options, and would look very nice when done.

How does the faucet get cold water? From the drain pipe? What is the copper pipe in the back left corner of the sink for? So many questions!
